So, on the character creation screen it allows us to choose a name and a family name. Is our family name a last name? Is it displayed with our name? Or, if we want our last names displayed, do we need to put them in with our names?
Thank you.

In EVE names don't have any inherent meaning. Non of the server or client code is taking any spaces into account. In fact a space has the same meaning then any other character. -- IF YOU PLAY WITH SONY YOU PLAY WITH ******! |

I am sitting on the last part of the character creation screen right now. I don't want to lose the model I worked over an hour to create. If someone has an open character slot, could you do me a *big* favor and create a character real quick and see if the family name shows up as a last name when you get into the game? Or do you have to put the last name into the 'name' slot?

As far as i know it goes <first box> <second box>
First box can have a space. Second box cannot. If you would type "Ban Anna" into the first box and "Choco" into the second, your name should appear as "Ban Anna Choco".
I am talking from my memory here, so perhaps wait for a confirmation? Or run a second client and try making an alt on it real quick. _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |

I guess I am going to wait for someone to help me out real quick. I created this character on this acct. as a trial before they added this family name stuff, and had no idea it was in there until I was in too deep to log out. Hopefully I don't get booted before someone checks for me :P

The "family name" simply adds a 3rd word to your name, because the standard name box only permits one space. It is a regular part of your name in every other way, and your name is displayed as a 3 word name rather than a 2 word name if you add anything in that box. --- ISD IonCharge Lt. Commander ISD STAR |

Nevermind.
I pinched my little nose and took the plunge. You were right, Foksey -- that is how the names appear to work. Thank you so much for the help.
Nobody has to go and blow a character slot for 24 hours -- crisis averted! Thank you!

It's just a gimmick, as IonCharge says the main idea is to allow people to have two spaces in their names. The first and last names just get concatenated to make your character name.
Even if I create a character with the first name "Abdiel" and the last name "Kavash", I won't be able to create another with the first name "Abdiel Kavash" and the last name empty. The character name would be "Abdiel Kavash" in either case, and duplicates aren't allowed. ---

I recently created this character and was pondering the same thing. Finally left 'Family name' blank and put everything into the name field.
I was then running the basic tutorial missions and found the Agent was talking to me like this:
"Welcome back Alexis Cornell..."
The point is I think the 'Family name' portion does more than just add a second space. It allows agents to talk to you in a less formal manner, assuming that if I'd entered my name across the two boxes I would have got the following:
"Welcome back Alexis...

You wouldn't have. As above, the "family name" is just a hack to allow a second space in a name.
