One of the best Sand Box MMORPG (well before the so called NGE/CU nerf bat by SOE) will be closing down marking the end of the one of the most controversial MMORPG title around.
Like EVE SWG started with a skillbased system instead of a level based system and opened a world that is full of possibilities. Player Housing, conquerable bases, etc etc.
I was once a part of the SWG Galaxies and as soon as the nerf bat sealed its fate in 2005, moved into different MMORPG looking for the same feel as old SWG.
Finally found it in EVE Online in 2006, and have been doing it for a while.
To all those SWG players that have moved or will be moving to EVE....time to say goodbye to what's left of SWG.
Finally RIP SWG
Any other SWG Pre NGE/CU Veterans here?

Few things were as cool as a stormtrooper fighting a jedi in hand to hand combat

Would you elaborate on the type of nerfs you are talking about?
SWG also had me intrigued in the begining until they pulled off the lottery thing on jedi/sith chars, a'la T2 BPOs..

I heard something to the tune of the game company completely restructuring the entire gameplay into something that wasn't meant to be, and everyone consequently bailed after that.
I never played, but from what I understand it was the equivalent of something like Eve going from sandbox to theme park with levels...just completely ruining what was the original appeal.

I remember it too well really. I had played SWG for 2-3 years and then SOE said we where bringing in the NGE. We all hated it. We all protested against it. But SOE where stubborn arses and said we better love it or take a hike. Most of us did. Its sad really. SWG had such a marvelous flavor, spirit and feeling. You could do so much in it. I mean, we could be fully crafters and only crafters. Resource gatherers too. Setting out harvesters to get oree. I remember fondly having a entertainer and being a part of a "professional" entertainer group. And many saturdays we travelled around from ingame bar to bar and played music together. Socialization!! That is what many game makers forget about in MMOGs these days. They all want their games to be the best, but forget about socialization part and I am not thinking about raiding group!
No, SWG will be mourned, but its a long time since I left that game. I think its best let it die. Maybe finally I can forget that game I had so much fun in with my friends knowing the game finally have passed away.

They are likely closing in because the game will be even more ghost town when Bioware's new starwars MMO launches.
What sony did was as changes including terminating pets from pet classes and all sort of things you normally wouldn't even dream of doing for you player base like allowing every ding bat to become a jedi while nerfing the said class to the ground.
I'm sure there's a list somewhere about the changes, Blizzard did the same with paladin class but at least they did it right after beta in between launch and not when game's been running for years.

I'm worried that EvE might take the same path as SWG when they make it into a P2W PvP Arena. Undoubtedly many of the players will quit. |

I wouldn't worry about that happening. CCP do infact listen and know that would be a terrible move.

The game was still very good up to cancellation. I had a blast playing it a few months ago and I nearly burned out. It's the players who enjoyed the game prior to the changes that scream the loudest, but despite that, the game still outshines many other games on the market.
I played a Structures Trader and I had an absolute blast producing my own ship parts, as well as engaging in space combat to create my own stock. I made a store and everything; you always remember your first customer.
I also ran as a Commando for the ol' shoot 'em up feel, but the Trader was where it was the most enjoyable.

My understanding was that SOE had a license from Lucas for X amount of years - and that that license was expiring. Without the license - SOE couldn't continue the game.
