I'm curious because when dealing with guns, you can manually fly and play around with the transversal velocity to either increase or decrease the dps output of the guns.
Is there anything like that which does the same for missiles, because I'm looking to develop personal tactics vs missile boats. I know explosion velocity plays a role in the dps based on how fast you are going, but that doesn't effect missile dps the way transversal can with guns.
Thoughts?

Go fast, be small.
That is all.
(the formula is such that you take less damage if you go faster than explosion velocity of the missile, and if your sig radius is smaller than the explosion radius) _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |

Hmm didnt know about the size of the sig radius effecting the dps.
That's too bad that there isn't any dynamic system to counter missiles. It would make drake blobs less effective xD.

Actually, unless that was changed recently, smartbomb can destroy incoming missiles. You just need to time them really really really well. _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |

Edited by: MN Norse on 18/08/2011 21:35:27 Missile Damage = Base_Damage * MIN(MIN(sig/Er,1) , (Ev/Er * sig/vel)^(log(drf) / log(5.5)) ) Formula
The two big factors (that you control) to reduce incoming missile damage are your sig radius and your velocity. A tiny fast frig will take next to no damage from a torp but will (probably) take full damage from rockets.
As far as thoughts, just make sure you don't stop moving, doesn't matter which direction just keep moving. Missiles have a limited range, once they reach their limit they disappear and do no damage. You can try and stay out of their range but that only works if they have short range missiles (rocket/ham/torp).
Now as far as the next suggestion, which I have never tried and should theoretically work well, are defenders. They shoot down incoming missiles, although many question their efficacy, I'd at least do some research into them. Is this pvp or pve?

Know what would be funny? Highs filled with defender missiles. THAT would be funny.

it'd be absolutely hilarious as your defenders scrap off less than 1% of the total dps being sent your way and you still die in a scourge fueled funeral pyre

Also note that in the formula, whichever of the factors that has the most effect is the one that will reduce damage. So if you're in a frigate sitting still, its your signature radius. On the other hand, if you're going fast enough, even with a MWD running giving you a 5x sig radius the damage will still be severely reduced.
This is why most battleships take max damage vs torpedoes. T1 torps have an explosion radius about the same as a BS, and the max unbonused velocity of a BS is nearly the same as the explosion velocity of torps.
Be aware that when you orbit, your maximum speed will drop if you are too close in. Try it on a can or something and watch your velocity meter.
