Hey CCP,
Is there any chance that we can get a breakdown of active subs and player stats please. I'm getting sick of the non stop flame war and trolling that GD has become.
This information used to be provided with the QEN and is hardly Top Secret. Are there any plans to release this data? |

Edited by: Mr Kidd on 27/07/2011 00:16:40 There's only one reason to make sub numbers unavailable if that is what is to happen. That reason is because the news is bad. Obviously, if the news was good, CCP would say so. So...if the numbers are unavailable, what does that tell you?

I don't think the data would give you any solid answers as a large portion of the people quitting game have isk to pay for game time for mutiple accounts for years to come and might just keep them active and training characters even if they miss a few days of training here and there between log-ins .
Others had prepaid time too.
And, really to me, the question is about retention and if losing 2% of players might be more like 30% of a certain class of people most committed to "persitant virtual worlds" who have a vastly outsized role in organizing corporations that give newer players long term horizons in the game by showing and established society and history of which they can one day become a part of.
(they probably think less formally more like - thats cool.. im going to get a titan one day and put my name on the influence map .. .or match xyz on the kill boards etc)
If the game becomes more about immediacy I suspect the retention rate will go down .... and I think that will lead to a smaller subscriber base down the line even if new players are attracted at the same rate. At some point, due to less word-of-mouth promotion, even that could decrease.
There is a lot of "if"s and coulds and maybes above.. time will tell.
There are not any better persistant universes out there so EVE will keep players (like myself) with a foot left in this universe even as they try other games.
That will give them some time to keep tweaking things like sov mechanics and dream up new carrots to lure people into small pvp situations (if they switch from carrots from using sticks to make other activities less attractive.. pretty sure that the jump bridge nerf is going to make less people interested in being places where they are in danger ...so net effect on creating targets will probably be negative...)

It doesn't necessarily tell us that things are bad but I agree it sure does tell us things aren't really swimming along nicely.
Certainly if they had got a 10% bump in subscription numbers (a fraction of appocrapha's) they would be announcing it pubically just as normal marketing 101 would tell you to do. Positive buzz is always good to attract new players and make existing players also feel positive about the game (if they could manage the announcment in a way that didn't sound like a jab at dissatisfied player... like "We have attracted new 10k more new subscribers than we would in a typical month. Rest assured our eye is always on retaining both the new and old subscribers and we have active efforts to address some desires of our loyal player base that did not get included with Incarna".

It tells me that the numbers were not in the QEN and only CCP know the true figure. |

I'm confused? You mean CCP is not communicating it's current business status atm? I can't believe it, I was sure monocle sales would be off the charts....
