Edited by: Commandante Caldari on 14/07/2011 11:24:05 Would like to correct my name to Comandante.
But: NO. It just will cause a mess to the community and intel - especially for players playing EVE for years.
In RL you are allowed - here in GER - to use an artist pseudonym. But you are not allowed to change your whole name in general. Your ID card will still show the original name and the pseudonym can be put on the backside of the ID card. Documents related to civil law can be signed with the pseudonym but in criminal law just your common name is legal.

Because of the way their database works it makes it impossible/extremely difficult to change names.
Also, this has the whole issue of being able to hide after corp theft or scams or whatever, not something alot of people want you to be able to do.
People can legally & even illegally change their names in real life. There is no RP or gaming reason as to why it shouldn't be an option.
As for technical reasons, regarding data bases and so on, I find that hard to believe because CCP already changes people names that are found to be offensive.
Illegally is no option CCP can deliver. That would mean logically: you need to hack the server to change your name. Legal name changes in RL are limited to artist's pseudonyms or to "protect" celebreties. But here in Germany you can't get rid of your common name by law. I think this will not be different in other countries. You just can add a pseudonym on the backside of the ID Card. That would mean for EVE: your main name is still present and another name is added to the history and not vice versa. What makes no sense for the idea.
Anyway: NO!

I doubt they'd be using player names as the primary key in a relational database. More likely it works something like this:
PLAYER TABLE PlayerId = 353465446 PlayerName = "Oyuki Sada"
The PlayerId would be used as a reference in other tables, so you could change the PlayerName without messing stuff up (apart from the game's sandbox of course)
I'm not sure that'd work if there's more than one character on each account. It'd have to use both id and name. I Have My Moments |

CCP wouldn't try it on TQ yet based on the statements around the Space Shopping Network.
So it looks like it will be our Chinese friends who will get to test all of these new MTs for us.
The fact that it's being done so soon after the outrage over the last few weeks shows how short of cash CCP must be with the long development of DUST 514 and WoD and the risk to the balance sheet.
People who believed and defended CCP on the basis that they weren't considering game changing MTs - well you are looking at one that was obviously being planned for a while and is now being implemented.
Forget golden ammo, you will be able to change your entire identity. Tell me that ain't a game changer.
How? All CCP has to do is add a name history. Simple. We have employment history. How ahrd would it be to add a name history.
I would think people here on TQ would love this ideal. They buy a character off the bazaar and do not like its name - this is a good way to allow them to change it.
I like this ideal and hope that CCP offers it to us on TQ.

It's a terrible idea. Other than a few rare occasions, the main reason I expect people who are in favour of it is to avoid responsibility for their past actions.

You ever been on facebook or whatever? Takes a stalker like 5 minutes to find out. Nerd level in Eve is way over 9000 so you can expect that **** to go down in seconds. Name change having any effect on that kinda thing is a delusional idea. Especially in a game like Eve where corp & alliance affiliation, standings, location etc make it very easy to identify someone.

That is a plain lie, btw. No database schema makes changing a name even remotely hard, unless they've been that stupid during development.

Whats the difference between using alts for scams or changing name?. I dont know but this is not such a bad idea. If you can change name for example for 35k AUR/ 10plex /3,5B isk, i think its better use of MT than buying non vanity ships.
Depends on what level of scam we're talking about here, but if it's a sizeable corp theft, that alt represents a fair chunk of invested time and money to get him to where he can actually perform the theft, so throw-away alts won't do you much good. You have to sacrifice something a bit more expensive than that (most notably time, which can't be bought) to get it done.
And for a well-orchestrated snatch, 3.5B ISK should be well within the gross profit and still leave a chunk of change to have fun with, so the price would have to be quite silly if you want to go that route.
Personally, I don't like the idea on a more philosphical level: it's part of your character and the history it has helped create. Wiping that out is just a wrong. ùùù ôWe want to try this thing called micro-transactions, but we don't know what it is. Can anyone explainà aw screw it, let's just do it! What could go wrong?ö ù ÇÇP |

I have a couple of toons that I would like to change the names on. Not because of anything I've done, it's just that I didn't realize how stupid the names were until I played this game for sometime. I didn't want to loose the training time buy starting over again.
I'm not a corp thief or anything like that, so I have nothing to worry about.
