Ganks are a fact of life in EVE.
EVE is like Philadelphia or Camden, NJ.. Everybody has a gun, Everybody does want to mug you so you have to watch your back and carry a bigger gun.... or make sure to have thugs with guns on your side(drones).
just train and play smart..
For example if I wanted to haul 4000m3 of Morphite into Jita. I would use my Crane because nobody would know I was there before I was already docked. yes I am paranoid enough to cloak in empire space.. even in a 1.0 system id cloak if my cargo had enough value.

Except the pirates have all the incoming vectors to gates anchored with secure containers - you're not getting there all the way cloaked. You Fly Safe now, you hear?
@OP - pretty sure one of the key EVE rules is never fly what you can't afford to loose... Might have just been a rumor though...

Edited by: Adonis Peverell on 23/07/2011 05:36:55 Aye, I can tell you, ganks are never fun. I had my hauler with almost 100 mil in cargo on auto, got distracted, and accidentally left it sitting at a gate in Dodi all night. Needless to say, that **** got ganked. Good lesson though!

Originally by: Iron Breaker So I have been hanging out in high-sec, mining, building stuff, and staying out of trouble. I come back to the key board, and my Hulk, that cost over 250 mill. Isk, has been suicide ganked. I lost a 250 mill Hulk to a guy in a 1 mill Trasher. So, how is this supposed to be fun for me? I am supposed to pay $15 a month so someone and just come along and destory my ship, I worked very hard for, and now I have nothing? The Insurance is a joke on a Hulk, and no matter how good my skills are I can't toughen it up to last against high sec gankers, and now I have nothing? This is supposed to be fun for me? For $15 a month. So, now I am out my $15, and I have nothing in game... and the fun element is where?
The tears make eve sweet. Guess what its a part of the game. High sec is high security. Doesn't mean safe security. Also don't fly a ship you can't afford to lose.

Happens all the time, 4 to 5 thrashers fitted with 2x gyro's and 7c 200mm autocannons and a MWD can speed in close and take out a hulk with plenty of time before CONCORD respond.

I have never been ganked. Not once. Ever. And I routinely go afk in hi-sec. I'm starting to wonder if it's some kind of myth made up by forum trolls.

WTB _ber Iteron V with 8-8-8 slot configuration AND a huge drone bay.
Also, looking at the KM: 18 items were fitted in the high slots, 52 fitted in mid slots and 27 fitted in the low slots

My guess is that had you not been AFK, and had you been watching local, instead of "staring at rocks", you'd have noticed a sudden increase in the number of ships and been able to do something about it. Like check profiles, kb stats, and so on. These aren't guaranteed methods of preventing you from getting ganked, but if you have a couple guys fly into the system and their killboard list is mostly mining ships, odds are you should warp and dock at the nearest station. This doesn't mean there aren't individuals out there with 5.0 sec status and no miner kills who will warp in with some friends and gank you.
The only thing you can do in Eve is work to minimize the risk as much as you are capable. You can never remove the risk completely.
As for suddenly finding your ship destroyed, be happy you didn't come back from AFK and find yourself in station. __________________________ Obi-wan only felt that way about Mos Eisley because he'd never played Eve Online |

Edited by: Jacob Stiller on 24/07/2011 03:37:20 OP, < 5 minute google search found a well tanked hulk fit. Tanked Hulk
Basically, use shield extending rigs, put a damage control in a low, forget about cargo extenders, forget about the survey scanner, and put shield extenders and resistance modules in the mids (1 extender, 1 EM resist, and 2 invulnerability fields in this setup). Of course, with the much reduced cargohold, you'll have to use Giant Secure Containers and an industrial ship.
My advice is still to get out of mining altogether though.

Everyone keeps telling me to stop mining, but I like making stuff, and it's really all I have time for. I am in school and doing a little mining and crafting is all I have time for. I cant spend all my time just staring at the screen wating for a gank; heck, I am sure one of them had a Warp scrambler any how, so what good would it have done?
People keep saying mining is a was of time; but, pretty much 90% of the stuff CCP keeps adding is usless. Billion isk clothes for chacters..usless; faction warfair..pointless; the faction you join when you enter the game, meaningless; low and null sec about as pointless as a dog chasing its tail. Every time CCP decided to shoot its self in the foot by launching a new expansion, it manages to hit both feet.
I was enjoying myelf couple times an houre mining and crafting and CCP seems to enjoy letting people screw each other over. Is it any wonder the number of players in the game has remained flat for so long?

No, but that has nothing to do with ganks, since those have existed since time immemorial and haven't affected the increase of players during that time. The reason the population curve has gone flat is 100% attributable to a series of disappointing expansions. ùùù ôWe want to try this thing called micro-transactions, but we don't know what it is. I have to agree with the OP in regards to those who want him to leave mining altogether. After all, there are some players who actually say that missioning is boring just like mining as well as commodities trading. But overall, if mining is what someone does best, then that person should stick to it.
But regardless of my support in regarding to mining and how important is really is to pvp players, I still have to agree with the rest of the people here that you should have done better to prepare against a suicide gank. Here is a tip: Fit a medium shield booster II (you may need a Micro-Auxiliary Power Core for this). It might save your future-Hulk's life as it did with mine.

Some people enjoy learning new things.
Here's your chance to learn how to fit your Hulk to survive a Thrasher gank. It will even survive being can baited by said Thrasher.
[Hulk, GankThis] Damage Control II Micro Auxiliary Power Core I
Invulnerability Field II Invulnerability Field II 'Anointed' I EM Ward Reinforcement Medium F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction
Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal I Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal I Modulated Strip Miner II, Veldspar Mining Crystal I
Medium Core Defence Field Extender I Medium Ancillary Current Router I
Warrior II x5 Hornet EC-300 x5

Then keep mining in a properly tanked ship. But then again, you want to mine afk since watching mining lasers cycle is so damn boring. Hence, you mustn't be finding mining all that entertaining after all. From this post, I infer that what you actually like is "crafting." I.e. industry. Most industrialist buy their ore/minerals instead of farming it themselves. However, industry is probably one of the hardest activities for a low SP toon as there are tons of old industry toons out there that can operate at tighter margins than you simply by having a lot of manufacturing skills at 5.
