.. and buy characters, I mean the process of buying PLEX via CCP or sites such as shattered crystal.
Do people generally look down apon this? I have been playing for a year or so and I am rather suprised that this topic hasn't been brought up. I work 3 days a week while I study and don't generally have many things to pay because I live at home, and don't spend too much money on going out. EVE is my hobby that I would like to invest in.
I am thinking of buying a high SP character that can fly carriers, and I would know what I would do with it too.
So discussion, do you guys look down apon people who buy plex with real money? And further more those who buy characters from the character bazaar?
Interested to know.

I know people who've done both, and it is not generally "looked down upon". However, if you buy a toon and then proceed to loose lots of shineys because you're unfamiliar with the mechanics you've suddenly involved yourself in (for instance, let's say carriers, given your example) it's quite likely that you will be mocked harshly. Of course, given that you've been playing for a year, I don't doubt you'll figure out how things work before undocking something shiny. ----------------------------------------------
Say "Amarr ships suk, lol." I dare you.

Generally only looked down upon if you let your lack of experience show and somebody finds out you bought the character. But some people could find fault with anything, so, meh. It's also far less looked down upon if you have a strong main you "grew yourself" and only purchased alt chars to supplement it. But that's also not a rock-solid rule either.
Personally, I don't really care how the characters were obtained, be it self-growth or purchase with ISK you earned ingame or ISK you got from selling PLEX or whatnot - the only thing I care about is what you do with them. _

People love it when you have a 600,000,000 isk ship and don't know how to use it, and when you don't understand the game mechanics, and accidentally get yourself blown up to another player for not understanding why he or she was able to shoot at you. People don't look down upon that, in fact they encourage it!
In all seriousness, I don't know of anyone who has an issue with people selling PLEX for isk. Just make sure you understand what you're doing with it and don't get yourself into a situation where if you lose your ship, you are forced to buy another PLEX to replace it. AKA "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose."

It's only looked down upon in the sense that you will become a laughing stock if you do something stupid with your purchased character.
If you are a competent player, then IN GENERAL you won't have to worry about anything. Purchasing a character from the bazaar is NOT a substitute for actual gameplay experience. ----------

It actually comes up quite often, especially during the recent collective dummy-spit by the player community in relation to the NeX/Fearless leak/CQ fiasco.

Curious choice of wording considering the number of times in my life I have ever heard someone talk about "investing" in their hobby.
Generally speaking, people that I mix with only care that you know what you're doing with the ship you're flying right now. If you're a three-year-veteran who doesn't understand why you don't mix shield and armour tank, they'll despise you more than the guy who bought Ori16 this week.

Yeah, this comes up now and again. It's actually come up fairly recently.
The big mistake is new people thinking they can buy their way to success. We see that now and again. Someone was on here a few months back asking all these FNG questions when ... everyone already knew the character name as it had been resold any number of times. Mostly they were treated politely ... here ... But then this is actually a fairly polite forum ... compared to some others ... Not sure how well they were treated in game.
Now ... as a matter of opinion ... I think most people will respect you more if they know you did everything yourself but that's just a question of degree and only my opinion. If you know what you're doing - that is the main thing.
If you have an experienced veteran that fully understands what they're doing and just wants to short cut their way to an alt ... most people really don't care.
We had a guy a while back who brought this up. In his case - he already had a very advanced character - but his Alliance wanted him to go buy a character to fly something big, I've forgotten what. So - to help out his alliance - he did. He actually seemed to prefer doing something else personally - but he wanted to help out his alliance more - so he got a guy they needed.
The real question in your case is whether or not you're right. Is a years experience enough to fly a Carrier?
Well ... I guess you'll find out if you try it.
The last thing is something I mentioned the last time this came up ... which is that by depriving yourself of the experience of bringing up a character all by yourself ... you're depriving yourself of the fun of doing so. But then ... that guy was talking about "OK ... I bought my way here ... now what do I do?" He seemed bored with what he'd achieved. He didn't have trouble using the characters ... it's just that once he had them ... he didn't care that much and was wondering what to do next in the game. If you do everything yourself - you don't miss out on the fun of doing so.
I understand the idea of spending money on the game. When I retired, I needed something to do to pass the time and at that time Planetside was it. Then I moved to EVE. I've got a number of accounts and use them in several different ways. That lets me do one thing for a while ... and then go do something completely different, which helps keep me from burning out. If I had to just play one of my accounts all the time ... I think I'd get bored.
For me ... I play the game to have fun and doing things all by myself gives me a greater sense of accomplishment than if things came to easily. But that's just me.

I think one of the reasons those who buy and sell Plex aren't criticized too harshly is that the players buying the Plex that they sell to fund their accounts so they don't have to pay real life money to play. Sort of a symbiotic relationship.
But obviously as everyone else has stated if you buy big shiny things without knowing what to do with them and blow up repeatedly you will be mocked.

I've bought PLEX for $, legally, and think that it's okay, but there are two reasons you should not buy a character?
1. You get your skillz all at once, and so often don't know how to best use them, compared to if your character had evolved slowly. Some corps might be closed for bought characters for this reason.
2. The character you buy might have all sorts of reputations from years of active play. Old enemies, people holding grudges against him.
