I've got an alt cooking away who's going to be sitting in a Basi/Guard for Incursions. She's also an Orca hauler/booster on the side but don't judge her for it.
My question is, once I've got her to Logi 5 et al does it make sense to start training towards Command Ships to provide a more 'booster' role, even on a passive level? I've seen fits for command Tengus/Legions but do they compare to the purpose build boats?
Also ideally she'd make for a good L4 pal so is it best to move closer to pew pew or AFK boosts?
Thanks in advance!

if you run incursions boosters are used offgrid and do not get any payment
usually a booster is an alt from someone in the fleet
as for ships t3 give a bigger bonus but if you fit a command ship right you can use up to 7 links at the same time giving a lot of bonuses
so unless you have a second account to use together with the booster it's not profitable

àalso, a command-T3 was a much better idea before they tweaked the probing mechanics and made it impossible to create unprobable ships.
Since the command processors and gang links required for a proper T3 command booster ate all your fitting space anyway, there was little reason not to also make it a cloaky, bubble-ignoring, unprobable (and probe-bonused, just to annoy people even more) command ship. These days, you can still have three out of four, but it was that fourth one that really made it such a sweet deal.
As a result, normal command ships have clawed back some of their usefulness because they can be made into boosting monsters much more easily since their entire purpose is to do exactly that. Yes, a T3 can still provide slightly better bonuses (and will do so with less skill training), but they're limited in what they can do, and they've lost that combo-function edge they had before the probing changes. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡ you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki

They're still effectively unprobable, you pretty much need perfect skills and virtue implants to probe one down now, and you'll have to get your probes placed JUST right.

Is being probed down a significant enough risk? If I get antsy can't I just warp my alt into the mission with me? I'm more looking for bang for buck with the minimum amount of work (aren't we all?). The Command Ship seems to be a sensible choice but if a Command Legion gives me more for my lack of effort then I presume I'd train into that.

As far as the command ship vs t3 argument, if you have somewhere safe to sit the booster (like a POS), though it doesn't really matter for highsec boosting, as they aren't great suicide gank targets, the T3 is better. I have a booster alt that is currently sitting in a tengu with mindlink for shield and a fit that has the 3 shield and 3 additional boosters available. Usually I stick the 3 skirmish warfare ones there, though that is more due to my lazyness than any overriding factor. This tengu gives 10% extra boost over a similarly skilled vulture with the shield links, 25% extra over sitting in an orca/any other booster. It works great for boosting shield fleets in incursions, providing about a 50% increase in overall tanking ability for everyone in the fleet (whether that is an incursion fleet or me ffing off in missions). It also works great for boosting me from my POS in WH space. It does not however work all that well when invading other WH's, due to the minor matter of no where to safely hide, and it can't accompany the fleet in sites. This is where sticking it with just the 3 links, and stuffing the character into a vulture on site with us would be helpful (also if you do lowsec incursions).
As for the idea about moving her to a lvl 4 pal, a booster would allow you to skimp on tank even more, but not really do anything for your gank. Moving over to using a logi ship in site would allow you to ignore tank altogether (a lvl 5 basi with 2 cap transfer coming to it would be perfectly capable of running 4 RR and a selftank), allowing you to up your gank some without upping your effort too much. But best would be another DPS ship in mission (unless you already have 2 chars in the mission you are actively piloting anyway) would be best to improve mission running time.
So a TDLR:
T3 is better when: you are in highsec you have a safe POS to boost out of
Command ship is better when: The booster is coming on grid you need more than 6 links off 1 character the booster has to be able to survive some damage before you can come rescue him

Seems like Command Legion/Tengu is the way to go then since I'll be almost exclusively highsec for the foreseeable future. I can get the lazy boosts when I want or can warp the alt in for some extra boom boom.
Time to set some plans and make some ISK! o7

Since you're interested, I just put together a trio of gang link T3s designed for incursions. You can find them here:
No, I don't have any idea what the first responder to the Tengu thread was smoking. Your guess is as good as mine.

Edited by: Amrin on 01/09/2011 02:55:26 Eeeeexcellent! Those fits are exactly what I was after, was dreading having to trawl through either Bclinic or bumble my way through the subsystems myself. Cheers!

The weird thing is, I couldn't find any there. Or at least, not of any quality. If they were there, I blame battleclinic's new layout for my inability to find them.
In particular, the Tengu fit is interesting, since the magnetic infusion bay lets you avoid using rigs for extra powergrid. I've never seen that subsystem used for anything else.
Legion fit was pretty boring. The TTN and AO give you enough CPU to online a hull repairer, but it obviously shouldn't be necessary. I just wish I could have done something more interesting with it. 6 link legions are simply too expensive to be viable.
The Loki fitting didn't get very favorable reviews, but I honestly feel it's the most important one there because of how much 20km webs improve your fleet composition. Unfortunately, it's also the only one that requires an implant or faction modules. I blame the offensive subsystems.

Mmmm I agree, BClinic for me is sifting through the hundreds of mostly ill-fit pew pew clones until I find what I'm looking for or I do it myself. If anything they should at least cull the negatively reviewed fits so searching is easier. /shrug
Since I'm going to be running in an Abaddon and eventually a Nightmare the Legion and Tengu are first on the cards. After plugging those into EFT I can see how tight and limited boosters can be! The Tengu sc****s in on PG and CPU with everything at 5. Such a shame you can't get more creative with the spare slots on the Legion/Loki but what you've got there would do in a pinch. Nicely done!

Well, the Loki has two high slots and the Legion has one. If fitting weren't a concern, what would you have me add there?

Sorry, that was far from me criticising. The 'you' was referring more to everyone as it's such a tight fit with limited options that you can't get creative with what you fit. Lost in translation it seems

This. If your T3 was unprobeable before, it's still pretty much safe now. A prober who is able to find you is putting much more on the line than you are in your T3.
