Edited by: isk4trade on 06/08/2011 09:56:18 CCP CEO Hilmar states in a Press Release that in DUST, RWM = advanced gear = Eve empires being toppled.
Excerpts below directly from the CCP Press Release which you can find here in its entirety ... http://www.ccpgames.com/en/public-relations/press-releases/ccp's-revolutionary-persistent-shooter-dust-514-to-premiere-exclusively-on-sony-playstation-3.aspx
__________
...
"When we set out to build a true persistent shooter for consoles, it was evident that Sony's dedication to providing a flexible and MMO-friendly platform --alongside a robust virtual goods business model-- made the PlayStation 3 the natural home for DUST 514," said Hilmar Veigar PTtursson, CEO of CCP. "CCP's ambition is to bring a level of truly meaningful, persistent gameplay to the PlayStation 3 never before seen."
...
"The actions of ground troops and orbiting attack fleets are tightly interwoven, with the real time actions of players in one game directly affecting the other. A single bullet fired on the planet below can pivot the balance of power in EVE Online. Every action has consequences, and every reaction has the potential to topple empires."
...
"In a departure from the traditional subscription or one-time purchase model, DUST 514 will be supported by revenues from the in-game sale of virtual goods, allowing players to purchase advanced weaponry, battle gear and vehicles using both earned virtual currency and real money from their PlayStation wallet."
...
"Players in EVE Online and DUST 514 share a realistic, player-driven economy. Every action in DUST 514 has real consequences that ripple across a persistent universe spanning thousands of star systems. In DUST 514, unlike in any other game, your actions can topple (Eve) empires."
...
__________
How in HELL comments like those in this Press Release are in accord with other documented comments from Helmar and gang stating that Eve will NOT be a game that one will be able to "pay to win" and proclaiming that "players will NOT be able to buy game changing items with RWM" is WAY beyond my personal powers of reason.
I guess what will happen is what will happen (the old que sera sera scenario) with the people that control the purse strings, and we will either have to do it "their way or the highway" ...
/me sighs
I simply give up trying to understand it all . . . ________________________________________________

I warned you all about the Quafe star a few months ago...
Quote: A long time ago in a server far, far away... It is a period of Internet packet war. Internet spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil CCP Empire. During the battle, gankers managed to steal secret plans to CCP's ultimate weapon, the Quafe Star, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet interaction system. Pursued by the CCP's sinister agents, Princess Neutra races home aboard her Internet starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the INTERNETS...

All I understood: "Sony and CCP both are greedy, we like screwing xbox and PC players by becoming an exclusive on a failing console that gets hacked every other week, we also like screwing our loyal EvE players by giving the balance of power in a computer MMO to a bunch of console players who may or may not give a rats ass about anything EvE related."

Yeah... go save some Retriever in your Rifter to get invited to their alliance, and turn the tide of a great war. Because we all know that really happens. ---

The EVE universe has always been a place where the increase in performance separating better modules from more basic ones, or level 5 in a skill from level 4, is (mostly) measured in tiny percentages.
If you're buying, say, special-issue Kameiras armour rather than the default Amarrian armour in DUST 514, then it's not suddenly going to turn you into a God Made Flesh against whom small-arms fire patters harmlessly like soft rain. No, it's going to give you, like, an extra midslot and 5% faster reload speed.
If somebody with the basic sniper rifle headshots you from cover two hundred yards away, you're still just as dead and your fancy, expensive armour really didn't help much.
Don't overreact. -

TL;DR. The statement is basically that you can buy ingame DUST514 items with real money from the playstation wallet. Later on he proclaims that whatever happens in DUST514 has the ability to affect the universe of EVE massively and toppling alliances.
AKA: Pay2Win from DUST514 affects gameplay in EVE.

Puffery as a legal term refers to promotional statements and claims that express subjective rather than objective views, which no "reasonable person" would take literally.[1] Puffery serves to "puff up" an exaggerated image of what is being described and is especially featured in testimonials.

Edited by: Oberine Noriepa on 06/08/2011 15:21:39 It's been known for awhile that the game will be free to play, with the exception of a low initial purchase fee. To compensate for the lack of a monthly fee, the game will feature microtransactions. This model is pretty common in free to play online games. Why are you assuming that the game is going to be pay to win automatically? It's pretty ridiculous to jump to conclusions at this point.

I've been saying for a while now that all Dust will be is a way for non EVE-ers to grief EVE-ers. If we're really lucky, Dust will fail epically, and we can all get on with our lives. Those 30 dusters that stick it out that first week will not have a significant affect on the real game, no matter how much $ they spend.

Still flying my interwab space ships. U MAD BRO?
But seriously, I doubt I will ever see this effect me and my game play in any way... EVER. It's like the guy who does absolutely nothing but pvp's and only gets enough isk a month for ships/equipment and a plex for his/her sub. Then gets upset over something someone is doing in industry. Oh wait those are high security gankers huh...

Speaking of jumping to conclusions.
We still have to pay for game time and they haven't announced yet they are going free to play.

Don't overreact.
The EVE universe never had 'gold ammo'. With DUST going live it will. Without knowing how much better the pay2win items will perform there is no way to know if we need to worry or not. However knowing CCP overreaction sure looks like a more appropriate alternative. ... Return the Old Hangar Back... for Immersion.

You're trying to argue an issue that is purely emotional by using logic. You lose.
It almost doesn't matter how insignificant the ingame RMT sales are, they will always drive away a portion of the playerbase. And it seems like most people's breaking point is where RMT items start actually affecting game mechanics. As far as I know, no gaming company has figured out how to do this in the NA/Euro market without driving away their playerbase... and I don't have much faith that it will be any different for CCP.
It'll probably be fine for the Asian market, they'll make their money there. |
