I have searched high and low for the last year trying to learn about carriers and whenever the subject comes up, the answer is always: If you are asking, you aren't ready. Sometimes, I hear: Ask your alliance mates. They are there to train you.
So after much research and then experience flying caps, I created a series of youtube videos to help you learn about carriers using the Thanatos as my example. After all, it is sad to see so many poorly fitted, skilled, and flown carriers get ganked and blown up because of massive ignorance. Keep this thread on top for others to read, if you like it, with your feedback on the videos.
Lastly, I anticipate that some of you will disagree with me on some points, such as the triage module. That is the beauty of being a cap pilot. You are arriving to the plane of existence where your own style and strategy prevails over formulas and accepted "cookie-cutter" fits, though there are many really bad ways to error in fitting a carrier for sure. I encourage you to think creatively and then test your ideas on the test server, where you lose only time and gain the joy of trying out your ideas and not having that now really embarrassing fit on your km.
Watch it at this link: Eve Online Thanatos fit and jump tutorial All the parts together are about an hour total in four 15 min parts. Funny that no one considers themselves evil, even while caught in the thick of it. |

Is it actually worth watching? Major CBA set in several minutes in after seeing that you recommend fitting drone control units with a triage module and describing how the triage module "gives you a powerful solo pvp ability".
Unless it improves later on I would recommend that any prospective carrier pilots ignore this as either a troll or made by an idiot.

Edited by: ShadowFire15 on 20/07/2011 03:54:47 ok. im a carrier pilot. have been for quite a long time now so Im pretty sure I know at least a little about this stuff.
3 drone control units on a thanatos? the ship gives bonus to fighter damage but its not worth it (at least in my honest opinion)to waste 3 high slots on a regular carrier when those can be used for logi mods.
Also, triage mod and the drone control units both fitted?

Assuming this isn't a troll - I find it hard to believe - here is a link for a simple carrier guide which features some comments from highly experienced pilots: Carrier FAQ

How is a triage module a good solo pvp thing for carriers when you lose your drones doing it?
Not that i have ANY experience flying caps.

Very worth watching.

I did not say that, if you listened. I said "you can't do much of anything, but I see a value for triage." and "The triage gives the carrier a very unique ability as a solo ship with it." Just to clarify my position on carrier pvp, I would NEVER recommend using the carrier for solo pvp. "That said I would almost use that Triage never." So whatever Lady Skank's problem is, I am quite certain that she is taking issue with things that were not said. Don't let one person's angst about one module control how you approach the carrier.
PS: The use of DCU for additional drones has its place depending on your strategy and needs. Don't let anyone bully you about how you fit your carrier. It is not uncommon for use on plexing carrier fits. Just learn and form your own opinion.
The carrier cyno gen is a great idea if you have a fleet of carriers ready and within jump range to assist you. In that case, RR modules are more appropriate to support them when they join you. These are all various strategies, and good ones, but I have not yet created a video going over the strategies and fitting for every kind of imaginable scenario. See the Rooks and Kings Pantheon video for a few powerful fleet approaches to RR and triage. Someone link that excellent video for the crowd please. Funny that no one considers themselves evil, even while caught in the thick of it. |

So here is a productive post with a solid perspective.

The DCU is for added dps for solo plexing. Do it smart and there is little risk. RR mods are only good if you expect to need to support a fleet with RR, and are therefore not useful for solo work such as moving stuff solo or plexing solo, etc.
This video was not intended to teach how to work in fleets. I expect that the pilot should understand how to fly the ship by his or her self before learning to integrate all those skills into fleet work. Kind of like learning to drive in an empty parking lot before joining rush hour traffic on the freeways.

true, but I might want more T1 drones. I would be a sitting duck if smartbombing left me with no drones. Funny that no one considers themselves evil, even while caught in the thick of it. |
