Original thread: Linkage
Hey guys, looking for some help with wording for a proposal I want to bring up in the CSM Assembly Hall.
Long version: right now, when flying in space your camera stays static relative to, well, space. Your ship spins and turns beneath you and your camera doesn't move unless you move it. This is all well and good, but I find myself using a lot of mouse clicks to make my camera face forward relative to my ship, because I'm OCD like that, and I like that view. It feels more natural to me.
So I'd like a simple option that lets me tell my camera drone to stay put relative to my ship, and let the rest of the universe twirl away as it will. Kind of like the...unique...maneuver the Shuttle pulls at the very beginning of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgrGO0zPk9g. Or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXlIrs2cI3s&feature=related. Notice in the second video how the camera doesn't move unless the user moves it manually. (Please keep in mind EVE would be much smoother and look much nicer than these examples. Orbiter's cool but its graphics can feel a little clunky.)
I'm not sure what to call that, but I'm sure it has a name, and I wannit. Some pros: should be pretty easy to implement, will make many mundane things like exiting warp by a gate more cinematic, and will drastically improve immersion for many. Think about it: this is space. There IS no up or down. Making your ship the frame of reference will, for some, make things feel much more real. Cons: I can't think of any, but I'm open to suggestions for both pros and cons.
So please give any and all feedback you may have. Most people I've talked to about it really like the idea, it just needs some peer review and some shining-up before bringing to the CSM. Thanks guys.

Edited by: Ayrala on 01/08/2011 17:26:56 I support this.
And another thing (not really related) since this is space, and there is no up or down, why can't my ship fly upside-down? It'd be more complicated to implement than the current method, but this IS space...
Edit- Hmm...our display pictures are disturbingly similar.

I'd use 3 camera views
-One tactical view max zoomout for laggy fleet fights. Should show entire grid(or a part of it if it's stretched too much)
-One that is locked to ship looking either where the ship is moving or at the target i'm orbiting or keeping distance to. Or some smartview that tries to view both your orbit target and where your nose is heading.
-One for missions or small gang fight where camera is zoomed out as close as possible but showing to optimal+falloff

I like the idea of having the ability to be able to lock your camera view onto your currently selected target.
Still like also having the option of being able to lock it in a forward facing position as well.

Pursuit camera would be interesting, especially when flying an Interceptor or something fast.
Viewing your target is easy, find the button that says "Look At"
The real reason why there aren't more camera controls, is because we don't really have direct control over the ship.
I always try to explain it as;
You (the player at the keyboard in your house) are like the Captain.
Your character, the one with hours of SP dedicated to ship operation, is taking orders from you via the keyboard and mouse.
You tell him "Take me into orbit of that target" and he drives the ship as he pleases.
That's why there is no WASD control. You (the player) aren't driving. The character is. |

I would like to see a bubble view.
Lot of times I zoom out because I like to see all ships in the sceen, but a lot of times this leads to me zooming out so far I can't see my ship or any effects.
So i'd like to have a wider, bubble view.

Pursuit camera! That's what it's called...
HELLBOUND, what do you mean by bubble view exactly? Just a view that's way zoomed out so you see the whole "bubble" of the scene?

Honestly? It all sounds nice, but tbh i think the best thing ccp could do for hte camera 'drone' (imo something that can move independantly at literally multiple AU/sec isnt a drone.. i'd love to see CCP alter the fiction to show that the 'drone' is actually a sensor-implemented simulation of whats going on outside the ship - it just makes more sense) is to slow the camera drone WAY down. It moves freakishly fast and as such, an important sense of scale is lost when you spin a ship in space (ie, moving your camera around it). The bigger the ship, the slower you should be able to spin it.
+10 internets if you understood that.
