In the New Eden system there is a strange phenomenon. At the center of this phenomenon lies a huge structure the EVE Gate, a massive jumpgate that is many times bigger than any space structure of ours. Extremely bright and powerful electromagnetic turbulence emits from the EVE gate, strong enough to rip to pieces any vessel foolish enough to wander close to it. Many have tried to get close and all have failed.
Ever since I found out about the EVE gate I have wondered what it could look like but aside from an impressive lightshow in the New Eden system there is nothing else to see there. And while the imagination is more powerful than anything one could come up with I nonetheless have made my vision of what the EVE gate would look like and I hope you'll be able to enjoy it. The EVE gate
I've taken the information from the science articles to make this image. I know these are outdated so I can't be sure of how accurate they still are in relation to story as it is today but still. |

Wow, that's quite cool.
I don't think the Avatar would be able to get that close to it, but it's useful as a size comparison. |

Probably not no, but I'll bet it could closer than most other New Eden ships. I was thinking of putting in an Eidolon like in the last chapter of Empyrean Age but I figured it would be a little too small to see properly then. |

It kind of reminds me of the Omega Relay in ME2
Isn't EVE a natural wormhole, though? What's with the man-made structure? -------- Enemy corps raided into disbandment: Three.

The wormhole that lead the initial explorers and some colonists to New Eden was a natural wormhole. The EVE Gate was built by the corporations supporting colonization because it was determined the natural wormhole would collapse at any time. It did, after the artificial gate was completed. However, a few years later (or maybe it was decades, would have to consult the timeline) the artificial gate collapsed as well.
The resulting radiation storm -- insert pseudoscience **** -- prohibits the phenomena from being closely examined or any ships or probes from travelling within a certain radius.
I really wish the old introduction would have been tweaked and kept, instead of the sandbox introduction silliness there is now. It explained most of this.

No it isn't, when you travel to the New Eden system you will be able to see the disturbance effects in the distance which outshine the New Eden star, but you can't actually reach the gate. Though many have tried to go there at sub-warp speeds and left cans behind to mark how far they've gotten before giving up.

Good question, the old intro did say it was a natural wormhole, but the scientific articles specifically mention there being a huge gate structure that has the letters EVE on it. As I understand it they build a gate on each side of the wormhole to try and stabilize it so it would stay open. We all know how that worked out though... ------ In my memories is still see the waves. The light and the energy pulsing, forming shapes so complex and beautiful. It is a tale none will ever believe. |

Quote from Evelopedia
Quote: Extremely bright and powerful electromagnetic turbulence emits from the EVE gate, as it is commonly called. This turbulence seems to originate from within the gate, so it is believed that the gate is actually open and the electromagnetic storms are coming through from wherever the gate is linked to
This has been bugging me for awhile... Did the natural wormhole collapse and afterwards someone build the gate and reopened it or what? Or was the wormhole "natural" in the first place?

The original wormhole to New Eden was natural in origin. However, the earthlings of that time knew the wormhole would not last forever and built massive stargates to both sides of the wormhole, so that after the natural wormhole collapsed, they could still access the New Eden galaxy, in time, the wormhole closed as expected, the stargates worked as they were meant to for some decades. However, something cataclysmic happened to the gates, and the gate on our side is now a violent maw of destruction - a particular theory on the gate is that it is infact still open, and the "galactic storm" emanating from it is in fact originating from wherever the gate is linked to, which necessarily isn't it's original counterpart. None of the colonies were self-sufficient and most were not hospitable to human life when this happened, with the notable exception of the Minmatar homeworld, Pator IV, which was a true paradise world of it's time.
The rest is, as they say, history.

As for the OP, that is indeed a marvellous rendition of the gate. I could imagine them looking something like that, and as noted, they were said to be massive and to have taken 200 years to build.

Where did you find the 200 year build time? I hadn't seen that. From my understanding the wormhole was only open for 70 years after colonization started.
Granted it was never stated, that I saw, how long it was open before colonization. Just trying to get a grasp of the timeframe..

Granted there is a lot of conflicting information about the gate - as well as many other older things in EVE Storyline - but it is the official wiki...

A theory of mine is that the natural wormhole had a cycle. It's there for a while, vanishes and later it reappears. Which in itself is not bad or special. But if we build these massive gates that force open their own connection and suddenly this massive natural wormhole erupts back into being in the exact same location. Huge surge of energy, gates go haywire and become these torrents of death forever scarring that part of space and making them vast unstable rifts.
And thanks for the kind words on my work ------ In my memories is still see the waves. The light and the energy pulsing, forming shapes so complex and beautiful. It is a tale none will ever believe. |

So, the wormholes are a function of a broken EVE Gate? That explains much.

That's an awesome image :D
I would have personally expected the Eve Gate to be way bigger, hundreds of times larger than that and like a huge acceleration gate, but I love that concept.

hmmm.. possibly.. but, that said, the last page of TEA hints that it is possible to pass through the eve gate still. At least it hints that the jovians managed it. and that the result was... somewhat bad. :P
'natural wormhole?'
iirc, the gate was a natural wormhole, but, as stated by others, in an effort to stabilise, and expedite travel through it, massive stargate like structures were built at either side.
if i read correctly the smaller stargates we are all familliar with use a simillar theory, utilising the potential for small scale WH that certain environmental conditions create. though that is an obscure reference, and i can't remember where i read it.
