Ive been going around in games I play to see how many people remember what BBSes were back in the day. Terminal an all that lol -------- CCP knows better than the players whats good for their game. SOE knew what was best for SWG too. Better than all those players that left too. This is your NGE/CU moment CCP. |

I remember them well. Along with having Warcraft or Doom matches broken by people calling on the phone.
Sometimes i miss the old 386 i had back then. It had a turbo button.

There was a AT command prefix that you could use to turn off call waiting.
And for the people who don't know what a BBS is, imagine a web server that only allowed one person to view the "web site" at a time and the graphics were all in colored ASCII characters. And your upload/download speeds were measured in kilobits (thousands) or less, instead of megabits (millions.)

Or to put it more simple you had a download rate of 5min/mb (14,4k) and phone bills were so high that it was cheaper to download the whole BBS and read it off line.

Our parents often wouldn't allow us use it, because back then phone calls were srs bsns.

Plus, back then nobody had cell phones, so the land line was all there was. ______________________________________________________ PVP is a question that has no one right answer but a lot of wrong ones. - Aelana Anais

Ahh, the days of surfing the Boards with my 2400bps modem. Logging into Prodigy to check my email and stay connected with friends. The endless screeching noises as my modem constantly dropped and reconnected because of the lack of good phone lines.

lol, I remember that... the manual for my PC had an awesome description of it. Something like "Push the turbo button, and the machine switches frequency from 16MHz, to a blistering 33MHz..."

My first PC (8086 ...) also had a turbo button (from DOS actually not a button) but I never used it because it made space quest I unplayable (graphics got blurred or something).

Gosh yes, trying to find one in local calling distance from home was something. Yes he days of the first dial up modem. Now, that is going back some. I think that mine was plugged into the back of my QL or, rather, into my network of QLs.

Man I scammed Prodigy and AOL hardcore back then. All you needed was an AOL disk (which were everywhere!) and a credit card number generator like CreditMaster and you were good for 30 of free trial until they tried to charge the card.
I remember Prodigy used to charge you per email. I think you got like 30 a month or something and after that you had to pay. Some friends and I figured out that returned mails didn't count against the 30 a month so we set up fake accounts where we all had the username and password and would send emails to phoney addresses so they would be returned. Then we could all log in and read the returned emails in the mailbox.
We must have cheated those companies out of thousands and thousands of dollars.

We did it the sensible way - copied the key to the room they locked the modem in in school for the BBC B's.
Lunchtimes skulked up to the only tech room with a phone socket, got the modem and plugged it into the BBC we'd prepped earlier - got on the BBS and left it all afternoon downloading crazy stuff, like line drawn **** and hilarious tard stuff like that.

I saw BBS and thought of those stupidly expensive wheels everyone fitted to their VW's and BMW's back in the 90's, or am I on my own with this one?

Glad I'm not alone. And they are still used heavily now :P I just bought a set now I'm broke.
But the other BBS usage did bring back lots of memories of some good times. ----

I remember that as well back when I was using 2k4 and then later 9k6 modems.
I only ever used BBS for files though, never for chat/messaging.

Heh, try the 300 Baud acoustic coupler that my dad had attached to a TRS-80 IV. That didn't last very long though, since a 'traditional' 1200 box came out not too long after (which was needed after the cat chewed the cable in half).
Sadly, I did not do much with BBSes. I tried some early 'UNIX shell' sites that required a dial-in, but didn't like them much.
Really started on AOL, it had its charm back then (won a contest on the Sightings page - which was a bit of a double-edged sword). Took half an hour to close that account. Moved to ATT Worldnet until that closed back in '09 I think (I kept it for years as a stable webmail source - I now have my own site/domain so that became moot).
