I don't consider myself an avid EVE Online player, but I loved it enough to have stuck with it for the past two years (Well, about six months, total, of playing time with a break in between two three-month periods) because it was, essentially, my Sci-Fi "fix."
I'm quitting because I was scammed. Big time, by an unnamed player claiming to be a part of an unnamed corporation that was "interested" in recruiting me. It seemed legitimate enough - he was a part of the corporation, they had a registration website, and an application process. I was a bit wary, at first, because I didn't want to give a large amount of my ISK as a "Security Deposit," but I wanted to be a part of a corporation to help me in this game, and this guy had - in his profile - that he was a part of one large corporation, that was a part of an even larger alliance.
I told you that story to tell you this - about several months ago, a friend of mine was quitting the game, and so gave me whatever he had left before deleting both of his characters and unsubscribing. I spent most of what he had, and had about 227 million ISK remaining (He gave me a lot, and I had a decent amount just from doing missions and working the market). Now, I asked in the Recruitment chat about a potential corporation that would be willing to take a 10 million SP pilot that wanted to try out PvP - and lo and behold, I get said person from said large corporation asking me to join his. I go through the process, which asked for a security deposit of 150 million ISK. I was a bit wary, at first, because I didn't want to part with my money - but the guy seemed legitimate enough, so I paid him the 150 million ISK and contracted many of my ships (Two Wolf Assault Ships - one for PvE and the other for PvP - a Hyperion Battleship, a Drake Cruiser, and a Gallente T3 Strategic Cruiser. I only had a Tristran remaining for travel.) and he assured me that after this process, I would get transport to the station and I would be contacted again to join.
That was about a month ago. I never heard back from him again, and even though he was a member of the corporation I wanted to join, they later pointed out to me while I was "petitioning" in their channel that I was scammed out of everything I had. I had 70 million ISK to my name, and I lost all of my important ships.
I know what you're going to say, and I don't want to hear it. I was an idiot for believing it, but it drove me right off of the edge. I unsubscribed just a few minutes ago, furious that everything I worked hard on (maybe not so much) was lost. Maybe I'll come back sometime in the future and be smarter about who I interact with, but for now I'm done. Scamming may be a legitimate gameplay mechanic, but because it's happened to me in a big way I just don't feel the desire to be on EVE, anymore. -----

Ok I want to ask you something now and dont get mad. If someone phones you up and asks for your name, national insurance number and bank account details are you going to give it to them? If the answer is yes, then you deserve to loose your Identity and your money. Same goes with Eve, its not the games fault its your own faillings to know that most people in the world just want to screw you over.
Bashing over with.
But dont let this event colour your preception of the average Eve player. There are many who are ok and will actualy help you. I have been in your posistion where I have lost everything I own to a gate camp and been down to flying a reaper with no isk. I learned from my mistake and become a better player for it.

Sounds like Goonwaffle or whatever....
Did you even bother to research this corp before handing over your ISK and ships?
To be honest, nobody cares, people get scammed all the time in Eve, its part of what makes Eve different from the other MMOs. This is one of the ways a player gets 'experience' in eve... not killing 1000 Orcs or turning in 30 Goblin teeth.... its learning from your experiences in the game to become a better player!
You have two choices:
Learn, become a better player.
Cry, quit, whatever.
Good luck in whatever you do, if you move to a different game I hope you find one that suits your playstyle and that you are happy with.
Fly safe.... --- Jint Hikaru - Miner / Salvager / Explorer / SpaceBum I can tell you that this is one of the moments when we look at what those at CCP will do and less of what they say. |

Since you have unsubed, this is for all the other people that will look at this post (and either bathe in the delicious tears, or facepalm)
If it is too good to be true - then it is and you should walk away.
If you are asked to part with cash (real or on-line) ALWAYS question it - then walk away
If you are giving your ships to a third party - use a courier contract with collateral requirement.
Experience is made up of many mistakes. If you lose cash, look on it as a payment for your naivety and carelessness and move on.

Seriously dude.. I feel for you but that was just blatently a scam and very naive of you. Rather than quitting I would chop it down to a lesson learned the hard way. Would you give someone your car keys and the cash in your bank account that you barely know in real life?
This example should be sticked in the new citizens forum or something.
The golden rule of Eve is simple, don't EVER give ANYONE ANYTHING for ANY service... period unless you have firm confirmation and built up a relationship with that person and know with 100% assurance that you can trust them.
Personally I love Eve for its uncanny ability to include mechanics that allow me to be a criminal. Stealing from people, killing them etc.. But these sort of "chat channel" scams and stuff like that I find to be a bit out of the realm of good gameplay. I mean if your running a mining operation and a cloaked ship comes into the systems, pulls up to you and than has all his fleet buddies jump in on you stealing your stuff and possibily poping you.. to me thats gameplay. Its their operation vs. your operation. Both players have ways to defend themselves and their is clear mechanics and tactics involved that make the encounter interesting. Sure you can get screwed but at least its within the realm of the games gameplay.
Scamming a guy out of ISK and ships through a chat channel.. to me this should be petitionable. Its just very unsportsmen like.

but with your play habbits you don't sound as hooked as I am to the game, so good luck to you... |

Posting on the forum while still enraged is never a good idea.
Making mistakes just happens. Not too bad if you learn from it. You lost quite a bit but nothing you can't work up to in a reasonable amount of time.
Unsubscribing is a decision you could easily revert and taking a break might help you to think about if Eve is really your thing.
Posting enraged on the Forum however is something you can't revert. You have that mark on your character for as long as it exists. And generally people don't care that much about everyones quitting story. |

Kurama Bingyi I hope you haven't quit yet.
I have played since 2003 in different forms and have seen it all.
I would like to offer you a life line to stay and show to you that good does exist within EvE. I would be willing to help you a great deal if only you get in touch with me in game. I play London GMT time.
Please come and listen to what I have to say before you go.

Hand over all that cash and your ships - WTF were you thinking, OP?
I completely agree with everything that has been said about the OP's naivety...but it does amaze me that the people who are telling him to GTFO because of the way he allowed himself to be scammed, would never have the balls to do anything like this in RL and would simply delete an email from a RL scammer (anyone want to help a Nigerian prince move money out of the country lol?).
Double standards becuase they can hide behind internet pixels?

You must have seen the signpost that says "Don't trust anyone"?
Isn't this in the tutorial?
I'm sorry you're quitting EVE, but you know, you can exact revenge on people in this game and there are more than enough ways to get back at someone.
CCP understand that for there to be a game mechanic that allows scamming, there must be an equal or greater game mechanic for getting your own back. If it was a one way street, it wouldn't be fair - but they want you to get your revenge, don't you see?

Though far from unique, a wonderful story, that I'm sure amused us all greatly. Thank you. It's somewhat weird though, that you could play EVE for so long without discovering the harshness this game so boasts of.
