o/ greetings everyone.
As you can see from the title alone, im planning something big. However, untill Minecraft hits patch 1.8 that allows for 512 blocks of height, i am stuck at planning.
My biggest problem is most likley my own stupidity, due to not being able to correctly extract a 3d model and convert it so i can build it the RIGHT way, not by measuring it by eye, but by actually building it from a plan.
Therefore i am asking for help, be it tutorials, or preferably step-by-step instructions, anything that makes it possible to take a 3d model of the Abaddon, convert it into a file that can be "voxelized" (i think thats the right word) and then opened in binvox/viewvox, or similar program that allows for "slicing" the model, to have an actual plan.
Any help will be much apprechiated.

I'm sincerly scares me. Notch is so bad of a coder I'm calling him bad! Unless I limit javas memory myself it finds it's way into the GBs of RAM.
On topic: Can't really help you. Just thought I'd express my fear for the coming update.

If you can limit it yourself, then theres no problem. (Even tho he should have set a limit by default, depending on your hardware)
And what i am trying to build is 800 by.. what.. 300 by 300 big? Dont really know the size for the Abaddon yet, as there are different numbers out there. And i dont think that one ship would bring Minecraft, or my RAM to their limit.

If that's your only complaint then it has probably nothing to do with being a "bad coder". The JVM has plenty of parameters to tweak the garbage collector(s).

Edited by: Ghaztehschmexeh on 15/08/2011 19:36:37 would a 3ds max object file be okay?
Edit: I've uploaded a .x, a .obj and a .3ds version of the model for you.
Hope this helps.

My comment wasn't really saying your project would cause RAM limits or issues. My own minecraft server had a lot of stuff in the spawn area and was fine. If I knew anything about exporting models from eve I'd see if I could get you a scale. Are you planning on actually making a design internally?

I've got a bucket full of complaints! But I mentioned the RAM thing because when the height is increased it will take up significantly more RAM unless Notch actually gets his **** together and codes this right.

Thus far i only plan to do one single layer of the outer shell for the appearance. I will use a mod to fly obviously. No plans about any kind on internal structure have been made thus far, due to it being nearly unknown, how a ship looks on the inside. I might do it at some point, however, first let's see if i can build it at all. Motivation is the biggest unknown here. If i were to get my hands on some kind of plan or layout... who knows. But as i said, that is a big "IF".

quick update from my side:
the 3DS model is great, and i was able to get it to be 780 blocks in lenght in Viewvox (Anything above just crashed).
And while im still having the problem that i have an abaddon standing on it's engines stright up, and therefore have to built it in lenght rather from bottom to top, i am sure i can work with that. And with the 1.8 minecraft update about 2 weeks away (i think) this will soon kick into full gear.
