So I've been running Eve through Steam for god knows how long and I've just gone to log in and it's downloading an update that will take 3 hours to download
WTF? I know there has been no update since I last played last night?! And yes I have tried restarting Steam and my computer!
Cheers.

Don't play via Steam?
Also, Steam has been having serious network issues for a couple days now. Sometimes I can't log in and other times, when i can, I cannot start any games. (All unavailable or some ****.)
I have never used Eve with Steam though. If I were you, I'd just download the standalone client and use that. (imo) -----------------------------------

Steam is bad, m'kay?
I purchased my first account with it, and after about a month of exactly what you describe, I said enough, and reinstalled the game client entirely. This was three and a half years ago...

Did you verify the cache through STEAM? Also, do you have the "automatically update this game" option enabled? Either could cause this issue. I became annoyed enough with the STEAM version that I simply removed it from disk and downloaded the client from CCP. You can use the same product key and play on without all the STEAM issues.
It's a great service for single player games but a real pain for MMOs.

steam is getting a bad file read (bad checksum or something) and is attempting to download the entire client.
scan your local files, however since its already downloading you may have to go all the way this time.

Well, when you're busy d/l some new mystery patch every week from Steam, we'll all be playing the game instead, now we won't we? I call that pretty insightful, given that it would be absolutely true, if I were not at work.

Been using Steam for EVE for years. Don't know about any mystery patch every week, month, or year.
All it probably is is the deployment of the Incarna files, as the checksum won't match what they have with user updated Incarna(as EVE updates itself outside of Steam). They changed the Steam name from Incursion to Incarna within the last few days.

Yea I have no idea either, just going off the OP saying it must be some huge hassle.
I went through a couple lumps with Steam years ago and decided it wasn't worth the bother for the minimal services it provided.

You don't have to use Steam.
Just because you bought EVE through Steam, doesn't mean you have to run it through Steam.
Simply launch the client as-is, from the game folder. Saving that, you could uninstall EVE from Steam, if you are compulsive as such, and download the full-client from the EVE site and install it to the default folder. All that matters is that you are subscribed and can log-in.

1. Uninstall EVE from Steam. 2. Download EVE client and install. 3. Open Steam, click "add non-Steam game". Pick EVE. You now have EVE with a fully functioning Steam overlay.

No need to uninstall eve from steam. Just move the whole EVE folder to another location and launch it from there.

Steam cannot modify files, it has to redownload them I guess. But they're fixing that soon...

Just to confirm, it redownloaded the files and ran fine. Probably has to do with Steam changing the game files over from Incursion to Incarna

STEAM has nothing to do with EVE.
Even if you buy and install it through STEAM, it's just the regular EVE client in a different location. Open up your steam file, make a shortcut to the EVE executable and paste it on your desktop. Do Start->Run->MSConfig and set steam to not run on start up since you don't even have to have STEAM running to play it.
When STEAM first came out the games required it to be running and some titles still do, but now that it's used as a middle man for distribution no one is going to sit there and write/debugg the code for all these games on so many engines. All the effort they put in is a quick change of default file directory and a shortcut path to the executable for the games Library.
For the vast majority of titles in the STEAM store there is no actual interaction beyond being a very good download manager. The games library list is simply a fancy list of shortcuts they make you think you need so they can put ads in front of you.
