I keep hearing that you need a ton of skill points to make the typhoon really shine , I'm just not sure what it shines at? I really think the old agate "jack of all trades master of none " holds true . Can someone please give me a fit that's good in a given(any) situation?

Nano shield phoon makes a great roaming BS given that it will out run just about any BC and some cruisers

I don't have a fit for it, but from my experience, the Typhoon is, as you mentioned, a jack of all trades, but i disagree with your master of none opinion. with half decent skills in missile, projectile and drones, a typhoon could in fact be a master of all. think of it as a very ****ed up T3...

Supposing max skills, a Phoon is actually one of the best gank and tank BS out there for its cost.
It is especially good for station games, with torps L guns and a big buffer tank make it neutproof. Best of the tier 1 BS at that job anyway and arguably better than most tier 2 BS for that kind of fight (0 range, BS vs BS DPS/Buffer slugfest).

[Typhoon, Gank]
5x Siege Missile Launcher II (Caldari Navy Mjolnir Torpedo) 3x 800mm Repeating Artillery II (Republic Fleet EMP L)
2x Large Shield Extender II 2x Invulnerability Field II
3x Ballistic Control System II 2x Gyrostabilizer II Co-Processor II Damage Control II
3x Large Core Defence Field Extender I
5x Ogre II
Pushes out 1,400 dps (1,600 with heat) with 103k EHP
You can drop a LSE for the meta 4 100mn micro if you have a 2% CPU implant, losing about 15k EHP.
IIRC it has the best DPS of any tech 1 battleship

It's skillpoint intensive because in order to shine you need excellent skills in drone, gun, missile and shield/armour tanking.
However once you do get skilled up, it's the highest DPS subcapital. 1400dps before overheating or T2 ammo isn't sloppy.

even disregarding the (paper) dps, it can become quite a good utility battleship in any gang, be it roaming nano or RR. ---

i run 5x cruise missile II's, 2x small 280mm arties, large arup ecm burst II, cap booster, tp, omnidirectional tracking link LARII, MARII, EANM, kinetic thermal and explosive hardner, dcuII
4x GardeI sw-900
In tandem with a nurse/sentry domi in a C3 WR. Most righteous setup. The MAR is on there coz when i did a reinstall i accidentally overloaded my entire low rack to death. It should be a lar II but i just threw an extra RR on the domi.
It took a lot of skills to get it set up like that and still need sentry II's.

Idea is to use sig/speed you tank this against battleships 500m orbit with overloaded/named afterburner to find they cannot hit your ship.. of course the megathrons all they need to know is align out strightly and they will gain some tracking but its a good setup.
As for what it is good for, not much its torpedos wont attack cruisers very well and no neutralizers will hamper the deal considerably but give it a shot.

Torpedoes and pvp - I suppose if you have painting/ webbing buddies. Still it looks weird. Mostly because, when I think of pvp, I'm thinking sub BS hulls that move with high speed.

then I think you're underestimating the typhoon.
there is more than one way to deal with smaller ships, and the typhoon provides said ways. look harder ---

Enough slots to fit double web and painters, if you can't hit small stuff with that ship please don't even try blaster megathrons

I think anywhere where the engagement range is close, like a gatecamp or station undock, preferably with someone else painting.

Technically, you only need 2 smartbombs to pop a pod. The Typhoon gives you room for 3 ----------

I don't know that a fully skilled up typhoon is all that good for much. It doesn't have enough midslots for a real shield tank. The DPS output is impressive but it applies poorly to pretty much everything but other BS and Drakes. Lowsec I can see it bringing value. Elsewhere? IDK.
I think the Typhoon is not a very popular ship because it doesn't preform wonderfully. Not an awful RRBS I guess.
