Hey everyone,
I did a quick Google on the subject but all I could find were peoples opinions, not facts. Can anyone enlighten me on what the various forms of personal weapons you could find in New Eden, from all races? In particular I'm wanting to know about traditional sidearms such as handguns, automatic weapons and some heavier stuff like the EVE version of the GPMG, as well as pyrotechnics like grenades and the like.
While I'm on the subject, do the various military and security forces still bother with body armour? I'm pretty sure a high intensity beam laser will burn right through most types of body armour but it'd be nice to know.
Thanks in advance for any help,

This information is quite scattered. Some of it is explored in the novels, only a little bit in the chronicles and in-game. Player fiction explores it quite a bit.
In terms of specific weapons, most of that information will be released necessarily with DUST 514 this winter. But we do know the following:
- There is a huge price/quality range for small arms.
- High-tech small arms cannot be fired by anyone but their owner; they perform biometric scans when held. In addition, high security stations have security measures to shut down said high-tech arms and detect the presence of low-tech ones.
- There are projectile, magnetically fired (rail, blaster), and laser small arms, as well as your assortment of rockets, grenades, etc.
- Every faction has their specialty on the ground, just like in space. Anyone can build a laser weapon, but the Amarr do it the best, for instance.
- Multispectral grenades are special grenades that have multiple functions that can be set by the user. They can operate as an HE or frag grenade, a flashbang, EMP, or apparently a special setting that can overload the enemy's central nervous system.
- Body armor does exist and will halt low-powered projectiles.

Edited by: Cable Udan on 10/07/2011 00:58:07 Many thanks for the prompt summary there, Kyoko. It's helped a great deal with the short story I'm writing.
If anyone else has any more information I'll gladly absorb it :)

I recommend watching the DUST trailer, and the "Future of EVE" trailer. They show a lot of weapons, armor and vehicles that are used. I've seen a missile launcher and there is even a sort of deployable "turret" that I've seen so far. |

In one of the amarr cosmos missions, it asks you to transport some man portable anti-tank lasers. I guess those would fall under heavy infantry weapons.
Also in the amarr cosmos area are some elite laser pistols. |

Well, as far as I know there's not much solid information, "Prime Canon", about small arms in EVE universe until DUST arrives, therefore you'll have to rely on opinions & educated guesses most of the time. But I managed to dig up a rather extensive discussion I remembered taking part in (obviously not knowing anything) about small arms. Hope it helps to give you some information & inspiration. |

You might want to read some of the chronicles. There are a few ones handling about merc's on stations and so on.
One Chronicle would be Black Mountain. Take a look at this one in particular: http://www.eveonline.com/background/potw/default.asp?cid=22-10-07
Here a quote:
This ammo you have," she said to Yorlas, "Change-state, by any chance?"
He nodded.
"Activation on high-speed contact?"
Yorlas nodded again. "With skin," he said, and handed her a clip from his belt.
She inspected it, then gripped both ends tight and pushed in. She felt the internal safety dislodge, and one end of the clip became loose. She reached for one of the dead man's hands and pulled it close, removed the clip top and poured a handful of ammo into his cooling palm. They were little spherical pellets, and as soon as they touched his skin, several tiny, angled blades shot out from their surface, the blades curved in on the centre like the slanted path of a meteor falling to earth.
"And when they go into someone's skin?" she asked Yorlas.
"They spin," he said. "Work through his veins. Make a mess."
"So you could hit anyone anywhere on their body with this, and..."
"And the orbs will go in, make their way through the bloodstream and pulp everything they touch," Polok said, walking up to them. "Just one gets into you and you're in trouble. Close to an artery and you're dead, but even if it's just in your toes, they'll still cause pain so agonizing it'll drop you on the spot."
He picked up one of the silver pellets lying on top of the victim's palm, and looked at its blades. "These are regular issue. They got heat-seeking ones as well. Bronze-colored, I think. Nasty little things."

If you're after canon facts about the equipment and weapons used by security forces throughout New Eden trawl the Item Database.
While some of the items don't give much detail, for example Small Arms, other entries provide more for you to work with, like Arctic Warfare Marines with "specialty rifles, thermal grenades", etc.
You also mentioned body armour, and while some of the unit descriptions might give some details here and there, there is also the Crate of Prototype Body Armor Fabric which might help.

You'll be getting more info on the small arms aspect of EVE during the rollout of DUST 514. However, keep in mind that New Eden is a pretty big place, and planetary engagements have been going on for thousands of years, so it's a rather diverse and wide open subject, to be honest. Guns, like people, are eclectic and bountiful, though one group is more violent than the other. (I'll let you decide.)

Thanks for all the responses guys. From what I've been able to gather until Dust is released the vast majority of infantry weapons are only really limited to the authors imagination, within reason of course.
The subject of firearms and how they work is my fortT and also a huge part of my job so I'm sure I'll be able to come up with a variety of weapons that fit well into world of New Eden whilst still staying somewhat "realistic" (if that's the right term) as far as believability goes.
Thanks once again everyone,

I bet there are certainly different guns for use on stations and ships. on the ground I could break out the bigass Dirty Harry 44 Magnum Pwncannon. on the station or on a ship you would not want security forces to be packing that kind of heat because it could go right through a wall or window. id guess they use either the special bullets like in that chronicle or use something that breaks up inside the body and shatters when it hits something solid rather than going on through.
of course id not be shocked if EVE still has some old classics, like Shotguns id imagine that tech was not lost considering its something so simple yet so effective when talking projectile weapons at least.
Part of me pictures the Minmatar using weapons that could be called the EVE version of the AK-47, reliable and cheap while the Caldari would use complex expensive railgun based assault weapons and the Amarr of course packing lasers.

In the Apocrypha I remember the characters using handheld projectiles and blasters. I assume there are personal lasers and railguns too. Oh, and the combat MTACs (mechs)

my guess is Caldari use coilguns at the AR size range but then likely do have a full fledged railgun that serves the job as the Barret .50cal does in reality(Long range anti-material sniper rifle).
the Mechs/combat walkers are actually most likely similar to our ships and can be fitted with a variety of weapons and tools. Though what are EVE walkers like? are they the big hulks like Mechwarrior or more along the scale of the ones from the movie Avatar?

http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/MTAC
Military MTACs can carry multitudes of weaponry like antiair and surface-to-surface missiles, railguns and plasma cannons (for the caldari models featured in the revelations novel). They have integrated shield generators and tough armor plating. In a manner of speaking, they are "walking tanks". They are not very big usually, just 4 to 5 metres in height and ideally suited to urban warfare, where they can exploit cover easily and use the enhanced mobility afforded by having legs. Real groundhugging tanks have more mass, are tougher and pack more firepower but lack mobility.
