Being a little interested in starting to do courier runs, question is if an orca is better recommended than a proper freighter?
From what I can see an orca is half the ISK from a freighter but as with everything not being as simple as things seem I wonder whether I should just try and train + save up to the freighter instead... I wouldnt think any corporation would risk a piece of hardware like that in the hands of a newb either... or?
Any suggestions or just pros/cons input would be greatly appreciated! |

Orca = poor man's freighter Orca pro's vs freighter - cheaper - versatile - faster - can support mining ops - can be tanked - can use drones - can be used for highsec gank warfare (as a neutral party)

Properly trained you can move +900.000M3 in a freighter.
In an Orca, 50.000M3 raw ore, 40.000M3 in the corp hangars = 13 GSC's= 50700 m3, (+) 92.000M3 cargo space = 30 GSC's = 117.000M3. So 167.700M3 in total + 50.000 ore. Add to that a 400.000M3 ship bay which can move rigged ships without having to pack them.
A freighter you use when you have to move a *lot* of stuff. You feel awkward flying around with only 1/3 of its cargobay used, because it is so goddamned slow, even with all level 5 skills. Unless you use the trick with the webifier which means you have to be with 2 peeps.
- A freighter cannot pick up stuff in space. - Cannot be rigged - Cannot move GSC's (unless packed) - Cannot assist with mining - Cannot be used as a corporate ship bay
So unless you are going to move TONS of stuff, go for an Orca first. More versatile. A freighter you can pick up later.

Freighter can too -- send courier packages. Wraps up the ship nicely . This may not last...
but yeah, the rest is spot on. =========================

Thanks for the good replies! Guess my goal will be the Orca after all then :) |

Don't forget that with the Orca you are limited to one courier package approximately 89,0005 m3 or smaller and another 40k m3 or smaller, (unless you plan on spending 25d to train Industrial Command Ships V or spend a small fortune on T2 cargo rigs, 300MIL/unit) because you cannot place a courier package in the ore or ship bays.
However, also take note of the fact that items from the Orca's corporate hangar do NOT drop from the ship when it is destroyed, ever, so you will be able to consider excessively high value courier contracts if/when you acquire any, as the Orca will guarantee at the very least, no one will gank your ship purely for the chance at said goods, as the game mechanic does not make it possible.
For instance, once in a great while when I am hauling around deadspace and faction mods in relatively high numbers (think a bil or two worth), I will use the Orca and corporate hangar, never the freighter.

If you mean courier missions then those ships are overkill. |

AFK freighter is faster than AFK Orca.
Though the Orca gets to warp speed faster, and travels in warp faster, most of the travel time is spent going from 15 km to 2.5 km approaching a gate, and freighters are significantly faster than an Orca.
When at the keyboard (ATK), the Orca is faster, especially when using a single cycle of a MWD to warp in 10 seconds.
Training for a freighter also gets you into Transports (Deep Space and Blockade Runners). Training for an Orca is similar to training for a Hulk.
