*cough*
- Callous unconcern for the feelings of others and lack of the capacity for empathy.
- Markedly prone to blame others or to offer plausible rationalizations for the behavior bringing the subject into conflict.
(You'll note, I could care less whether Eve Online is a game for sociopaths or not, but at least I have the common courtesy to admit that many of the things people do within the game are things they wouldn't do outside out of fear of retribution (and not just because "it's just a game, and I'm really a happy go lucky nice person IRL".) |

Well the emoraging bear that threatens to kill you and your family because you blew up his drake in null sec is a sociopath by the second meaning you posted there.
But the fact that I/we laugh at the person for having an emotional melt down about losing an imaginary internet spaceship in an MMO about PVPing in imaginary, internet spaceships makes US the sociopaths? Yeah, ok. got it.
Sorry, I think I will reserve my empathy for things like, you know, real loss that people experience that is genuine.
The fact that someone gets upset at something doesn't necessarily mean that they have experienced real loss deserved of my empathy - sorry.
A lot of time (all of the time in this example) it is due entirely because the person at the other end of the cord is incapable of mature, rational thought process due to living a sheltered life where they are used to getting everything they have ever wanted, almost always, provided to them entirely by someone else.
Sorry, but I have no empathy or sympathy for that particular psychosis.
In fact, me blowing up their imaginary, internet spaceship is providing them with some counselling. I am quite possibly the first person they have encountered in their lives that has told them ônoö in so many words.
IÆm just using my 1400 T2 arty to do it.
If that makes me a sociopath in your books then so be it, I just donÆt care as you are probably a member of this vile underclass of society.
The fact that you may feel entitled means nothing to me.

I don't agree there. If you enjoy being an ass in game, the only thing that prevents you from being an ass IRL is that there will be severe repercussions to being an ass IRL.
Don't get me wrong, blow up all the Hulks you want because that's part of the game. But people targetting newbies specifically are losers IRL as much as they are in-game. Just my 0.02 ISK.
Lulz lulz lulz
I'm really enjoying all of this . Who knew this gank would get so much attention ? Now, its really not my fault that of all the prey that flees the area, only one sticks around to figure out an orange thrasher closing in on them is no good . Seems the loser in this situation was the semi afk pilot who didn't gtfo . Guess what though? Hes not the only one , got another retriever yesterday. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only suicide ganker either. Say what you will, it won't stop me or any other eve "terrorist" from sneaking up on a target when they least expect it . You mad bro?

i started out as a carebearminer, never been ganked for atleast 3-4 months.
Leave the mining belt if:
1. You get targetted 2. non-miningbarge jump in the belt 3. Never AFK-mine 4. Never EVER get provoked by ninjasalvagers/ninjalooters/can flippers. 5. Always be aligned to a station 6. Use shieldhardners and extenders 7. And if you can, stay in belts where COncordship are roaming
Those rules helped me :)

I'e never done anything in EVE that I wouldn't do with the person I did it to right next to me.

You're quoting the wrong person, I'm not the one that suicide ganked in a Retriever. I agree that pirating is a part of EVE. I just don't agree with pirates who specifically target newbies who claim they are really nice IRL, I simply don't believe that :) . |

This is silly. If blowing someone up in a game about blowing people up makes a person a sociopath than (pulls number out of hat) 90% of all video games need to be outlawed immediatly.
Eve is a game about players shooting each other with space ships. Uh... ya... nuff said.

to the op Eve would be very boring indeed if your ship wasnt always at potential risk--losing a ship hurts
You made fairly basic mistakes but this is how you learn-
Eve may indeed not be for you -this game is hard and the learning curve steep
But remember we were all new once --and we all had to learn and adapt usually as a result of our mistakes--indeed this process never stops

EVE is a totally peaceful game when you want it to be. Most of the wannabe PVPers who pick on easy targets are as thick as pig **** and are easy to avoid.

My two isk worth.
EVE Online is a PvP game with PvE wrapped around it for starters. The wrapping is to prepare you for the reality that eventually you are going to get ganked. It's not a shield to protect you though.
The best kind of defense from my own experience since I started in February:
a) be aware of your environment and always align to the station during mining. On the subject of mining, do not AFK mine. I've been able to escape four gank attempts simply because I watch the overview. To this day, I've never been successfully ganked.
b) don't rush to get the latest shiny thing. You make yourself more of a target and leave yourself a smaller wallet amount. You're less likely to get ganked if you are flying crap though you can still get ganked.
c) the game ads did not lie. You really can do what you want, and fill whatever niche you can. Just remember that other people can do that as well, and that niche to fill may involve taking your stuff.
d) if you do lose anything, just shrug it off. It can be replaced. Your pride isn't as easily replaced if you lose it in local and make an arse of yourself.
Give the game more time and listen to the other suggestions in this thread. It does help.

The funny thing is the biggest (largely silent) majority of players live and play in high sec and are PvE players.

Happened to me on Day 6 or so. Out in my Wreathe doing some AFK mining, thinking how cool eve was, I can even make dinner while playing ...and then I heard the familiar sound of an alarm telling me my armor was melting and hull was not far behind. By the time I made it back from the kitchen I was floating in my capsule in space...best thing that could have happened to me, cause it made me want to figure out how to not let it happen again! The pirate who popped me was actually rather friendly, and messaged me...he actually taught me a thing or two and suggested I join Eve Univ...of which we was a grad.
Dying is part of living...even in Eve. I just finished a year+ in STO; couldn't die, ship just kept respawning...after a while it's kind of boring. The stakes are higher here in Eve.
While I don't PvP in Eve yet I hope to eventually, after I know the game better, right now I'm enjoying learning about the Eve Universe - mining, PVE, and reading and asking questions.
Eve seems to me to be alot like the real world, you can't necessairly change the way people behave, and you may not agree with how they behave, but you can stay out of their way, or (once you have enough skills and really cool weapons) BLOW 'EM UP...yea or diplomacy too.
Have insurance, at least a Beta medclone, and keep your over view open...that's what I've learned in 10 days!

Actually ... you did just participate in PVP ... as can anyone at any time.
