Drones could use a bit more... Well a bit more of something. I propose CCP add towing drones. Instead of fitting a tractor beam(s), drop a flight of these into your drone bay. Send them out and they can latch onto wrecks or cans and drag them back to you. Or just move stuff around.
Not 100% useful (yet), but still kind of cool. And who knows maybe in the future there will be an additional industrialist activity that they can be put to work on. Not to get into too much detail, but they should probably be yellow. |

Yes.
To make them not be OP tho they would need to be either shorter range than a Tractor beam or not fly as fast as the TB can pull. Yargh. I be SGT Funyoun. King of the Pirates!!! |

Was originally considered by CCP but they decided Tractor beams were better for balance reasons. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Was thinking they would be slower then base tractor beam speed and possibly...
The size of the wreck and # of drones pushing/pulling would determine the speed or, 1 drone for small sized wreck, 2+ drones to move a medium wreck, and 3+ to move battleship or larger wrecks, etc. Perhaps a new industrial skill could affect the towing speed and ability of drones as well.
Don't want to add more to the server load, but just a few ideas to flesh it out a bit more. Also, now that theres an extremely efficient salvager in the Noctis, I wonder if CCP wouldn't be open to revisiting this?

I believe was more a case of ship balance. Do you trade some of your damage to fit a tractor or use the drone bay for tractor drones?
On a caldari ship for example were drones are not normally used in combat, their is little trade off in having a bay full of tractor drones. However a Domi would have a large impact as you trade spare damage dealing drones for tractor ones.
With tractors being hi slots everyone has to trade a useful mod for being able to pull in cans and wrecks. After all how any people leave a spare hi slot on their combat ships ? @ poster above, then use the drone bay for caldari and a tractor beam on your domi.
I like the idea of tractor drones, maybe even salvage drones. Drones have been more or less ignored with the exception of Fighter Bombers and we all know how that turned out .
TL;DR MOAR DRONES! (yes im gallente)

But isn't it just an issue of time and convenience? Not sure how it really effects balance tbh. After all don't most players use a second ship for grabbing wrecks and salvaging? In which case they're still not giving up a damage dealing high slot. I think as long as the drones aren't more efficient than tractor beams it just adds another option without creating any real imbalances. What's more there's even an element of risk, in that you might have to warp off before your drones return, or your drones can be destroyed. If anything it makes pulling in wrecks and cans a bit more interesting (as much as that is possible). |
