So I was talking on the warfare forums trying to get clarification on what sentry drones are used for and came up with a idea . Now provided that I can run T2 drones in a level 4, if I take aggro and cycle the sentry drones out depending on their range would this be reasonable effective way to run the mission while I stay stationary? Thanks for the input. It's better to burn out then fade away... Carpe Diem. |

It has been working fine for me, and I don't have T2 sentries yet. (long grind to T2's)

Depends on range, what sentries you are using, and what you are trying to hit.
Garde II's will do pretty well against cruiser, BC, and BS targets at even close range. Most of the other sentry drones don't.
For missions against angels I usually take bouncers to rip 'em apart long range at berserkers once they get close since bouncers don't track well even with omni's.
T2 takes a bit of a grind but it is more than worth it.

Never used sentries much myself, I just let my T2 ogs wreck everything. Mostly wanted to add tho don't stand completely still, moving targets always take less damage. At least orbit your sentries.

Also, you can get damage boost rigs for Sentries (I have not tried these with the T1 version) but basically just as you say, sit in place, orbit your sentries, shoot the fast closers first. If your sentries take aggro pull them in and re-deploy, if a frig gets in under them, unload light drones. It may seem like alot of drone management, but it becomes easy-mode real fast.
T2 Sentries are FAR better then the T1 versions IMO, but it is quite a grind to train. T2 sentries have sped up my Domi missioning considerably. Training T2 heavy drones helped a little, but getting T2 sentries changed everything for the better in my case.

Thank you all for the inputs. By now I'm used to the drone management (start mission, pull aggro, deploy LCD for Frig, next MCD for cruisers, hash and repeat). Of the four racial sentries what would you recommend for long -> medium range and then medium -> short range? Looking at the Evelopedia Grade's seem ideal for M -> S, but nothing really definite for L -> M. It's better to burn out then fade away... Carpe Diem. |

Edited by: Bane Necran on 04/08/2011 12:21:19 I find just using T2 Berserkers for missions is the best all around option. They have the fastest speed and best tracking of any heavy drone, so they make short work out of any Frigates and Cruisers, and still take out Angel Battleships fairly quick, although for other faction Battleships T2 Ogres would be faster.

Gardes are good for M -> S range in most cases. You might have trouble hitting e.g. Angel battleships orbiting under 10km -- I had this problem in an Angel Extravaganza the other day. Then I fit a web and they died in a fire. With this setup I find the biggest headache to be those pesky elite cruisers that like to orbit just out of web range.
As far as L -> M range, the range on all the other racial sentries is pretty ridiculous, especially with an omni or two. I find I have good results matching the weak resist of the rats I'm fighting. So Curators for Sanshas, Wardens for Guristas, etc.

Edited by: Diamaht Nevain on 04/08/2011 19:48:36 Wardens for long range works best for me. They get you out to 78k with one drone link. I keep them out till around 40k then switch to Garde.
The Kin and Therm damage types are really good all purpose and if you are running Gallente missions they are ideal. Keeping 5 of both leaves me just enough room to have two sets of small and medium drones for tailoring damage (Hobgoblin/Warrior and Hammerhead/Valkrye).
This seems to be a good all around setup and doesn't require me to change drones between missions. =============================== Two words: Internet Spaceships |

Have T2 sentries trained up but haven't really found them to have a major advantage over combat ones, in PvE anyway.
Heh,
Everyone has their style. I have found sentries to be better generally for most missions. This is for several reasons.
1. With 2x Omnis (I run 2 fed navy omnis) sentries have amazing tracking. They instapop frigs at range and track perfectly even in the angels extravaganza (ie close up) missions.
2. Instant damage. They don't have to fly out to meet the enemy.
3. Aggro. There are a number of missions that have either drone or proximity aggro.
Usually missions involve targetting all frigs first. Pop them with sentries. Often my sentries pop them faster than I can target new ones. Move up the food chain. If a few frigs get too close I ignore them till last. Finally recall sentries and sick some hobs on the remaining frigs.
There are some missions I prefer heavies. These are missions that require movement. I just did one last night (cant thing of the name) but it was a drone mission and the gate is like 35km from the entrance. In these missions I do the more traditional drone fight. Warp in. Target frigs, start moving to gate. Release appropriate drones (usually starting with light or mediums, then recalling and sending heavies). Often the timing is just right that I am getting to the gate as the last rat dies.
Plus sentries are the only drones that get a damage bonus from a rig. 20% extra damage if you use 2 rigs.

Yup, sentry Domis with 4/5 skills and 2 Sentry Damage Augmentor rigs, 2 Omnis and a Drone Augmentor (the range highslot thingy) are the way to go. I also like to have a navcomp to up the speed of lights, meds and heavies.
This is flexible for different mission types - i.e. sometimes you can start at 70-odd km range, aggro, and pop everything (including frigs) with the Sentries (Wardens for pure range, Gardes for medium range and more damage). At other times, when you're plonked in the middle of heavy aggro, set lights on frigs first, meds on Cruisers and BC, and Heavies on close BS, meanwhile kiting out to range so you can set up the Sentries for any un-aggroed groups.
Guns to taste. I'm close to getting my T2 Large Rails soon :)
This style of doing missions is a bit more active and micro-managey than the afk style (aggro room, fly away from mobs, set armour rep on perma, loose ogre iis on aggressive), it also requires a Cap Booster (because of using up mids for drone buff modules - afk style you fill mids with cap rechargers so the armour rep can run perma). *****

Fit a couple omnidirectional tracking thingies and you won't have that problem. My Gardes can occasionally take out orbiting frigates at 10km, and never have problems with anything bigger.
For long range:
Pick whichever drone does best damage type vs. your enemies. For short range Gardes will out-DPS most other drones against most targets.
Wardens do terrible damage at extreme range with poor tracking Bouncers do good damage at long range with poor tracking Curators do ok damage at long range with ok tracking Gardes just win as long as you're within 40km
