you move into your new cubical. First day. Feeling a bit nervous you do the only thing that comes natural. Unpack your box of personal stuff moving into your new desk. Everything is setup and after one last adjustment to your still in the original package "Telescoping Lightsaber" Darth Vader figurine, you attend your first meeting.

I make local an optional feature where people either connect to it or don't just like every other channel in low/null sec. |

*** wrote:snip due to ISD posting right before I hit the post button*** More like people who assumed the thread was about a feature or game mechanic change instead of the dev put in charge of doing something that is hotly debated.
But thanks for your constructive input friend!

I ask why they gave this job to someone on their first day of work, then i stop trolling and give them my idea.
Make scanner beacons, one per system that form a network when in adjacent systems they would basically act like local when turned on in system with one added benefit. Every 15 seconds they would send a "snapshot" through the gate to all the other beacons adjacent to them this effect would be cumulative meaning that (assuming that there was a beacon in every system) you could open the map and see how many people were in the systems one jump away 15 seconds ago, you could see the same information delayed by 30 seconds 2 jumps away etc etc
Ships could also relay this information, and ships that are supposed to scout would have a greater "sight radius" but you could not relay the information while cloaked, and relaying the information lowers your sensor strength to 1 making you really easy to probe down.
Now for the down side. These modules can be destroyed and can be hacked. When hacking, a ship must remain within range of the beacon (30 km or whatever) and activate its "communication network disruption" module. It would then count down 20 seconds. the module would keep the sensor beacon "blind" for as long as the module was active and the ship using it was in range.
This means that a large fleet could essentially hide their numbers by moving slowly and sending one ship in front to hack the beacon of the system youre moving into, and leave one ship hacking the beacon of the system youre currently in. |

I consider everything I've seen and read here on these forums regarding the subject briefly, then I toss that out the window as it will get me nowhere, and ultimately, I have been told to remove local.
After blanking my mind of all the incessant wheedling of the forumites, I get to work on my great idea. What is it you ask? Well, that'll have to wait until I've got a solid idea rolling, and then I'll post it up here for all of you to see and criticize. After that, I'll get to work on something workable.
Isn't that what Devs do? Maybe I was actually sleeping in front of my computer and dreamed I posted. Certainly, it's not there now. |

One more thing I'd add,
Having done all that, I'd also throw in a button, (probably up by the System, Constellation, and Route data), so you could turn 'local' Comms off or on.
I'd then add Inter-Ship Comms, so that ships that are in local proximity to each other could transfer to a channel with the flip of a switch, (so to speak), and communicate with some degree of privacy, rather than broadcasting to everyone.
So for 'Proximity Local' on, you'd have a little green dot, which would default to blue when near other ships in space, and with a click, turn red, when you want to close Comms.
When docking at a Station, you could also then choose to listen to the local chatter or not. That means that, unless you wanted to, you wouldn't have to listen, (figuratively speaking), to all the spam and chatter that goes on.
You wouldn't believe how many times I've tried to close local. Maybe I was actually sleeping in front of my computer and dreamed I posted. Certainly, it's not there now. |
