I fly a maelstrom and I wondering whether it's theoretically possible to just simply snipe lvl 4s from 150k+ away? And if it is I don't understand why more people don't do it? For low SP characters shield tanking is usually a problem so would a solution to this be to just drop tank and gear the BS towards extremely long range? There are obviously some missions where frigs sensor dampen etc but for the majority of them I can't see why this wouldn't work..

Short: Yes you can snipe L4 missions, but not all of them.
For example, the Damsel in Distress and Gone Berserk have no gate=> You can warp 100kms out, align to a celestial object and start sniping. Even with a small dps output, you can just fly away from them to maintain as much distance as possible.
But don't forget to pack light drones to use as a picket line against enemy frigates (especially webbers and warp scramblers).
Other missions however, like Worlds Collide or Vengeance, warp you within 10 kms of enemy fleets which means you need a good tank and a close range fit.
Check http://eve-survival.org/wikka.php?wakka=missionreports before flying, it will help you a lot ;)

Mhmm, and be careful on this one. The other day it warped me into Sansha pocket 2 only to get hung up on a structure.
Taking all that EM damage while being webbed by frigs and trying to get away from the structure it warped me into was no fun in a Caldari ship. With any less of a tank it could have been very ugly.
If you want to do L4s fitting a T2 tank is a must.

I tend to reposition, even in deadspace missions. Just take the auto-aggro spawn with me and run and gun. Plant my sentries when I'm in a good position where they and my horrible tracking rails can hit everything before it gets to orbit.
Its usually a small investment in suboptimal dps that allows me to bring less tank, and do greater dps for the majority of a pocket.
I usually run and gun the last few targets as I head to the next gate too, so that I'm not flying in empty pockets too much.

It is doable, but will take awhile. I prefer ACs on my Maelstrom as I am impatient...

I snipe all level 4 missions when I'm in a (Navy) Raven. The NPC can't lob stuff further than about 90 km, so I hang at 105 km. When the room is half-clear, I head for the gate so that I arrive at it just as I pop the last NPC.
The only time I need to tank anything is when I get agro from the group at the warp-in point. When I warp in, I immediately move to range dragging the initial group with me.
I find just an afterburner allows my slow battleship to outrun everything except Angels. Just make sure to nail all the webbers first.
EWAR doesn't come into play, as NPC just yellow-box you until they get into turret range, so you can nuke them long before they get close enough.
