Piloting a ship manually in EVE would be a great feature, it's really all that EVE is lacking from a space sim, and it could be done without affecting combat at all. Guns would still autofire and target, as this would only affect flying. Ships would still turn and fly at the same rate except you would be controlling it. Manual fly would be toggleable, in that when it is not activate, it is the exact same as it is now.
Press space bar. Camera locks behind your ship. Controls activate: W - Accelerate S - Deccelerate A - Roll left D - Roll right
Mouse controls direction. Ship will still turn just as fast or slow as it does now and fly as fast as it does now, depending on modules, except you would be controlling it more personally.
To warp, target, possibly activate/deactivate modules you would need to press space to toggle off "Manual flying" and resume normal autofly mode.
This could all be done without making combat "faster" or increasing lag. The goal is not to make the game reflex based, but merely to make flying a ship feel more like flying a ship.

Manual flight = more server calls = ROFL LAG.

ya it would take more server resources.. and since i fly a slow BS it really doesnt make a difference.. but it would be awesome to be flying something fast. you could fly formations.
if they go to manual fly, they would defiantly have to support joystick. :)

Originally by: Zekedios Rex I do not understand Eve's client calls
Eve Online: A Popular Internet Spaceship MMORPG has a ticks system much like any other MMO that has to handle a lot of users at a time.
Now, unlike a normal flight sim like you want it to be that would poll for user input multiple times per second and update accordingly, the Eve client and server operate on exactly one tick per second (assuming optimal conditions; i.e. no lag) and would not allow for any fine control like you are seeking whatsoever.
So, you ask, EnderCapitalBadPoster, what does this mean?
What this means is, exactly once per second your client commands are updated from the server to the client (again, assuming no lag) and this would effectively make your flight controls useless.

Stupid responses. I swear these forums are nothing but trolling.
If you can click in space and turn in that direction there is no reason you cannot do the same with a mouse turn. No one said that you would need "fine" control or faster control, in fact, the same control was said and even emphasized. It could be the same as it is now, except a different control scheme.

I do agree with the op that doubleclicking is a very VERY bad method of moving your ship around. I do not like the joystick ideas, but more something like in the homeworld games.
When you want to execute a move you will get the x-y movement vector and the option to adjust the z displayed on your tactical overview.
This will give better control over your movement. Maybe with some extra orbitting and maneuver options.

Since you want to be a ****tarded mouthbreather, then, here is a better response:

Commonly Proposed Ideas
Originally by: Commonly Proposed Ideas A Joystick Compatible Eve
Yes, its says joystick and not WASD-controls, but its basically the same and this has been suggested a zillion times, so why make a new thread about it. If you really wanted this you'd plow through the zillion posts about it and try to tie them all together in the thread that has been deemed the official commonly suggested thread.
Now there's nothing to see here now - move along to the commonly suggested idea thread that this is about! It's from 2007 and you can find it here.

Yes, except it is not your job to police the forums. Either report the thread, be constructive or not a ****, or move on.
What is up with sandbox games always having some of the worst forums in the history of games? It's like people raging out on too much peeveepee to act decently to each other.

Oh look, its this thread again.
1. Eve ticks at 1 update per second. Imagine trying to control an interceptor with one course correction per second. exactly.
2. You just proposed a 2 dimensional control scheme for a 3 dimensional movement grid. Your control scheme breaks badly if I want to go straight down. Even after you add two extra buttons for up and down.
3. Eve suffers from bad latency. As an Australian player, it takes about 3 seconds for my ship to react to a course change right now. So, ticking once a second, three seconds behind the action.
4. Constant server course changes will increase lag badly, which is contrary to a key CCP goal.
5. You are captain of this:

Not the pilot of this: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gWPXEcUol70/TcLemeICbbI/AAAAAAAACcU/xQeezroIqD8/s1600/Eurofighter+Typhoon+by+jet+planes+%25283%2529.jpg
We are done here, thread over. Now tell your friends so they don't come and post the EXACT SAME QUESTION tomorrow.

There's the other argument that it's the wrong method of thinking to see yourself as a 'pilot', instead of a 'captain'. Pilots of things like fighter craft and most other aircraft make very minute adjustments constantly, and have complete control over the smallest motion.
Captains, on the other hand, delegate speed, heading and general pathways. Heading adjustments are a gradual thing, as are speed.
This isn't a flight sim. It's a ship sim. And we're not talking a boat, but SHIPS. Big boys, not your coast guard cutters and other dingy's.

I was being constructive, just not in the way that you wanted. I helped you by pointing to the "official" thread from 2007 that was deemed the place to put your [sarcasm]very brilliant and unique[/sarcasm] idea.
And I constructively suggested that you'd gather the stack of threads already about this into that thread making it better or.. well.. something.
I'm sorry that you go emotional over the fact that you didn't give this idea enough credit that you'd actually take the time to do some research on it and that you'd rather moan at the poor mmorpg attitude of the playerbase, but hey.. at the least you're helping your own "statics" on your attitude.
Good luck on your flight simulator!
