Comets have been discussed before, but not quite like this.
W-Space does not have any ice, but there could on ocassion be a comet, that not only has to be scanned down, but is actually moving through the system. You and your fleet could extract ice from it, but you would have to keep up with it, and that could be made very hard to do. You would need a fast scan ship with a fast MWD to get ahead of it, and the mining fleet warp to to them, then they would need to match speed to the comet the best they can in order to mine it.
I can imagine people having logistic ships providing power to the miners so they can maintain their micro warp drives just to keep up, and then the challange of unloading to haulers, or an orca could be daunting.
For those miners looking for something to make mining more exciting, this could be it.

Crazy thought here: People can web the comet to make it slow down, but requires a certain "webbing module" that can only be fitted to non-mining ships. The more webbing, however, can cause the comet to break up and the pieces of the comet have to be manually selected and, based on how much stuff is in them etc., are re-webbed. Would make botting extremely difficult, would require team-work and would make the mining less boring.

This could be fun...
Reminds me of a time I probed out an inty that had gone afk burning straight up at about 4km/s. Had to leapfrog a corpmate in a faster inty to catch him - NEVER PVP SOBER. |

Comets - Good idea.
All asteroid belts are the same and boring. Asteroid belts needs to be recustomized and improved too.

I have always liked this idea. adding to mining is a great way to keep it fresh.. Don't remove what we have, add. Finding new minerals that do different things or build different items would be to add to the game without ruining the balance of the game. and comet mining would allow ccp to add a lucurative mining feature that can't be botted.

Could also add them to K-space, where the comet would contain better/different ice than is found normally in the system it's in. For instance, caldari ice in non-caldari space, or Dark glitter/Krystallos/Gelidus in a high sec system. Have the comet move at say 200m/s or maybe even more so those macks would need to be specificly fitted with AB/MWDs etc.

Edited by: shadowace00007 on 08/07/2011 13:06:28 I don't shoot rocks to be honest. But I would love to see Comets and I think its a great idea. I also would like the PVP that would come from trying to protect moving miners on a Comet |

Have you ever tried fitting an MWD to a barge or exhumer?
I like the basic idea (not just for WH), but I don't think ice is the ideal content. The comets should outrun barges, and bring the mining cruisers and frigates back into use. |

Edited by: Mr Cleann on 08/07/2011 16:48:13 I been asking for realistic space events for eons. Ever since I started playing 7 years ago. Anything happen yet? Nope. I doubt it ever will. Some of the things I would like to see are these.
Asteroids impacting planets ion storms in space. either in missions or other areas. Gravitational pulls by the planets that affect how your ship remains in orbit. Planet or moon explosions. Rogue planet flybys / impacts And the mother of all bangs. A super nova in a random system. Those don't have to occur in populated systems. It would be realistic if it did. but I can see the problems that arise when one wakes up. logs in to eve and discovers they have 2 minutes to get all their stuff out of that system. lol Not to mention the refugee problem.
I can say I never thought up a comet. That would be good to see.
I don't see any of the above ever taking place. |

Maybe the tail of the comet can do damage to your ship to prevent people from just doing keep at range. And because the comet is moving you shouldn't be able to bookmark it, if you're off grid you need to rescan for it.
