You should be able to tell only your repairing drones to be able to repair your own ship. to where its like something called "Repair Master Ship" or something like that but just a button to where itll repair your ship.

as is a common comment on these forums, oh it's this thread again.
no. drones should be thought of like how you use high slot items, they affect others, not yourself.

Edited by: Ethan Lang on 08/08/2011 00:28:07 Edited by: Ethan Lang on 08/08/2011 00:26:49 I actually agree with the OP, and have for some time. I think its pretty silly that your drones will work to save another ship, but not their own ship. Makes NO sense. Especially when I have armor repair drones in the bay, yet still have to dock and pay to repair my passive armor tank.
The change would be far from game breaking. And might actually help some ships who currently suffer from fitting issues.

oh god, passive drakes with self-repairing shield bots.
we're all doomed.

Hardly. Yes they'd be gaining some defense, but they'd be giving up offense. In fact they'd be sacrificing more dps then they'd be gaining in rep.
This holds true for any ship. Not just annoying Drakes.

Two words : "Rogue Drones"
seriously, half the time i'm using armour bots, I worry they'll go rogue and tear my corpies apart rather than rep them...
seriously though, the maintenance drones have even ****tier targeting systems than combat drones. They need their host ship to give them the telemetry and commands of *which* ship to repair... (and if we're gonna make a 'lore' example, they need you to tell them where the damage is on the other ship)
Since you can't target yourself, you can't give the drones the information they need in order to repair the damage. =========================

I don't care about 'lore'. I do however care about common sense. How is it that a race advanced enough to ply the stars can't seem to figure out how to program a repair drone to save its own ship? I know I'm not alone in the feeling of initial shock when, as a new player, I found out you can't repair yourself with your own goddam drones.
As far as I can tell, its not a balance issue. It would really only effect extremely small engagements, and even then you are giving up more dps than you are gaining in rep. To me, it feels less like an intentional restriction, and more like a game flaw.

Further more, they don't even have to add another command or "button" as the OP says. Just replace their default idle with repairing their own ship. If they don't have any other commands, or are given the return and orbit command, they are orbiting and repping their owner.

I think its a balance issue, not a lack of idea.

Not sure how. It takes a lot of drones to equal one rep mod. And unlike rep mods, drones can be destroyed. Quite easily.
You are also giving up a good chunk of damage, (and in some cases the ability to damage smaller ships)in exchange for a small amount of rep.
At best you are doubling the amount of rep drones on a single target in a 2v2. And that's only if both ships are running full rep drones. Its effect only gets more and more diminished as the scale of the engagement goes up.

Yeah you give up damage output and yeah drones can be destroyed, but the reps from the drones doesn't cost you any cap and if they're orbiting your ship they can be recalled instantly.
The damage loss is made up for by decreasing the need on your capacitor, allowing you to stay in the fight longer.

Sentry drone increase your damage output by a significant amount over any other drone, especially against another battleship.
The can also require no ammo, and can be recalled instantly as well.
So how is this any different?

Like Hellbound said, combat drones increase your damage for free, reducing your cap and ammo need and making it so you DON'T need to stay in the fight longer. How is that different?
Its not even a 50/50 trade. The damage output of 125 bandwidth worth of combat drones is much higher than the rep of 125 bandwidth worth of logistics drones.
Again, feels less like an intentional balance and more like an oversight.

We currently do this exact same thing with the modules we use.
I can fit my bs with a massive shield perma tank, but i'd be trading dps to do so.
You can also trade tank for dps. It's basically up to the players.
So why couldn't it be the same?
You're essentially trading all your drone dps for drone tank.

I would just like to point out that repair drones are destructible.

Sentry drone ... can be recalled instantly as well.
Sentry drones love to slowly wander away from their deployed spot in space. It's not uncommon to spend time flying around to gather them up.

The range of pilots in EVE is from very low sec to high sec and from unkindly pirat to friendly miner/hauler. Some never use drones, others are adicted to drones. Whoever uses drones has usually only a handful and should freely decide what to do with it. I do not have to educate anybody what kind of drones are available in the market. So we are talking about plain functionality here. It would be one additional and a very nice function, if a pilot who uses repair-drones would be able to self-repair his ship. From me - support to hyperkiller2's wish.
