The best solution for inactive accounts is renaming his chars in the form: userID_char{1,2,3}

As long as you use a first and last names the number of possible names is staggering.
Pretty much only real life peoples name or complete names from fictional works would be deny you from something with a similar attitude or sound to it.
Now that they allow you a 3rd name ... you have that much more lattitude.
We could play a game here, and it could be fun (well for those willing to overlook the trolling posts or those impatient and expecting to get the right answer in the first 20 responses.
Bring up any name you wish you could have, and I bet within 20 suggestions, people would give you a suggestion that duplicates the name with minor spelling tweeks , or better, having heard what you want, come up with an alternative that is both untaken, and perhaps even suits you better than the first.
Let us have it.. give us a few you wish you could get?

Edited by: Sadayiel on 29/08/2011 07:07:27 Nah let's be serious if CCP can afford to keep the names of the chars on inactive accounts for as long as they wish then let's them do it and live with it.
On the other hand i think those trial accounts that never become a full active account should be deleted after 1-2 years of inactivity, this should leave some free names and i strongly doubt much ppl would complain about that.

Its not going to happen.
Even biomassed characters can be recovered - I know of one case where the guy got the character back after 6 years. So nobody would know whether the character was the original player or not. It will be a hideous mess and its quite unneccesary assuming even a glimmer of imagination - which its obvious the OP doesn't have.
You may have a case with trial accounts but once a character has been subbed, the name stays with that character forever. Even when the character is biomassed.

I was surprised that my name wasn't taken. Since 2003-2011. I can see the obvious reasons why people would stay away from my name. Then again, I don't consider myself to be pompous or really live up to it. So when it comes down to it. "you make a name for yourself!" Plus having names already taken isn't so bad. It adds to the uniqueness and diversity we now have today.

Define "good name". If by that you actually mean "clichTd names with minimal relevance to the setting" or "names of actual famous people, real or fictional", then, yeah, totally... Sigh
Quote: Imagine EVE in 10 years. New players can only use 1337 names or names like citicen12345678990
You can have up to three names for your EVE avatar, and the third one just opened up rather recently. There are SEVERAL THOUSANDS of English names in frequent enough use, plus several thousand rather common names in many different other languages, plus quite a few thousands of words that could be used as name components easily. The permutations of just those English names should number in the millions, include the other words and you're looking at billions of unique names... before even thinking about touching numbers and weird symbols.
I was actually having trouble accidentally coming across an already taken name while not even trying to be too original, and I've made quite a few trial accounts before activating this one (and this name is not even very original either, but what do you know, it wasn't taken in 2006 yet) plus quite a few one-shot alts. And hey, guess what, I actually theme-named most of them based on what I was going to be doing with them. I was quite shocked quite a few times that almost none of those names were ever taken. Apparently, my barely-attempted tries at originality consistently beat YOUR somewhat more serious attempts at originality... or... wait... you were trying to be original, weren't you ? Nah, you probably were not. You were looking for a "cool, recognizable name", right ? Pfft. Freaking wannabe.
I'd say that says a whole lot more about you and your cheap tastes and lack of an ample enough internal reference pool than it does say about... well, just about anything else, really. Get some more experience, and flex your originality muscles already.
TL;DR - There will be more than plenty "good names" available for decades to come (if EVE survives that long).

Edited by: Stormhammer Investments on 29/08/2011 10:56:45 It is probably for some statistical reason the marketing bods can use. Did you know there are 10 thousand variants of "Legolas" playing? Well, registered anyway. Still, come all Rings fans, come play Eve!
