CCP Soundwave dropped one line during his live interview about allowing destroyers to do extra damage against fighters and fighter bombers. After scratching my head over what a destroyer revision would look like....
- All destroyers drop two turret high slots.
- They gain one mid and one low. Fitting grid is adjusted, especially for destroyers other then the thrashers.
- Destroyers lose 33% of their hit points. They are reduced in signature radius to frigate size. (around 40m or less)
- Destroyers role bonus and ROF penalty are replaced by a 200% damage bonus to fighters and fighter bombers. Other destroyer bonuses are unchanged.
- Mass and speed would remain the same.
Destroyers become slow, small gunboats that are meant to hover over dreads and battleships. Their speed would be enough to keep up with the larger ships easily. Their size would also make them much more harder to hit - a must in any kind of fleet fight. One of my favorite fleet fights I was in an AB Jaguar. I remember being yellowboxed by multiple enemy BS - They couldn't get a conclusive hit on me. These new destroyers would have the equivalent firepower of a BC to deal with fighters and fighter bombers. If you're going to hop into a ship in a fleet fight that can only contribute one thing to the FC - it better be damn good at what it does.
On the other side of the coin. The ships will never be confused with the tackle function that frigates can offer. It's DPS against frigates will be quite a bit less, even w/o a ROF penalty. Less hitpoints allow frigates to compete against them as well. And with a new niche a fringe benefit is AF can be allowed to come into their own via a buff as well.

dont reduce the hp by 33% destroyers are already too frail.
actaully keep existing destroyers more or less as they are but also introduce a tier 2 destroyer for killing fighters and fighterbombers.... make the t2 variant of the tier 2 destroyer a heavy bomber able to launch 2 bombs at the same time.

A "new" Thrasher under my recommendations would have a 6-4-3 layout with five turret slots. An AC variety would put out 250ish DPS before overheating. An arty version would have an alpha around 1300. Against fighters and FB that would be 750 and 3900. All in a much more survivable 40m package. A thrasher with an MSE and a DC has almost 7k EHP. That's without rigs and certainly before using the new mid. Losting 33% hit points might be a bit much, but I wanted to make sure they weren't overpowered against frigates.
Also- how does your superbomber not obsolete stealth bombers?

I really like this idea, it would offer another reason to concentrate on destroyers other than for bubbling and ganks. It gives relatively new players a opportunity to truly change the way a battle goes. Very cool. -

This seems to fit better. Reason being that if you are dealing with fighters and FBs, you are dealing with a carrier, and therefore in a more advanced game state (fleet, low/0.0 space, etc) and hence more likely to be in the game longer with more skill points. I doubt a new player, considering how fast you can get into a dessie, will be getting into positions to deal with fleet warfare on this level, so a T2 variant with the afformentioned capabilities feels like a better fit.

Perhaps a new weapons system 'Flak cannons' could be a idea. This should have a small bonus against frigs and a big bonus against fighters and bombers. Small area effect weapon. could be a idea?

The idea of retooling destroyers to be anti-fighter/FB is one that is being considered by the dev team. After rolling it around I had a few questions. Keep in mind that bringing a destroyer into a battle means that pilot is NOT in a BS, or logistic, or something with a wide array of benefits.
How could destroyers survive in a fleet battle? Fighter bombers especially have quite a few hit points. How much firepower would a destroyer have to bring in order to be effective in this role? How can they have that firepower without being overpowered? Similarly, how can destroyers grow in their role without pushing frigates out of theirs?
Lastly, destroyers as they stand right now desparately need a fix. Three of the four have large fitting issues. They are all too frail. They are all designed around alpha which is a Minmatar advantage. My suggestions fix destroyers on every level without making them overpowered.
