OK I realize I shouldn't have taken this mission in the first place since the agent was sending me to a .3 system. But I checked the map before I took off and no one was there at the time. So I got to the station and completed the mission but as I was leaving the station I got hammered by 2 pilots. Fortunately, I was able to barely tank the damage and re-docked. But now they are waiting for me to leave and have said for 75 mil I can go free! What are my options in this situation. I guess I could either pay the money and trust they won't kill me or wait them out until they leave. Anything else I can try to get out of this situation?

1) Pay the 75mil and HOPE that they honor it. They don't need to honor it, so it is possible that they can take your money and kill you.
Does your ship even cost 75million?
2) Play the station games of docking and undocking until they (most likely) kill you.
3) Buy a shuttle, and warp off in that. They won't be able to catch you if you align smart. Come back for your ship later.
4) Wait until they leave. You can even do this offline. Come back later and hope that the system is empty.
*add to #3* It is possible to setup a courier contract for your ship if you want someone else to try to get it out of low sec. Chances are it won't work, but it's something. Just don't forget to set collateral of the appropriate amount!

Easiest option is #4. Just log off for a few hours and wait them out. If they're in local when you log on, repeat as necessary.

Also remember this:
1. Undock 2. press ctrl-space once and ONLY ONCE, so your ship stops
you'll be untargettable for exactly 30 seconds, which is precicly how long it takes before you can redock.
Use it to peek around outside. If you press ctrl-space twice, it won't work.

#5 More entertaining solution. Leave your toon logged in at that station for hours/days and then undock after many hours or a day or two and your new friends will have left after wasting many hours of their own time waiting for you while you were at work or watching tv. Undock when local is clear or even if it isnt. It is highly unlikely that anyone is going to be patient enuff to still be sitting on the undock or even at their keyboard.

The shuttle has already been mentioned, however you can reduce the chance of getting caught on the undock by just leaving in your pod as well.
The feeling of being trapped as a newer player when the station is camped is a bad thing. You will probably feel a bit liberated and more at ease in space if you actually get out of the station again under the threat of guns.
If only for the experience, I recommend you try to break out in a shuttle or pod, or try the CTRL-SPACE idea a time or two. If your experience is like mine, you will feel much more at ease in the game when you know you can actually get out of a common bad situation like getting camped in.
Enjoy the low SP your character probably has, clones are cheap at a young age. Abuse this and you will have lots of opportunities to learn more about the game, low sec and PvP.
My 2 isk. Best of luck either way.

Unless they camp the station 23/7 it is possible to get out alive.
CTRL SPACE out of the station, look around while waiting out the session change timer (turn it on), re-dock if un-safe, otherwise warp away.
I've gotten away with a red HIC sitting on the undock. He decided not to risk the station guns.

Edited by: E man Industries on 23/08/2011 15:29:51 also what are you in?
you can wait..or if you want to run.
1) undock and ctrl space...this stops your ship. Look around and see if there is a celiestial object in front of you. Redock...
Undock and warp to said object..then to the gate.
2) Refit your ship with warp core stabs bought on the market...
3) Refit your ship with nano fibers...
4) Refit a crazy tank and try to warp away and if tackled re dock.
always use the 30 seconds to your advatage. Undocking is fairly safe in most stations because you can dock back up...just be sure to wait before moving so the 30 second timer does not mess you up.
Be warry not all station have you undock within rang of docking back up..these are called unsafe undock stations. these require you to burn back to the station before docking.
Most stations are safe though.
Hope you make it....and enjoy the tension.
With practice you can undock even if there is a 100 man fleet out there waiting for you. ______ Hello WoW players. Look at your toon, now back to me. Sadly it isn't me, but if it wasn't simplistic pre scripted linear mono dimensional game you could look like me. I'm in a Paladin |

Thanks for everyones advise. I really appreciate it. Well I decided to wait them out and logged in at 6 in the morning hoping that it was safe. One of them was still there but I figured he simply didn't log off to make it look like he was still there. So I went ahead and took the chance(barely awake at the time). When I undocked all was well and I headed for the gate. Unfortunately for me the way home was through this .4 system into a .3 system and then it was home free in all safe systems except one more .4 before I got there. He was waiting for me as I moved from the .4 to the .3. I don't even know how he got there. (Must have been following me all along) At least he didn't pod me! But now I'm in my pod with a .4 to get through before I reach home. Since I'm now in my pod is it easier to get through this .4 system? I'm really learning my lesson the hard way accepting missions that put me in this situation!

Low sec. without bubbles should be safe most of the time for Pods and shuttles.. Unless your using Autopilot
Always Warp to Zero
Edit you can also set your map to Safest.. can't see why running early missions would send you through 2 low sec systems

In my opinion this was your biggest mistake. You entered into a new situation while not fully cognitively functioning. You were already at a disadvantage due to not being familiar with the situation, and you added to your disadvantage by not being properly alert and hampering your ability to make sane and rational decisions.
Also this is the first you mentioned 2 jumps into low sec. (I think it is anyways. If you mentioned it earlier I apologize for missing it.) Had you mentioned earlier (or had I seen earlier) that it was 2 jumps I could have taught you the microwarpdrive + cloaky trick to greatly increase your chances of you getting through the 2nd system.
It sounds like you stumbled upon some people who were really bored and/or you intruded on their "territory."

Another option is to use alts/friends in a covops to scout the other side of the gate you're gonna jump to. Its also important to learn about agression mechanics, which you can use to avoid a single agressor to follow you through a gate.
A pod in low sec is pretty much uncatcheable unless when getting stuck because of session changes or because of doing stupid things like not warping to zero. ________________________ CCP: Where fixing bugs is a luxury, not an obligation. |

Zornia Estemaire,
Okay, first thing do not jump a battleship into low sec unless you have scouted the gates in a shuttle first, have spent some time in local to ascertain whether or not those neutrals are actively hostile or not, and have a good idea of your surroundings.
You did right checking the map, but verify you check the following:
☼ Pilots docked. ☼ Pilots active in space in the last thirty minutes. ☼ Ship losses in the last hour. ☼ Ship losses in last twenty four jumps.
Check these things for each system along the pipe you are attempting to travel. At the very least, it will give you a rough idea.
Back to the battleship thing, when you said you completed the mission after getting to the station am I right in assuming you were doing a courier mission for an NPC agent? If the package size was small enough to fit in a battleship, it would easily fit into one of the cruiser hulls with a larger cargo bay, which are considerably less expensive.
Also... what you were using, not a PvE fit... trimarks, not for PvE, not only that but they are useless unless you have plates fitted in your low slots because they are % based, so the less base armor points you have, the less use trimarks are.
Next, T2 Large CCCs, into low security space? You should have known this was not a good idea my friend, just saying...
IF you really wanna jump a battleship into low sec for courier missions... at least fit it for PvP, something like:
[Megathron, Cataphract] Damage Control II 1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I 1600mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Quad LiF Fueled I Booster Rockets J5 Prototype Warp Disruptor I Heavy Capacitor Booster II, Navy Cap Booster 400 Tracking Computer II, Tracking Speed
Modal Mega Neutron Particle Accelerator I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Modal Mega Neutron Particle Accelerator I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Modal Mega Neutron Particle Accelerator I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Modal Mega Neutron Particle Accelerator I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Modal Mega Neutron Particle Accelerator I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Modal Mega Neutron Particle Accelerator I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Modal Mega Neutron Particle Accelerator I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge L Medium Energy Neutralizer II
Large Trimark Armor Pump I Large Trimark Armor Pump I Large Trimark Armor Pump I
Hammerhead II x5 Warrior II x5
Costs considerably less than your build did, and might have lasted against that Proteus long enough to slowboat to the gate and jump through, thus escaping and being able to dock at a station in either system you could have come from, both of which had stations in them.
Next, he was using a blasterboat, so you could have probably neuted his cap if you had a good fit like the one above, because he would have easily been in neut range because of those medium blasters and you would have lasted long enough to cap him out, i.e. align to that empire system you were heading to, neut the hell out of him while giving him all you got with those blasters on your own boat, and spam the warp button, long as he isn't bumping you to next year and is trying to speed tank your blasters (like he would have) you will eventually cap him out and be able to warp off.
Last, it is still a bad idea to take a battleship into low sec unless you know what you're doing, ^ so in the future yes... please consider using a slightly less expensive ship for your mission running...

Really last...
Open your scanner, go to the directional scanner tab, set it for say 10,000,000km, that's 10MIL, make sure it is set to 360 degrees, also set it to use your active overview settings, and make sure those settings include player ships. When you are about to land on a gate, hit your directional. Bet you would have seen a Proteus pop up on the results, now you know there is potential danger so when you land, you hit your directional again, if you see the same proteus linked with a - for distance, that means he is somewhere offgrid at that gate under 10MIL km, that almost always means either a POS or you guessed it, he is waiting to follow you through the gate. Have POS towers set to display on your overview for this reason. See no tower, but a proteus on scan? That means he is most def sitting there waiting for you.
Next, was he on gate when you landed? Or waiting for you on the other side? If he was on gate and you tried to jump through in a panic, that was your first mistake. He was only one pilot, if you land on a gate at 0m with a hostile ship, ffs don't jump through!
In a system with no stations, attempt to warp off to a celestial cluster in space, i.e. where he would have to guess exactly which planet, belt, station, or w/e you just warped too. If he aggresses you in any way, i.e. red boxes you, jump through the gate instead, and warp off on your merry way! You will have a headstart of approx. 45 seconds on him while he waits out his aggression timer before the stargate will let him jump to pursue you.
If you jumped through and he was waiting on you, that means he probably had a cloaked alt sitting on the gate watching you jump through it, which means you have to fight, esp. in a slow battleship that is webbed and scrambled... hence the neutralizer in your high slot and the cap booster in your mids...

Edited by: Wa''roun on 24/08/2011 15:27:13 Edited by: Wa''roun on 24/08/2011 15:26:25 Regarding undocking/jumping and the session timer. Turn it on in your ESC menu somewhere. It will have a little timer that will run in the upper left of the screen so you know when you can redock/jump/change ships/etc. Once that timer disappears after jumping through a gate, you can choose to burn back to a gate to jump and it also lets you know you have another 15, or was it 30...seconds left on your cloak after jumping.
For low/null sec stations, making undock bookmarks straight out from undock several hundred km away will keep any but the fast lockers from targeting you. Doing this with a mwd t1 tackler frig (the t1 frigs that are the little versions of their t2 interceptor cousions) is best. Do this for your high sec stations you frequent as well in case of war dec, or just getting away from crowded mission/trade hubs faster.

I can only recommend joining a good player corp and leaving the NPC corp. Any half decent corp would send someone out to scout for you, then the issue is rather mute. If you join a half decent corp who PVP, they'd have used the perps willingness to engage you solo in his T3 as a trap, and you'd have gotten home safely with a Proteus on the killboard, too. ---------------

Hey Zornia....
Since ur still pretty new, stay away from lo-sec until ur not so green :) im almost 2 yrs old myself. Always set ur Destinations to avoid lo-sec. On occasion Ill do a courier run into low sec, BUT I do the upmost in all the lo-sec survival rules...but thats after at least a year of experience.....
anywaz, just chalk it up to a learning experience. never pay ransom. especially 75mil when u are so new to the game, not worth it. believe me, you will be ganked in hi sec eventually anywaz....its Eve. Ive had my share of losses, its just how we deal w them and learn from the mistakes. You'll find that sometimes those who blow ur ship up are willing to give u tips on how to improve ur chances for next time too.
Good luck

Thanks again for everyones suggestions and honest critisizm. Especially Mendolus! It is going to take a noob like me a bit of time to dijest all your excellent points and stradegy. After what you pointed out I feel like a fool for taking my Megathron to just drop something off to complete my mission. Oh well it was a lesson I learned the hard way. BTW, he was waiting for me as I came through the gate, from a .3 to a .4. After this happened I checked the kill board the next day and it appears that he and couple of his buddies hang out in that area with T3 cruisers quit a bit. Since I have only been playing for about 6 months now I don't think I will be seeking revenge for awhile. When I was stuck in the station I tried to explain to them I have no experience with PVP and was just completing a mission, but that just made them lick thier chops I think. Although I won't forget and maybe someday we'll cross paths again. I realize I can't take this personal because I did it to myself and the one thing I have learned about this game is there is all kinds characters out there and a few that just live to ruin your day. Thanks again everyone for taking the time to impart some benefical knowledge my way. Mendolus you have really opened my eyes!

Zornia Estemaire,
You are the type of player who will survive in EvE. Keep up what you're doing, and do more of it, and you'll find yourself exactly where you need to be, eventually.
You made a mistake, and rather than panic you looked for solutions.
You executed a solution, and while it didn't end up the way you wanted, you didn't get too frustrated.
You want to digest all of the information given to you while acknowledging that you are still new.
People like you are the type of people who survive in EvE. Good luck with whatever it is you do! . |

Another thing to consider to the excelent advice above is that once they shoot you they can not jump for a set period of time.
A well tanked ship may make it back to the gate you jumped through and jump back while the aggresser can not.

To everyone that scares away new people from low/null sec, there have been many new players that immediately jump into these areas. Edited by: Taedrin on 25/08/2011 19:08:59 Easiest and fastest way to escape from a low-sec station:
1) While docked, right click on your ship and select "leave ship" 2) Undock in your pod 3) Warp to gate at 0km - pods enter warp virtually instantly. Also, ships CAN NOT activate smartbombs within the range of the undock ramp. 4) While in warp, right click on the gate on your overview (or in space) and select "Add as first waypoint" 5) Activate your autopilot
There are TWO dangers that you need to consider if you choose this method:
1: Pods don't always land within jump distance of the gate - your autopilot will have to fly some 100-300m before you jump through. 2: While ships can not activate smartbombs close to the station, they CAN activate smartbombs on/near stargates. Mind you, people don't use smartbombs very often, but they are the most dangerous weapon to a pod. ----------
