Hi, so I'm preparing to start up a corporation and I have decided to give out a small package during the eventual recruitment drive when it first goes up. I'm going to give out a mining frigate, fully loaded and ready to kill some rocks to the new recruit, and I am going to do so for free (because thats how big a tool I am, don't worry I know). I'm just having trouble deciding on a build for what I'm going to hand out.
Requirements for the build. All the items can be produced from blueprints. They can be used by someone FRESH out of the tutorial with little or no training. And its cheap to build.
Been scouring for parts and I'm just at a loss, my first idea was a Tormentor (I'm Ammarr and I already have a BPO), with two mining I lasers, and thats about all I got. I considered throwing in a mining drone (since it can hold one), but that requires training and I want to keep that to a minimum. At a complete loss for Mid slots, and low slots I'm debating about Expanded Cargo Hold, but can't think of anything else that would be worth it.
Any ideas on a tormentor build? How about other races, I'm not familiar with their ships...
Thanks in advance -Mr. Gb -Fetch me another plaything this one seems to be broken. |

Hi,
For caldari use the Bantam Gallente use the Navitas and for minmatar use the burst
Fit as many mining lasers in high and probably cargo expanders in low. mid could be a Survey Scanner I and civilian shield boosters
Just about everyone should be able to use all that.

Edited by: Velicitia on 12/08/2011 13:21:21 Racial Mining Frigate (Navi/Punisher/Bantam/Burst) all essentially have the same fitting capabilities (give or take, EFT this to check).
[Navitas, Miner] Mining Laser Upgrade I Expanded Cargohold I
[empty med slot] [empty med slot]
Miner I Miner I
[empty rig slot] [empty rig slot] [empty rig slot]
This fits with Electronics 4 and Mining Laser Upgrades 1 on the Navi. 18.6 CPU to spare, so can *MAYBE* fit a shield booster or something if the toon has higher Mining Laser Upgrade skills.
Everything is able to be built via BP.
Edit --> I'm assuming you have a dedicated hauler and/or Orca to hold the mined loot. If not, then swap the MLU I for another cargohold.

This guy has the right idea. Also, throw in a Survey Scanner I in one of the mids.

I think the fit was too tight for it, because of the MLU. It's been a long time since I've bothered with the survey scanner (usually just warp to a belt, then proceed to vacuum up the whole thing).
Anyway, dropping the MLU for a cargohold will drop your yield a touch (base skills is about 200m3 per min), but it will allow people to fit their own scanners. I'd vote throw the scanner on the hauler (you are using a hauler, right?) and not bother with the scanner on the individual ships. If they're mining alone, they're going to take a while to eat a rock (even a small one) ... =========================

The frigate hull should be based on whatever Empire you're sitting in currently. No?
Any new player fresh from the NPE should be able to fly the above ship, except for the mining drone... which can easily be trained. If you're looking for a bit of added value and expense, give them T2 cargos in the low and T1 cargo rigs. The training time for the T2 cargo expanders is damned short, and you don't need skills to fly a pre-rigged ship.

I'm glad your thinking of new players, but if they do the tutorials they get a free mining frigate. The tutorials also have them build one and provides a 5 run BPC copy.

Well I just went through the mining tutorials and I managed to miss it, my buddy did the same thing. And the BPC they give you is for one run, not five. We can both confirm it, he did Caldari and I did Amarr. Maybe the other two are different, I dont know. You have to remember the tutorial is in need of repair as it is easy to skip past parts of it, and I mean large parts. Plus theres all sorts of people out there that hate reading... Maybe I'm a pessimist but I'm preparing for the worst case Newbs here.
And yes I have a dedicated hauler, its just a Bestower with four cargo expander I's, but its capacity is over 10k, which isn't that bad it think. Even with 20 newbs doing 200m3 a minute and two minute run time i still have 2k m3 left over each run. But Im not on all the time, some days its only for an hour or two, sometimes its five or more. Depends on what the schedule looks like. So i dont want to give them a build thats nearly dependant on a dedicated hauler taking their rocks away.
But these builds look good to me so thank you everyone your all awesome, hopefully I'll mine with ya at some point in time and we can kill some rocks while pounding brewskis (or whatever space miners drink) lol. Happy hunting folks, cheers. -Fetch me another plaything this one seems to be broken. |

Ok curiosity got the better of me. I made another Amarr alt and did the Industry tutorial again, Making Mountains out of Molehills, and sure enough it game me a 5 run BPC for a Tormentor.

Edited by: Cassina Lemour on 15/08/2011 11:32:10 It's a good initiative, I would get them to do all the Career agent missions in your nearest tutorial hub, then rather than hauling it all yourself have one or more of the newbies do the hauling and you aim for gang skills to boost them and when present using probably more developed mining skills. Give them a target, if they are in frigates mine in destroyer, when they reach destroyer mine in a cruiser.
Instead of giving them a built frigate, give them BPC of their racial destroyer or cruiser, as a target to build their next ship as BYO.
Some of the meta mining lasers are cheaper than T1 and others pay off quickly with extra efficiency.
Since they will be jetcanning with a hauler there is less need for expanded cargo, so go for a mining laser upgrade and co-processor cpu upgrade as necessary. Something like the following swapping the Amplifier according to the local rats.
[Navitas, Newbie] Mining Laser Upgrade I Expanded Cargohold I / Co-Processor I
Small Shield Extender I Kinetic Deflection Amplifier I
XeCl Drilling Beam I XeCl Drilling Beam I

a 250K gift = their gone by week 2
a 2-3M destroyer and an occasional hauler should do it.
