Surprised this question is still up.
CCP was looking at an upcoming refinancing of their loan. In order to get more agreeable terms they needed an increase in revenue (or future revenue) on the books.
So first they give us the new character customizer and eventually make it mandatory. Next they play up the Incarna "expansion" as the next great step in eve. Boom- NEX store and no option of getting around it (except for an unattractive door.)
WHY you still ask?
By making character customization mandatory we are all put into the dress up game like it or not.
Why the forced CQ and Door for the heretics? Because many people would not even bother with it (judging by the many posts on the subject.) That would mean less MTs.
SO- Force the CQ so that the amount of time spent looking at your character would eventually make you interested in "pimping your ride." For those who don't care or don't want to get into EvE dress-up, you are punished by an unattractive door- which will (they hope) eventually make you switch back to CQ mode and by extension into NEX mode.
The reason CQ is forced is to manipulate you into buying new pixels for your dolly. The reason you get the door is so you will hate it and join dress-up EVE and eventually spend money on pixels. Brilliant move giving away free arium. Same principle as "the first hit is free kids"
So to sum up- Incarna is a delivery system for NEX, first and foremost, not an expansion. The timing was a business move (which is why it is buggy and technically unfit. Like when it fries your computer) not because it was ready.
There is your answer.

The one big flaw in their plan is that almost no one wants to, or can, run CQ.

I personally find the door more intimately involving than CQ or ship spinning.
Best idea ever.

If you can't run CQ buy a new GFX card that wasn't made before the year 2006(the year pixel shader 3 for DX9.0c was implemented).

I keep hearing this B.S. but something tells me the 97% of the EVE community that stares at the door mostly have nicer computers than this, myself included.

My Toshiba Qosmio runs CQ pretty good. It's just that there is no reason to.

Pretty much. I'm leaving it off until 1) they put in decent lights, and 2) it has a purpose beyond "look at us, we're adding new content".

Don't buy ATi since CCP obviously doesn't test or optimize for their hardware like they do for nvidia.
CQ stresses my ATI 5850 (900core/1150mem) as hard as Crysis, even while standing still..
And to top it off, it still manages to look 10 times crappier.
Hell, I think I got better frame rates in Furmark lol

I'm sort of fine with the door. I mean if I had a better computer I would just run the CQ because I like the idea of it in theory. And I have to admit that the door was really jarring at first and felt really weird. But now I am used to it and don't care. When I am in station I am going through cargo holds or hangars, managing my PI planets or talking to agents. I'll kind of miss the door when they do finally force us into the stations. Everything else (including ship spinning) is a big distraction.

The only thing I miss about the spinning interface is the simple double click to open the cargo hold ( yes I know there is a hot-key but i liked the flow of clicks instead of the dis-immersion (my word) of glancing at my keyboard and ctr-c or whatever it is. Could have made the ship in the background click-able but that would take our eyes off the dollies I suspect (he says snarkily) (my word again I think).

Thanks a lot. To me this explained quite a lot in CCPs recent behavior. What they gonna do when instead of increased revenue it will turn out decreased revenue. Call next expansion "Back to starships" add real content and fix bugs probably. Or rename EVE Online into SIMS Online.
