This skill is consistently recommended in many of the responses to advice on this forum. I've read the description and even the Eve Wiki article on it and have a sense for the mechanics of how it works.
What I can't figure out is whether this is something worthwhile only in PVP of if it has any merit in PVE as well, and in PVP is it something that would be used regularly or as more of an oh **** button?

It is useful in both pve and pvp situations though more useful in pvp. In pvp you'll use it for just about every fight weither it be to push your point out further, getting an extra mwd boost of speed or trying to knock someone out before they get to the gates. Pve you'll usually use it in those situations where get scambled/webbed and your tank is minimal.

I've overheated in a mission when I dozed-off and found myself nearly dead, warp-jammed, and stuck on a structure.
It is such a cheap oh **** button skill to train for PvE, but ya, it is used a lot more in PvP.

At least IV, you really should have V.
For small-gang warfare, you overheat pretty much every battle. For blobs, not so much. Usually only when primaried, burning out of a bubble, or shooting a supercap.
--------------------------------- Pillage, then burn. Everything is air-droppable at least once. There is no 'overkill.' There is only 'open fire' and 'time to reload.

Thanks for sharing your perspectives. Not something I *need* at the moment, but definitely something to get on my next int/mem remap. I assume that if you do use overheating the nanite repair skills are basically a necessity too?

Simply not true. The gains you get are pretty minimal from training this to lvl5. Is it a good one to max out ? sure eventually, but it isn't needed. Anyone that tells you otherwise is full of it. Apart from the lvl 5 skills that allow you to access new modules/ships most skills are fine at lvl4. I have something like 140 lvl5 skills, most of them being in pvp. Personally I prefer to play my 15 mil sp alt that has only a dozen or so lvl5 skills.
