You're about to enter a system you want to gather some intel on for pew-pew perhaps, or maybe you suspect bots are active there and want to determine a good place to stage a gank, whatever your reasons are are yours alone. You flip a switch ordering your ship to run silent. Your transponders are deactivated, cutting your ship off, communications-wise, from the rest of the universe. Your chats go blank... you no longer appear in any chat, nor can you see anyone else in any chats. You can no longer broadcast, nor can you even be in a fleet. You cannot provide warp to information. You warp into the next system, gate's clear. You have no idea who's in there, and they have no idea you've arrived. DScan shows a couple ships, so you quickly warp off to a planet and activate the covops. You're not there. Now it's time to gather your intel. (Note: activation/deactivation timer on silent mode prevents instantly popping it, fleeting, warp to.)

Remove local as an intel tool. Stop making bad AFK cloaking threads. ~~~

I did read it, removing local as intel tool removes the point of your suggestion.

Running silent is an interesting idea sure, but the way you describe it makes the ship useless.

Actually, Bask, I agree with that, but it doesn't seem as likely to happen. Local's a crutch it would do good for everyone to learn to walk without. However, this idea could, perhaps, be a step in the right direction I think...

I don't think it is a particularly bad idea. So long as it was restricted to very specific ships such as Black Ops and Covert Ops. This frankly has nothing to do with AFK anything. Should be a module.
Would this be useable while cloaked and using probes? NO BOOBIES LEFT BEHIND! |

This.
I read your post OP, it had nothing to do with AFK cloaking or fixing it.
Also, what good is silent mode for intel gathering when you define it as cutting you off from all methods of intel gathering and communication?

You can dscan, you can probe. You just can't use the chat windows to see who's there or be seen in them.

Someone AFK cloaking is only a problem if you let them be. Use DScan. Stay at your computer while running ops. Use a buddy. You have the guys name... Google his arse, see if he blogs. We had a stealth bomber in our wormhole, I caught his name during a failed attempt on my mighty bestower. Google turned up a blog, got plenty of intel needed to determine his hours online, etc. He left a few days later empty handed.
They're only a problem if you do nothing and let them be a problem. We don't need new gimmicks, new modules, nerfs, buffs, fuels... just brains and balls.

Not being able to broadcast would make sense, not being able to receive would be silly.
Also, as an AFK cloaker, I am flattered to have several threads on the subject on the front page. Thank you.
I cannot wait to see whatever system CCP comes up with to replace the current "local" as intel.
I am fairly confident it will provide moar tears than now. . Adapt and overcome or become a monkey on an evolution poster.

Love it. Really love it.
I also like the thought that you could power down ships so they don't show up in the hud - all systems offline. You could tuck a few ships in an asteroid belt and hope you don't get spotted .. then when they've settled, you power up (with timer) and attack.
