Edited by: Bane Necran on 04/08/2011 11:24:27 Apparently, the US air force has been brainwashing their nuclear missile officers with a special "ethics" program that employs bible quotes in an attempt to justify nuking the hell out of civilian populations.
"But then again, people have been using religion to justify war against others since the beginning of recorded history, so I'm not surprised about this new elaborated twist. In fact, including a Nazi scientist's idea of morals and the official justification for Hiroshima makes total sense."

Well I'm certainly going to sleep soundly tonight knowing that the guys with the red buttons have been brainwashed into thinking everything they do is morally justified.
That's all we need.. more religion with bigger guns.

Odd program, but whatever works. The best way to assure that there's not a nuclear holocaust is to make it known to your potential enemies that you will strike back. How they go about doing that, I don't care.

History has shown the people will kill for religion.
But the socialist/secularist answer to that turned out to be an equally effective murder machine as worship of state replaced worship of deity.
This is why the aliens are afraid to land.

Scary, but I find myself agreeing with Jada again. Mutually assured destruction saved the world from nuclear winter in the cold war era and there's little to disupute it.
Also Nec, you ought to know that nuking Japan saved more Japaneese lives than it took. The planned offensive to take the home islands would have slaughtered millions more through conventional warfare.

I know that's the revisionist history/propaganda they teach in US schools now. I've even heard people claim the Japanese are grateful for being nuked. The Japanese are one of the strongest voices for nuclear disarmament now.
Lets see what people who were actually involved think.

The Hiroshima Myth
In America, no matter how bad, we justify it later. The civil war, for example, was not over slavery.
And I should also point out, that famous "crossing the Delaware" by George Washington was to attack the enemy in their beds on Christmas. But that war also has some other motivations not talked about as well.
As soon we we give up the comic book versions of history do we become free from having to repeat it.

You realize some of those quote support my point?
And how's this propaganda?
The planned invasion of the home islands was very public (unlike the nuclear program) information. I suppose you could say it was all a farce and we intended to gamble winner-take-all style on a barely-tested weapon, but that smacks of incompetence on the scale that our generals didn't show in WW2.

Religion is used to control the people on a MASSIVE scale in the US. Just look at how often they add some bible quote to the most random statements.
Why do they do it? Because there's enough uneducated people who will buy into anything if they hear "Jesus" or "god". It's happening in other countries too, and of course other religions are used in the same manner.
I'm happy that in Switzerland, they tell the churches and religion to stay the hell away from politics. Our real life should be governed by COMMON SENSE and LOGIC, both qualities religions mostly don't have...

any smart aliens would attack Earth from orbit. moving directly to ground or air war would end up bad for them since well humans have this war thing pretty well figured out with in our own atmosphere.

OTOH, the best way to ensure a nuclear holocaust is to keep active nuclear weapons around for a long time. (Wait long enough and something will go wrong...)
Case in point: During the Cuban missile crisis, the Soviets gave the Cubans a handful of tactical nukes on short range missiles and these missiles were under Cuban, not Soviet, control. Some of the US Admirals were pushing hard for an invasion of Cuba. If Kennedy has listened to his Admirals, the Cubans might have nuked the invasion fleet and sparked WWIII. (Needless to say, the Soviets never let their nukes be under someone else's control again.)
MAD can work, but it has two problems, the first being initial inexperience, i.e. figuring out what safeguards and protocols to put into place to avoid spuriously bringing about Armageddeon[1], and secondly, the law of averages says that the longer you have MAD, the probability of executing MAD approaches near certainty.
[1] The Cuban missile crisis revealed that the US military only had one plan for a nuclear exchange and it was simply to nuke everybody everywhere. There were no plans for a limited exchange or to only attack one country. The crisis also revealed that the US President and Soviet leader had no direct means of communication which made negotiating difficult. (The hot line was installed after the crisis.)

Quite true. One can only hope that the human race makes it off of this planet before something comes along and ruins everything, be it natural or human inflicted. Then again, everything comes to an end eventually, so even if we colonize the entire galaxy, people will eventually be worrying about what to do when the galaxy is destroyed. After that, we'll be worrying about how to get rid of the second law of thermodynamics, so as to prevent the universe from fizzling out.
Maybe we should just get it over with and nuke ourselves into oblivion now while we still can.

8. Fundamentalist Religion and Fundamentalist Consumerism. American culture offers young Americans the ôchoicesö of fundamentalist religion and fundamentalist consumerism. All varieties of fundamentalism narrow oneÆs focus and inhibit critical thinking. While some progressives are fond of calling fundamentalist religion the ôopiate of the masses,ö they too often neglect the pacifying nature of AmericaÆs other major fundamentalism. Fundamentalist consumerism pacifies young Americans in a variety of ways. Fundamentalist consumerism destroys self-reliance, creating people who feel completely dependent on others and who are thus more likely to turn over decision-making power to authorities, the precise mind-set that the ruling elite loves to see. A fundamentalist consumer culture legitimizes advertising, propaganda, and all kinds of manipulations, including lies; and when a society gives legitimacy to lies and manipulativeness, it destroys the capacity of people to trust one another and form democratic movements. Fundamentalist consumerism also promotes self-absorption, which makes it difficult for the solidarity necessary for democratic movements.

One of the reasons why consumerism has been propagated is because it is the destroyer of religions, but not just that, it's the destroyer of everything. No religion, be it Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, Talmudism, or any other fundamentalist or lunatic mindset can resist the urge to consume.
Fortunately consumerism is also coming to an end as it's simply unsustainable. That's why the world loleconomy (what we have today isn't economy it's consumerism) is dying, consumerism can't be eternally sustained on finite resources.
However the US isn't the greatest threat to world security, despite being the only nation in history to use tactical nuclear weapons against a state (in itself a war crime and crime against humanity), there is one little nation in the Middle East that constantly threatens to nuke everything and everyone in the vicinity with nukes. It is now supplying ICBM technology to India and has ordered India to build it a few ICBM's. Why would this nation be building ICBM's when it claims it's being threatened by it's neighbours? Since when do it's neighbours live 20k KM's away?
You want to stop lunacy? Stop Israel first, then we can move on to the United States of Israel, the United Kingdom of Israel and the Israeli Union.

Any country without nukes can play the MAD game, too. They just have to do it differently, and in some cases they have been doing so successfully. For the US and other nuke possessing countries, it's, "Don't **** us off or we'll nuke you!" For many countries in the Middle East, it's more along the lines of, "Don't **** us off or you'll be first on our list when we do get nukes!" The US is upset right now because they're first on a lot of lists and they don't know what to do about it.

In for another session of America bashing. And this program (if the news source is even authentic and not some low grade tabloid) makes sense. If, and I hope that will never happen, those officers will be given an order, they should carry it out without hesitation in seconds, no matter what. So, it helps if they know they are doing the right thing.

I've taken a similar course, albeit in another military organisation. It isn't about religious denominational dogma, it's about the Law of Armed Conflict, the ethics of taking life and the issues of proportional response. The references to St Augustine are made in the same lectures across the world in military academies as a small part of a much more complex study to ensure that those empowered and authorised to make decisions to take a life do so with appropriate educated consideration.

I have no problem with educated consideration, but religion seldom offers that. It demands blind faith and obedience, and that makes it a powerful tool for manipulating people.
