Last night, myself and two other members of BDCI (Latex & Erilynn) attended the Nightwish concert in Stuttgart, Germany. I've been to a lot of concerts where I've been less than impressed by the live performance. Nightwish was something that I had trouble believing could live up to the amazing sound of the studio recorded CD's. OH. MY. GOD! Was I ever wrong.
The crowd clocked in at just over 10,000 people, completely packing the small stadium. The opening band was Tristania (I'm probably spelling it wrong). The music wasn't bad, and they had a female vocalist as well. It just all sounded the same to me, especially when the lead male singer would start singing what sounded a lot like Bevis & Butthead:
"IÆD LIKE TWO TACOÆS PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE!!! AND AN ORDER OF FRIEeeessssà. TO GOOOOooooooà.."
I'm sure they were singing about something with a lot of meaning, and the female lead singer was pretty sexy doing all of the standard death metal head banging (I think her head almost popped off at one point) but it got kinda dull after about 45 minutes. It was a good show, but I think 90% of the guys in the audience could have taken the stage and sung the "Taco" lyrics.
At long last, it was over. I had stated to my friends that I wanted to hear certain songs mainly because I was curious as to how the live performance stacked up to the CDà.
The lights finally went down and a thunderous overture began to play as smoke filled the arena. Then, all the sound stopped and ôOnce I had a dreamà.and this is it.ö whispered teasingly through the hall. Suddenly, ôDark Chest of Wondersö crashed over the crowd in a wave of light and sound. When Tarja literally floated to the forefront, belting out the opening lyrics, I doubt I was the only fan that was mesmerized. I absolutely could not believe that she was singing live at first.
As the last notes of the opener vibrated through the hall, the crowd had no chance to catch their breath as "Planet Hell" sprang to life with rising choral shouts and pounding drums. MarcoÆs roaring vocals raged through a cacophony of terror and turmoil as the keyboards and orchestra ran a desperate race to outdo each other. By the time the first two songs had ended, I almost could have walked out satisfied.
The next couple songs went by with a blur until suddenly, the opening violins of "The Siren" began to play and the crowd went absolutely nuts. It was at this point I realized that anyone who considers Nightwish to be a pop band needs to see the band live. This was rock n' roll, pure and simple.
Next came disbelief as the unmistakable opening measures of ôPhantom of the Operaö burst forth from the stage. "Disbelief" because they don't play it in concert that much from what I understand. Marco and Tarja sparred dramatically back and forth throughout this one from the play by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The fact that Tarja continued to hit and hold the vocal notes of the song was amazing.
After about six songs, Tarja left the stage to the guys and they played up an awesome rendition of a Pink Floyd song, "High Hopes". VERY cool.
Then came the moment it seemed the entire crowd had been waiting for (me especially) as the vocal choir began the opening sequence of "Bless the Child". For a few moments, I could not even hear the music as the cheering reached a deafening crescendo that was finally put down by one of the many giant displays of flame and pyrotechnics that continued to turn night into day.
After a few more songs, the band announced their final number and the piano tones of "Nemo" began to play. It was a fantastic closer to the show, but I could not help but feel slightly unfulfilled as the one song I wanted to hear, "Sleeping Sun", had not been played. As the concert 'finished' and the lights started to come up, suddenly everything went dark againà and guess what song started to play?!
The live rendition of "Sleeping Sun" completely destroys any studio recording. Tarja handled the vocals differently and hits slightly different notes that take the song to another level entirely.
Then, the FINAL song began to play as the entire ten minute long version of "Ghost Love Score" was performed. Waterfalls continued to pour from above the stage between the crowd and the band and laser lights drew snowflakes and different shapes through the smoke and falling water. An avalanche of red and white confetti showered the entire standing crowd as the song reached it's climatic end.
And yet, it still was not over!
Marco and the band spent the next five minutes on stage thanking the crowd, their crew, their management, etcà And then said they had one more song to sing, "Don't you sometimesà wishà youà hadà an Angel??" With that, "Wish I Had An Angel" closed the show with the same energy and power it began.
My love of this band started just about a year ago -

Bah. Stupid character limit cut off my post.
My love of this band started just about a year ago when I heard them for the first time by accident. I decided to use thier music in one of my first big videos, The Everlasting Vendetta Contract. I then used them again for what is still arguably my most popular vid, The Merchant Marine Contract.
Nightwish in the EVE community got a HUGE boost though when Myal Terego of Teddybears used "Fallen Sun" for his amazing The Fallen video.
More recently, I went back and used "Century Child" for my most recent vid, The Dawn of Exodus.
This band is so unique in sound and I'm happy I could go see them live. I can't wait for their next CD and the concert was one of the best I've seen in a long time. -

I don't much like Nightwish after their having converted to some sort of country band with a nu-metal twist, but some of their old songs are still okay (i.e. Wishmaster, Tenth Man Down etc). I don't know. I used to listen to them a lot but I sort of "outgrew it".
(I actually like Tristania more. ;P)

Nightwish do indeed rock. When I first heard Planet Hell on an internet broadcast station I was bowled over and bought "Once" not long after. It still stuns me that heavy riffing and operatic vocals go hand in hand so wonderfully.
Glad you enjoyed it Seleene.

Saw them in london on the 21st :D
They were great as ever (seen them before), but Tristana were rubbish. The female singer looked like she was there just to fit in with the genre and spent half the time touching herself up on stage :S
They did Ghost Love Score :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Well, for one thing, "noob"? Do you have any clue how long Nightwish has been around?
As for metal, I've never really thought of Nightwish as anything more than 'hard rock', which is most definetly is. The majority of the music on the CD's is far from easy-listening and when they perform live? No way can you see this band live and consider them boring.

Trying to dig out the new stuff now, you make it sound better than the old stuff i got hooked on last year when eve redio played it around last christmas.
Absolute class, there rock, i love the voice, the way they bash it all together, and they sound very 80's.....
I dunno, to me the best common rock since metalica.
I realy have to keep my eyes open, id known they were coming to the uk, id have been there. ------------------------

I may have got the date wrong, whichever was the 2nd one in the Astoria. Now that you mention it, 19th sounds right.
I was almost the last on in and by the time nightwish came on I was almost at the front

i thought they we ok, until i did some research into them.
they have extreme satanic lyrics or are Christian and may have subliminals (wud explain strange lyrics)
i mean take the song, "the Carpenter" for example; it is blatently about Jesus "Man condemned to shine a salvation throughout the centuries", "The one crucified to the chirping of birds" Now here "The one they lick The same old sick dream of their precious saviour
Kiss them deep and
make them weep over promises of eternal peace"
is it me or are they calling people to make Christians cry?
there is lots of refrences to Satan: "Beneath the Great Eye" "Dancing with the spirit of the air"
i believe they are satanic, NOT christian, because they are from europe (lol) "Nor enlightened by lessons of Christ" and other things.
=)
all this was gatherd and concluded by the 1st 5 songs on thier 1st album. im sure thier is a whole lot more. and yes, the strange lyrics might be because they are foriegn.

While i like Nightwish, i completely disagree with your comments on Tristania
It's an amazing band, just with a completely different musical style, that's all
Let's just put it that way: Nightwish are heavy metal opera Tristania are melodic black opera
anyway, just wanted to defend a good band ------------------- :: finite horizon :: killboard ::

Sorry, Vex, if I offended you. Actually, my friends and I all commented that the actualy music was rather nice. It's just that when the lead male vocalist started screaming into the mic.... yikes! -
