I downloaded the the trial about year ago, played a little got a feel for how the training system worked, how to outfit a ship, but not much else.
I am a long time MMO player (been playing at least one MMO since UO, and played MUDs before that). I have gotten sick of Elves, Orcs, swords, and their ilk. I am just as tired of the theme park rides that seem to be the all the rage in MMO development.
I tend to play a soloish life but like taking part in player events if I stumble on them. But I am considering going down the road ov becoming a solitary hacker/salvager/explorer scanning space. But really I do not know what I want to do; also I am not sure what the "normal" roles are for in the community.
I have a many questions, just not sure which ones are the more important;
Is there a limit to how much I can train/learn? I see the clones prices are based training points, is this the biggest limfac on trying to "learn it all"?
To what degree is joining a corp "mandatory", what are the drawbacks of being more or less a "lone wolf"?
For now I am just doing the starter area contacts trying the different aspects of the game.
Any advice ya'll can give me would be great.

Want to play alone mostly? Get one or two extra accounts. That will save you tons of training time as you can specialize in many things simultaneously. It will also allow you to explore and pvp more efficiently.

Game content is player driven. Therefore best gameplay is in a corp.

This. A corp gives you more things to work towards. Alone you become a slave to your skill points and your ISK. In a corp, you can work with others toward the common good, share stuff to complement each other's weak spots, etc. Plus, it means a group of cool people that you regularly hang out with, and maybe blow stuff up together with.
It's even better if you're in an alliance, especially a nullsec one. I moved to nullsec right as my trial ended. It wasn't easy, but there are no regrets.

I know a few successful solo(multiple account) exploration players that are quite happy with EvE. By being in an NPC corp you are subject to 10% taxation on bounties and mission payments over 100k but are immune to war and corp mates in npc corps cannot kill you. If you join a player run corp you are subject to a tax decided by them, members of the corp may kill you and the corp may be at war with other corps meaning you can be killed by war targets anywhere. To be good at EvE by yourself you'll need about 6 months of training on your characters skills, it's less for veterans but as you are new, good luck with being 100% efficient training the best skills. If you want to be by yourself you will want more than 1 account because at times you will find carrying all of your exploration gear severely handicaps your ship's combat capability. You'll also want to explore in an area of space that the local pirate factions will be weak to your damage type and do the damage you tank best.
My exploration route is always...start my own corp...build one scanning, hacking, codebreaking, analyzing, salvaging character then one pure combat character(usually caldari because I like the passive shield tanking in wormholes where you will be neuted)...work highsec and some quiet lowsec areas at the start and as skills increase move to nullsec and wormholes for more isk. Then after that I get bored and go pvp because EvE is designed around pvp.

Salvage (don't mine). Trade (manipulate market items) Loot war camps at docks (then dock quick) Piracy Roam lowsec in a cov ops as soon as you can, cov ops open up much more Eve for you. Get on a Level 4 mission fleet and salvage/kill (quick way to gain standings and sec status and ISK with help)

Some corporations are formed for specific purposes (e.g. faction warfare corps, industry corps, pvp corps, etc), while others are just the general "guild" you find in other MMOs - an assortment of differnet people with different playstyles. It really depends. They should specify it in their recruitment ads, and my advice is you get to talk to a recuiter/director/CEO before joining the corp, just to make sure it's what you want. That's how you assure "reputability", too.
Re: your second question, I actually wrote in detail about that a while ago, so have a link. I don't feel like repeating myself. </shamelessplug>.

Ok so members of my own corp can off me? That seems like an easy way to gank people...
I take it Covert Ops has stealth capabilities? I say it in the training skills on the market. How effective is say stealthing into a corp battle and salvaging the wrecks and steathing back out... I would assume it is frowned on if it is possible. How easy is a stealthed player detected?

Yes, members of your own corp can shoot you, but it ruins member retention, so they generally don't :P. It makes testing out fits very easy, though, as you don't have to worry about rules of engagement (in hisec or lowsec).
Any ship can fit a cloak and go invisible. Cloaks make you unscannable and completely undetectable, unless any object comes within 2000 m of you... in which case the cloak turns off. Cloaks can also not be turned on while you're being targeted (even if nothing is actually shooting you). However, the cloaks ruin your ability to target quickly, and you can neither move fast, activate modules, nor warp while cloaked.
The bonus of covops ships is the fact they get special cloaks which do not slow them down, do not ruin their targeting, and allow them to warp while cloaked. This is what opens up so many opportunities. However, covert ops ships in general tend to be quite fragile, and relatively expensive to other ships of their size. For looting/salvaging, I would recommend using really cheap and fast ships: in your case, the Maulus, perhaps (since you're Gallente). I personally prefer the Vigil for this sort of work.

Yeah, don't go the multiple account route. Lone accounts FTW.
No seriously, a second account is almost a requirement because of lack of content in this game.

Covert Ops cloak ships can warp while cloaked and any cloaked ship is immune to probes. Regular cloaks have some significant drawbacks(locking time/movement speed while cloaked) and can be put on anything covert ops cloaks are for specialized ships. To decloak a ship an object(ship/asteroid/drone) has to get within 2km of it. Ninja salvaging is fairly easy but it depends on the space and your abilities. People in nullsec can cloak ships next to wrecks and when you grab it they drop cloak and bubble using an interdictor so you can't warp until you move out of the bubble, people in lowsec and highsec have a slightly harder time because of the de-cloaking targeting delay and lack of bubbles. Salvaging will not let people shoot you in highsec(as in using the salvaging module) if you take items from the wreck then the owner's corporation gets the right to blow up your ship.

Don't listen to the guy that says don't listen. Multiple accounts make a lot of things easier, but isn't at all mandatory.
As far as covert ops go, they use a cloaking device that fits in a high slot. While you're cloaked, the only way to be detected is if something (anything) gets within 2km of you.

Oh, I forgot to mention, if you want to be a real ass and want to use fast ships and salvaging/looting as a way to do things, look into ninja salvaging. tl;dr: you go into people's high-level missions and steal the loot from their wrecks, and salvage their wrecks.
You can extract delicious tears, and if you're using a cheap ship, you will always run a profit. It's not really reliable as a long-term way to make money (the wrecks and loot aren't worth that much), but some mission runners think otherwise, and they get really mad. I need to get back into this once I repair my sec status.

I am fond of the Punisher (I am Ammar I think) seems cheep enough to replace, not too worried about loosing my ship just yet. More worried about loosing my pilot But I guess that is what the clones are for.
Thanks for the link on nullsec, it clears some of it up for me.

There is a plethora of 1 man corps out there. make your own corp and set tax to 0%. if you get war dec'ed then go back to a NPC corp will the war dec ends (npc corps cannot be war dec'ed). And tbh I actually have gotten many of my corp members by always seeing them in local chat where I tend to hang around and invite them to chat in my corps public channel. I would put money on it that if you hand around an area long enough(especially low sec) in a 1 man corp you will be contacted and either told to GTFO system or be asked to join someones corp.

Ohh, you're Amarr. The Punisher is a decent combat ship, but for salvage/looting the Inquisitor is the best IMO. Large cargo, and more agile than the Punisher.
Also, don't worry about losing your clone too much. Just remember to upgrade it whenever you get podded so you never lose skill points. Especially as a beginner, the clones are dirt cheap, so it's all good.

Yep I knew that... I am not set on going completely solo, just that I have soloish tendencies. Heck from some of the posts I read I think I could have fun playing scout for an invasion force just as much exploring for the sake of exploring.
I was reading another post about Wormhole Space? How does that relate to security levels?
