So i'm trying to figure out which way to lean toward. I will be able to do both, but a lot of my skills are in missiles so i've been leaning toward the rook. But i've been reading that falcon is a lot more useable for larger gangs because of it's suprise i jam you ability. the rook is more of a small gang type of ship but you tend to lose a lot of them.
Anyone have experience with both and lend a helping hand in choosing which direction to go.
I will be flying in blobs and i will also be flying in small gangs maybe even solo sometimes. But the majority will be blob warfare.
Thank you kind sirs!

Edited by: Nomad Vherokic on 03/08/2011 15:11:45 Depends if you need the cloak or not. What DPS you can apply in a gang is far less relevant than surprise and jamming capability. In a small gang fight a falcon uncloaking at the right moment can turn the tide of battle.
EDIT: a blob is a blob is a blob... as long you can cycle your modules on the targets you are assigned whilst waiting the ten minutes or so of lag out until you re-appear back in a station in your pod, then all is well... --

The weapons on a Falcon are pretty much unnecessary as you'll rarely want to be in a position to use them, unless you're doing some sort of solo/small gang blaster fit stuff. So don't sweat not having good gun skills. In fleets, for the most part, the Falcon is the most useful of the two. The Rook can be effective in fleets, but you really need to know how to use it well in order to survive. As both have the same jamming capability, the Rook only really shows its strengths in small gangs, or solo (if you can get anyone to actually engage you solo). The Rook truly is an incredible ship--so much so that if properly fit and employed, there's very few 1v1s that you cannot either win or escape.
Good Luck!

I'd go with Falcon just because people will ***** to no end about it.
And then get the almighty "Because of falcon"

My falcon is actually called "Because of Falcon".
Anyway, in my opinion (as someone who's flown them since they became available) they're on a par with each other. The rook is a superb combat ship, provided you can take advantage of it's long range combat capability - at close range, it's a bit fragile, so you really want to be using it as a standoff heavy missile boat. If that's not how your gang rolls, then it's not nearly as amazing.
Falcon on the other hand, has pitiful amounts of firepower, but trades it all for a covert cloak. Covert cloaking is INCREDIBLY powerful, because it means you can choose when you enter the fight. Hint: It's rarely right at the start, when everyone's picking their 'primaries'.
If flown smart, the Falcon is very potent, and much feared. So is the Rook. Ask whether the firepower is more important to the gang, than the covert cloaking.
(For bonus points, a Falcon can field cloak, probe launcher, cyno, because it doesn't need it's highslots).
And just for a laugh, the Falcon is probably the best blaster ship in EVE. (Which isn't much of a stretch I know). 3x Neutron blasters, some damage mods, a covert cloak and some jammers is actually ... almost exactly what you need to be an effective blaster boat.

Doesn't the Sweet spot of the ecm mods get in the way of the blasters? what i mean by that is ecm is best at what like 38km?? And blasters are effective at like 6km? Isn't that counter productive?

Not exactly. ECM will always hit anywhere within optimal and since it doesn't need to track, well, it does just as well up close as it does at longer range.

No. You misunderstand how optimal range and falloff works. Any point within optimal, means jammers work 100%.
