CCP, please create pets for us to keep in our Captain's Quarters. You could sell them for a lot of Aurum in the NEX store, maybe 2 or 3 PLEX worth, and I think a lot of people would condsider this much better value than a monocle. I am thinking we could have turtles, guinea pigs, exotic birds, perhaps monkeys, and of course dogs and cats. Let them be animated, wander around the CQ and solicit interaction from their owners. For people with lower-end graphics cards perhaps you could add the option of a Pet Rock.
The pets would be bought with Aurum, but they could require feed which can only be created through Planetary Interaction. Imagine, massive DUST battles could be fought over the worlds supplying cat food to New Eden. Pets could also serve as distribution mission agents, giving their owners missions to procure special foods, toys, and grooming supplies. Others could perform R&D, leading to BPs for pet-related goods. This way pets can still stimulate economic activity despite being "out of thin air" NEX items.
This last bit is more experimental, and I understand totally if it's not considered: the pets could also be Capsuleers.
This would create a good explanation for how your pets are always at whatever station you visit. They have their own mini-pods that let them control some system on your ship, like a single extra turret (kill) or a tractor beam (fetch). They die when you are podded, but since they have their own pods, they too can have a snapshot of their brain activity sent to their medical clone.
Later you could add Pet Ships in the NEX store, so that pets could fly on their own and do PvP with other pilots' animals (Pet vs. Pet combat). You wouldn't control what the pets do in their fights, but you could train them both in your ship battles and in the CQ, teaching them moves and rewarding certain behaviors.
I think this could make CCP a LOT of money if done right and thoroughly. People can be quite crazy about their pets and spend as much money on them as they would their own children. Pets and their services could become a really integral part of the EVE economy and inspire many battles, tears and fond memories. Please consider this idea for a future update. Thanks!

This reminds me of this years April fools which I actually thought was one of CCP's better ideas of this year.
I would perhaps consider getting a pet, an actual thing, not a monocle that is rarely seen, obviously this would be much cooler when multiplayer is added to Incarna.

Imagine the friendly conversation opportunities when you take your space dog for a walk in the station eco-dome or whatever. Or the fun of hanging out in the bar with a parrot on your shoulder that irritatingly repeats everything the pickup-artist beside you says to a girl. Illegal turtle racing in the hallways. Dressing up a monkey in a monocle and NEX clothes. Taking a picture of that and sending fake love notes to your nemesis. Hunting down escaped Minmatar slaves with your dog. The jokes that miners will make about your pet rock, and the witty retort you will make about their mineral-sexual preferences.
Much potential!

I'd definately buy a cat to hunt rats and mice. And then i'd buy hamster and a wheel to spin. If the hamster escapes, the cat catches it. - If i'm not looking, the cat could eat the free hamsters too =)
Love the idea! I'd pay for this.

This something I would pay for.
This would also give me a reason to pay for rent at station I am not at, to keep my pet fed and alive while I am off for an adventure.
This may be a good introduction to bots for Incarna containing limited script lines
I do agree that this original April fool out side of ride on pets, I though was a good deal.
Another idea would be **** Fights. Illegal gambling event allowing players to bet on the out come. Actually killing pets -
interesting illegal Sub profession.

Emergent behavior! Very much in the spirit of EVE. There could be chain reactions started by pets, something like "The Butterfly Effect" commercial we had before.
My dog gets loose and kills another station guest's cat. He declares war on my corp in retaliation, and orders his fleet to camp the station we are at. He buys a hunter-killer cat on the NEX store, doses it with illegal Serpentis pet boosters, and sics it on me and my dog. Trapped in the station, locked out of CQ until my dog's aggression timer runs out, we are chased through the station's maze of corridors by the unstoppable feline. We can only hope to survive until my corpmates can break the blockade.
Others find their pets threatened as well by the fearsome preador now roaming the halls. I realize it will take a well organized pet gang to take down the monstrous, drug-fueled cat. I manage convince a few others to follow me and lend their pets' unique abilities to our common defense. We put an armor-tanked Turtle on point, supported by a pair of Siamese Logi-cats. I outfit my dog with faction dentures and three Teeth Sink IIs, assign him to sustained DPS. We round up a flock of untested star-hawks for a desperate, glass-cannon alpha strike... and the battle is on...

OK I'm really glad to hear some positive responses here. TBH I wrote this sort of tongue-in-cheek... but I think in all my nonsense there could be the grain of a serious proposal.
There would be different kinds of pets. They don't necessarily have to be animals - surely in this technological world there's a place for robot companions. Maybe some could even by cyborgs or androids, who knows?
I can see a role for "normal" pets like parrots and monkeys, that can be led or carried around and serve a social purpose. They inspire conversation, do tricks, get into minor antics, can locate friends in a crowded room, fetch things; some could even speak and say funny things.
I think by broadening the definition of pets (cyborgs and robots, genetically engineered creatures, etc.), there are even more interesting possibilities to consider. You could have pets with even more useful functions...
More functional "premium" pets would do the things animals do and more. These could have a great deal of mobility and interactivity. You could play mini-games with them, give commands to do station tasks or lead you to points of interest. They could be trained or loaded with programs to improve their abilities. For example, a cyber-mouse could be programmed to spy on enemies' CQ and assets, while a sensory-augmented cat or dog could be trained to defend against them. What about a "protocol droid" like C3PO in Star Wars? It could be loaded with different languages to provide instant translation in local chats, assisting communication among players from different countries. Another android could be programmed to recommend ship fittings, search for deals, or read you mission reports.

I want a parrot sitting on my shoulder yelling 'ARRRRMORRHACS' right into my ear all the time - would make me feel truely elite.

Actually I agree that this should be a low priority - spaceship fixes and features really need to come first. I just hope pets can be a higher priority than the "Dress-Up in Space" that is Incarna so far.
At least you can interact with a pet, it's not just for posing.

So far I don't see anything that interest me in the NEX store. If there were guns or rifles and a wide brimmed hat available I might consider buying them. However after seeing what is available. I just dont have an interest in trading a 300M plex card for a few thousand AUR credits. The exchange rate sucks. Be the kind of man that when your feet hit the floor each morning, the devil says "Oh crap, he's up!"

i would like to see them bring in slaves i would like a few slaves to refitt my ship or to empty my cargo hold of loot and then they can reprocess all of it. imagin this your sitting back on your lounge in your quarters watching the big screen with a blue pill or a beer next to you. than suddenly you hear the intruder alert alarm sound in your quarters.. someone has sent one of ther slaves to assinate you. the slave comes up behind you and puts a cold blade to your throat while you sit back on your couch. he slices your vocal cords your unable to scream out to station security for help. the slave picks up your corps and drags it out into the corridor that leads to your ship. he tosses your corps over the railing overlooking your lovely battleship. your lifless body falls a great distance befor hitting the bottom with a thud that breaks every bone in your lifeless corpes. the slave than loots your quarters looking for anything of importance .. its too late your new clone activates you wake up thirtsy for revenge. you scream out your enemy's name that seems to resinate throug out the entire station. reveberating of the metal walls
