I'm thinking about getting into solo exploration. I am thinking about a Hurricane or a Myrmidon. Any tips or do's and don'ts?

Do it. Don't get blown up.
Don't know about the Hurricane but I found the Myrmidon pretty good for it before I could step up to an Ishtar.

Really depends on what kind of exploration....
Wormholes? What class? Will you be nomadic? etc.

All kinds of exploration. Define nomadic? I probably won't move out of Empire space. I do not dare nullsec yet.

I think you mean to say that you don't dare low sec and null sec...
Well, that makes it a much easier question to answer then! Any ship that can fit an expanded probe launcher and have decent tank and gank.
What sort of ships do you enjoy flying the most?
You see, a dominix is a classic 'swiss army knife' ship, but if you prefer a different style...
You could play around with EveFit.

It also depends on where you plan to explore.
In high sec you will find a number of the sites will be restricted. For that reason in high sec I just explore in my old scanning frig (Imicus). It can handle pretty much any site I run into and won't get stopped. I had tried at first with my Myrmidon but ran into issues where the sites were cruiser or below.
now many High sec sites simply aren't worth running in the first place. but I have pulled 80mil mods out of them before.

Edited by: Akuma Tsukai on 15/07/2011 14:32:23 Highsec - try assault frig or usual cruisers, many sites are restricted to those. Lowsec - BC is good, HAC or T3 is fine, with BS ull get a restriction from time to time but its rare. 0 sec - u sure u wanna solo?:) HAC or T3 is heavily recommended, BS usually isnt fast enough to gtfo Oh and stay away from C2 and higher if ure in BC or lower, ull get eaten alive. The basic doitall lowsec cheap peace of crap i use in amarr FW space (no WHs): [Dominix, Explorer] Large Armor Repairer II Armor EM Hardener II Armor EM Hardener II Armor Thermic Hardener II Armor Thermic Hardener II Capacitor Power Relay II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
100MN Afterburner II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Analyzer I Codebreaker I
350mm Railgun II, Plutonium Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Plutonium Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Plutonium Charge L 350mm Railgun II, Plutonium Charge L Core Probe Launcher I, Core Scanner Probe I Salvager I
Large Capacitor Control Circuit I Large Capacitor Control Circuit I Large Capacitor Control Circuit I
Ogre II x5 Curator II x5 Berserker II x5
Oh and pls, do fit ab on everything, or prepare to reach an enlightenment :) ---- Drones eat everything. Trust me. |

Just to avoid any confusion; you only need a core probe launcher to find plexes. These are a lot easier to fit then the expanded probe launcher mentioned above. The expanded launcher also allows for you to launch combat probes for scanning out other ships, which you don't need.

Null Sec:
Some Battlecruisers, Strategic Cruisers, Battleships, Command Ships, or Small Gangs. ------------------ I actually live in non-npc nullsec and have only come across 2 exploration sites I couldn't run in a drake. One because of tank (something with an active tank could do it), one because the drake doesn't have the raw HP to soak a 150k EMP torpedo.
It really boils down to how much time do you want to spend on the site.
The only real problem with trying it in nullsec is if you are hostile to the residents, you WILL get probed down and killed. Nothing you could fit suitable for exploration sites in nullsec will save you from an angry player. (indeed, a dramiel will kill just about anything it can point, albeit slowly and it'll usually call in reinforcements.)

If you want to do lowsec exploration, I would use this fit.
[Ishtar, Solo Exploration] Capacitor Power Relay II Armor Explosive Hardener II Armor EM Hardener II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Medium Armor Repairer II
Y-T8 Overcharged Hydrocarbon I Microwarpdrive 10MN Afterburner II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II
Sisters Core Probe Launcher, Sisters Core Scanner Probe I Improved Cloaking Device II 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S 200mm AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet EMP S
Medium Auxiliary Nano Pump I Medium Anti-Explosive Pump I
Ogre II x5 Hammerhead II x5 Warrior II x5 Vespa EC-600 x5 Garde II x5
Or something to this effect. You tank the sites by flying around with your AB, and sig/speed tank them with the armor repper to repair. You can get through almost all lowsec gate camps by using the cloak + MWD trick, and you do a lot of dps with sentries/ogres, and have small guns to shoot any frigates that get around you.

I've had some success with an exploration arbitrator in Lowsec.
[Arbitrator, Cortez] Damage Control II Medium Armor Repairer II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II
Analyzer I Codebreaker I 10MN Afterburner II Cap Recharger II
Prototype Cloaking Device I Salvager I Core Probe Launcher I, Sisters Core Scanner Probe I Drone Link Augmentor I
Medium Capacitor Control Circuit I Medium Capacitor Control Circuit I Medium Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I
Specific modules, drones and rigs to taste of course. But I posted this to give a general idea.
It's more effective than you might think. I rarely ran into a site I couldn't handle in it. Can even go up against the NPC BS's you can find while doing exploration in Lowsec, though it might take a while to whittle them down with medium drones.
Keep an eye on local and the d-scan. You see combat probes out, warp to a safe you made previously and cloak. Most of the time you can just wait it out.
In the case you lose the ship, it only costs about 25 million total to replace everything.
