THIS IS WRONG!!
Why should the bear be shot?!
These people, young men or old whatever they were in the wilderness, in the bear's area.
They knew the risks going out there, the bear did nothing wrong, its a freackin wild bear for crying out loud!!
Hate this ****

Cause are you telling me if you're out in the wilderness and it's you or the bear you're going to let it eat you and tell yourself "Well i am in it's territory."
For all we know the bear was hunting them rather than scared/defending itself.
Now people going out of their way to "track ole choppy bear" down is another thing, but then and their bear or me yeah i'm shooting it.

From what I heard the bear had already done the damage, and they went looking for it to shoot it!

It could be argued that humans are even more primitive than animals in some regards.

You swim in the sea and a shark attacks you, whose to blame?
Obviously the shark because he doesn't know your higher in the food chain. oh wait.......
The bear was always going to be killed if it was possible, you can't let them think it's ok to hunt humans. But the organisers of the trip are as much to blame.
Just playing devils advocate here but at the end of the day the bear is a victim of circumstance, the people who were attacked were victims of some one else's neglect.

All bears are dangerous so people know to stay away from them, the bears and the humans are happy to live apart from each other. But when a bunch of people go wandering around in bear territory and get themselves mauled everyone goes nuts and mob mentality goes into overdrive, these people don't think that perhaps they should be avoiding the bears.. they just want their vengeance.
They'll be sorry when all the bears are extinct and they have to resort to killing each other for sport.
..whoever "they" are.. America I assume. It always is.

Humans make for bad eating. Our diets consist of so many chemicals and toxins sharks won't even eat us. They just take a bite and move on in disgust.
A bear would never selectively hunt humans with so many yummy vegetarian animals everywhere. I think bears mostly eat non-meat things themselves, anyway.
This is almost certainly a male defending its territory, or about protecting cubs. And the silly humans probably had no idea what to do.

Unless it's in Alaska we dont have too many polar bears in America...and those parts of Alaska are mostly oil/logging country due to the extreme remoteness of it. Last I checked there weren't/arent too many natural great wild boars running around Europe anymore. (those like/d to attack people too) So it's not really an American trait rather a human one.
But your are forgiven for your superior European intellect/logic driven statement or whatever other part of the world you hail from that is full of uppity *******s.

Most logical conclusion:
Being a tool-using species, bring weapons. If you don't bring a weapon, it's like a dog forgetting his teeth, if they were removeable.
I recently spoke to a bear hunter who says that bear spray - a chemical weapon much like mace or pepper spray - is more effective than a gun. I have a book that has recorded accounts of bear attacks detailing how bears have managed to cover 300-400 yards AFTER being shot in the heart by guns using "hunting cartridges" though that assumes deer (probably .30-06 or .270).
So if you go traipsing into the forest like a dingbat without some means of defense, you deserve what happens. Simple. Why should the bear suffer?
Perhaps this is a result of kids being raised in such manner that no matter what they do or say, their parents keep telling them how special they are. So they go in thinking they are immune to consequences.
Even God would chalk you up to a dummy kill if you thought you could fly and jumped off the roof.
My least favorite is what goes on in Florida. Let's face it, people leave Florida to get away from "damned yankees" yet nothing screams damned yankee louder then when they come down from Newark and bring their little irritating yip yip dogs. They also bring their crap voting habits which are destined to turn Florida into another "people's republic" so they are already disliked for that.
So it's sooo satisfying when annoying little yip yip dog goes and decides to play their number on the nearest alligator. The latter of which proceeds to give the newcomers a more welcome message to the Sunshine state by eating their little ****eater dog and making Florida, and the world, a better place to live.
And what happens? Usually the gator is hunted down and killed. Blast. That makes just about everybody angry. They would sooner see the damned yankees pack it up and go back to Newark or New York or Boston or whatever socialist pit they came from.
I must add that these people, comeing from disarmed areas, usually have no guns and they get a home invasion too if they move in too close to a thug-infested 'hood. Yes, they check the tags of the car and if they see New York, Massachussets, or Illinois, that says "unarmed' and in they go. I've seen this - but that's another topic. Unfortunately the thugs are seldom hunted down and killed like the gators.

Unfortunately, it's one of those 'necessary evils'. They shot the bear because it showed no fear of humans, which means that it's likely to have multiple encounters with humans in the future that could prove to be fatal . . . again. Kinda like we should do with murderer's more often than not, but whatever. . . . |

You're the uppity one, look who got so easily offended by a random guy on the internet. And I never claimed to be superior, if you want to perceive me as superior however, you're free to do so.
Now that I've read an article pertaining to this thread I finally have some context on it, rather than the third hand news that the OP posted. Seems like the bear was killed in self defence, at least that's how the paper described it. I can now rest easy knowing that the bear was not needlessly slaughtered.

Peoples logic of it being ok just because we are higher in the 'food chain' is just bull...
We are only higher because we can make tools, otherwise we would be very low down..
Do not get me wrong the loss of life is bad, but why should it turn into the loss of two lives?
Why is an animals life valued lower than a humans? Life is Life regardless of where it comes from.
Killing the bear while it was attacking, fair enough, self defence, thats different, but when you go looking for the bear, how is this different from hunting?!

It's hardly murder.. if it was murder then I suppose you'd rather the polar bear be kept alive and taken to court?
Humans live in towns and cities, animals in forests and wildlands.

If the bear could talk im rather certain it would elevate its self and species above us. It's just the way of things. And no nearly all primates are high on the food chain due the whole superior intelligence thing. (They even eat each other when fighting other factions.) Although im more than fairly certain they get eaten by Tiger sharks all the time in the jungle/Savannah. Which then get eaten by the alligators.
And for the last time the bear mauled people in their tents and other members of the party shot it in the act in Norway.

Wow, man... some bear kills someone I know, I'm gonna catch em, put some gloves on him, a muzzle, and **** that bear up, for real.
Being a wild animal doesn't make you above the law, most bears will keep away from humans, this one failed, this one attacked, and now it's dead, good thing too.
All you have to do nowadays is live in the wild, then you're allowed to kill any humans who come into "your" forest? ****in bull****, if it was some wild human you'd all be goin "oh man it's a psycho oh mah gawd"

The value of a human life is much more than some stupid bear.
"THIS IS WRONG!!"
no its not.
"Why should the bear be shot?!"
killed people.
"These people.....in the bear's area."
humans own this world, FYI.
"They knew the risks going out there"
so they deserved it?
"the bear did nothing wrong"
it killed a young man and injured others, what are you peta?

Pfft, we don't own jack. We barge around plating office blocks and warehouses everywhere but we have no more claim to the Earth than the rest of the life living on it. Humans will become extinct at some point and then our "claim" will count for nothing. Life will go on, who knows, maybe the polar bears will become the dominant species and they'll discover the voyager probes and the Crypt of Civilization. Then they'll be laughing at our claim.

Sure we do.
simple:
Situation: Human wants land.
Problem: Bear lives in forest.
Solution: Human bulldozes forest.

By your logic I can bulldoze your house and claim it as my own. Granted, animals can't buy houses or take out mortgages but if bulldozing is all it takes then I'm going to be claiming a looot of land.

ok to rectify some points here a 'bear' will eat almost anything! a polar bear is strictly carniverous (ever seen a berry bush in the artic) and eats other carniverous animals (for same reason), it wont give a damn what u are or what u taste like (chemical rubbish) your a meal and on the tundra you take what you can get (sorry to be so blunt).
the only thing that will stop a bear normally is finding something unknown, if it can help it (not cornered, V hungry ect) it wont come close (the exception is if it gets inquizitive which i belive is what happend here? and is the rare occation when a bear will be a problem). its at this point the other factors come into play.
the reason the bear is killed after such an incounter is that it now knows humans are panzies, and may NOW activly hunt us. - Nulla Curas |
