This was brought up by CCP Prism X in the GD forum in a debate over warp to 15km.
They made the argument so here it is in condensed form. [WALL o' Text]
Originally by: CCP Prism X As has been mentioned, the reason for WTZ being introduced was the epic proliferation of WTZ bookmarks copied all over the database causing lockups on both clients and servers alike. Feel free to blame me for that as I was involved in some areas of that project and am quite used to being scolded by people I don't know. But as it stands the bookmark system is still in dire need of "refactoring" before anything like this could be reintroduced.
But the bookmark system in its current design will most likely never see any refactoring. It's not very usable nor efficient and really just breaks immersion when you think about it. We're flying FTL spaceships but said spaceships cannot communicate coordinates between themselves unless the pilots themselves exchange a 0.1m^3 physical item (that's 1m x 1m x 10cm.. I've seen less cumbersome stone tablets). Corporations cannot share BMs betweem their members which in itself causes excessive data repetition and the bookmark management itself could do with a non-business-logic programmer UI.
So after reading this yesterday I poked a bit around. I haven't completed said poking but so far I'm gathering that there is no new game design for any new bookmark system and before we have a new one the old code will not be touched as it needs to be deprecated, not refactor, as I touched on above. I'd love to make up for my part in this by solving the initial problem with a technical overhaul but for that we need a new game design. To get a new design we need resources and they are not available in the short term.
At any rate, I'm using this topic to gauge if there's any support for a new BM system and looking for ideas on how that could be used to improve your EVE experience Well, I also wanted to write a wall of text.
TLDR: Bookmarks are slow and hard to share. Being forced to use physical transactions of bookmarks is as cumbersome as lugging around stone tablets.
This is one idea I had never given much thought to but, since a programmer brought it up... Thoughts? -------------------------------------------------- This world is kill or be killed never forget it. |

Edited by: Cadrean on 14/08/2011 10:10:46 I'm not one to complain about small things, but I do agree, it gets pretty tedious to have to move, from your people places to cargo, to whatever you are storing them in, and god knows how many times you have to rinse and repeat.
Maybe something like transmitting them through messages, or a way to broadcast them to fleets, or anything like that really. I'd like to see a change in the bookmarking system for sure.

Some changes to the bookmark system would be nice.
Easier sharing, and easier management (sub folders in the folder list would be nice).

I like this idea. It'd be nice if there was a way to simply send them to people. I mean, if my laptop IRL will let me right click and e-mail files to someone across the world, why can't my ship in Eve send a set of coordinates to someone else without me having to hand them a hard-copy printout that they have to punch in by hand into their computer?

Holy fsck yes. Let us drag them to chat windows to autolink them and I'd be back to w-space in an instant.

It needs to be said: just don't use it as an excuse to bring back the "warp to 15 km if you don't have a bookmark" mechanic. That just ensures that the people entrenched in an area have a significant advantage over everyone else who hasn't been given a set of bookmarks.
The game has changed a lot since those days. There are other ways to catch people than being able to outrun them to the gate.

@ Li, this has nothing to do with warp to 15km this is solely about a horrible and obsolete UI code -------------------------------------------------- This world is kill or be killed never forget it. |

Yeah, I'm up to about 15,000 (fifteen thousand) bookmarks, and it takes me about 10 seconds to open People & Places. _____ SURVIVOR of Teskanen, fan of John Rourke. The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated |

A new and better system would be a good thing. No more stone slabs but co÷rdinates that can be exchanged, mailed, corp/alliance-shared.
However don't forget the implications to stuff like wormholes (being trapped). - Hilmar getur ekki tala= vi= ¦ig n·na, hann er a= fara ß japanska Tfskuverslun.
