Famine in Somalia, thousands flee, suffer and die. No one cares.
Shooting and terror in Norway, 100 dead and injured. Spam of threads of people feeling sorry for the victims and families that are as anonymous to them as the famine victims.
Yep, media does not influence you on what is significant to your life....

Some of us are capable of feeling sympathy for both, you know, at different moments. Also, media is the only reason you or I know about EITHER tragedy. Post your own thread about Somalia, and see what responce you get, before you complain?

And yet here we are, playing Internet spaceship, whilst thousands flee, hundreds get shot and Amy Winehouse dies. What has the world come to. http://aerethir.wordpress.com/ |

HAH, somalia is a lost cause. We tried to help them and they bit the hand that fed them. For all I care they can all wither away.

Sadly that is how things often are. Being aware of suffering all over the world doesn't necessarily give one a constructive way to help. Perhaps some of us will give donations to help victims of the Somalia famine, Norway probably doesn't need money so much as sympathy and solidarity. Do what you can where you can.
Honestly though, I don't know what the right policy is for dealing with countries with chronic problems like Somalia. This Norway thing is probably a one-off attack, while Somalia has been reeling for decades now... giving aid like food or money, warlords can easily seize that, or it destroys the local economy (how can their farmers compete on price with food donations?)... going there to help build anything, dig wells, likely get shot or kidnapped for ransom... speak out politically, you get drowned out by budgetary concerns in a lot of countries now (austerity mentality)...
I like Doctors Without Borders, as a charity... it's direct kind of help that can't really be stolen from the people, eases suffering even tho it can't fix the underlying problems.
However even for charity, not everyone has spare money to give. A lot of EVE players are just paying for the game with PLEX, not money, after all. Like someone else said, a PLEX charity drive for various causes could help there.
It's just a hard world, with hard choices. I share your dismay.

Yeah it goes right up there with lamenting the loss of your cat on Face book. WTF.
The selectiveness of human attention; only the misery that is currently being broad casted and in-your-face is acknowledged. And the stupid masses remains ignorant in their own little bubbles.

What would you like to do about it, exactly? Force everyone to care about only what you deem important? Disdain for the "ignorant, stupid masses". Isn't that the kind of attitude that enables someone to blow up a building and shoot 80 people dead?
Irony FTL.

One shooter, 100 dead. This could have ended better had those 100 had access to guns too!

Least of all the people dying, it appears. They're perfectly happy with the local militia blocking access to the aid agencies.
I'll spend my solidarity points for people who don't actively cooperate with their murderers as the Somali people have been doing for 20 years

We haven't seen Void Kraken here for a couple of hours. He probably now hs made arrangements with his job for an extended leave to go to Somalia and play catch-all with al-Shebab. I wish him luck. We will continue wailing in our sorrow for Norway, and click buttons on Facebook.
But in all seriousness. If I had a method to once and for all end this bull**** in Somalia, I'd do it. If I had this indestructable stealth bomber and a real life pilot certificate, I'd be in Kastrup airport now, boarding this aircraft and on my way to Mogadischu, to drop the aid next to the refugee camps, whilst keeping all the militant troops at bay. I'd totally do it, it's Sunday, I have time. However I can't. So I'll donate to the appropriate organisations and hope intensely that I won't see in the newspapers tomorrow, how some leaders of these help organisations have paid their huge houses with swimming pools at the French Riviera.
So yeah: Norway gets Facebook clicks, Somalia gets our money. Seems like an appropriate arrangement. And we don't talk about is, because we are not the Farisees. And thus we give off the impression that we have no empathy for the Somalian people whatsoever.
God, pulling this feel-bad card laced with instructions on how we really should feel if we want to be good people, really p'es me off >( http://aerethir.wordpress.com/ |

That¦s the spirit! You do realise, however, that the local militias will likely just take your aid away from the refugees to redistribute it to those that really need it (= to themselves).
As it stands, the most likely outcome will be some kind of agreement with those militias (in form of a monetary payment), eventually they will consent to distribute the aid (taking their generous share) and will be hailed as heroes by the refugees for that (allowing them to build up a local power base).
Congratulations, you have just further destabilized that country (if that is even possible), all in the name of humanitarian aid!

I can sympathize with the Norwegians - it is a shared experience. I cannot sympathize with Somalians - they are the authors of their own misfortune and I can't imagine living in a country that permits such goings-on. I hope they figure it out some day. __________________________________________________ Name a shrub after me; something prickly and hard to eradicate. |
