Hey everyone, I am starting a life of crime today and would appreciate any tips, links or advice. I have teamed up with 2 friends to explore the darker side of eve. We are all 3 new players.
Thanks in advance.

Unfortuneatly for you advice won't be helpful without specifics. Strategies for successful piracy/low sec pvp are extremely dependent on
-What ships you can fly -Your source of income/the income you have now -What ships people are flying around you -Whether or not you plan to ransom -Whether or not you plan to do high sec ganking -Your experience in PvP -How much you want to work in a group vs working solo
slight variances between any and all of these topics will result in vastly different responses

Thanks for the reply Karl,
As I stated in my post we are all new players. Currently we are flying Rifters. Ransoming definitely interests us. We are thinking of flying around low sec but with no experience I don't know if that's a good idea. May flip a can or two in high sec. to get our feet wet.
I came here looking for a place to start. It seems from all the Merc posts, Eve could use a few more bad guys.

Edited by: The Bear08 on 30/08/2011 18:29:28 Dear Iron-Sam Vane,
Congratulations on choosing an interesting career path, I applaud you for being ambitious from the off as opposed to grinding missions.
I assume you are going to be flying frigate and cruiser hulls for the forseeable period until you've trained your core skills up to Battlecruiser standard. From my experience of lowsec you may find it difficult to find viable targets with these ships because you can't really engage on gates due to the sentry guns and thus you will have to either shoot at outlaws that will most probably be in stronger ship classes, or find people in belts and the like. Do not read this and decide to stay away from lowsec because it has some of the best PVP in the game and is not to be missed, but read plenty of PVP guides and try and learn which ships you believe you can defeat as a trio. In lowsec be wary of obvious bait which will result in you being BBQ'd. It's not always easy to see whats bait and what isn't but ships like Drakes and Mallers which are sat in belts are most likely bait ships designed top lure you in before a larger fleet arrives.
Be prepared to lose loads of rifters initially because they are very cheap and you will learn to PVP if you use them regularly. A classic rifter fit is the 200m plate with a repper as can be seen here: Bleeder Rifter Fit Tech 1 until you have the skills/isk to fit Tech 2.
I would consider starting in highsec by flipping cans and having some remote repair in the same system to assist you should the enemy choose to engage. You'll get lots of rage tears by doing this and also some pretty good kill mails. The trick is to make the person think you are alone and then warp the RR in once they have engaged you and are tackled. Ships useful for RR are the Exequror (Gallente) for armor tanks and the Osprey (Caldari) for shield tanks.
I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me in game for any advice and I'll see if I can help you.

Sir:
The advise by the gentlemen above will only part you from your hard-earned ISK. Do not go their way.
If you want to make ISK through crime, you should join a player corp and empty their coffers and hangars. Especially highsec carebears are unbelievably dumb in their trustworthiness. The other way of making ISK through crime is scamming people.
Do not try to make money by buying a fukton of Rifters and by losing them. You know where that road takes you, don't you.

Yeah, but the rifter thing is more fun.
Joining carebears to scam them involves pretending to be dumb and be a carebear too, and that's a lot like a self-imposed lobotomy. Intentionally forgetting what you already know about in the game doesn't teach you anything new, its just a challenge not to screw up and accidently look too smart for your own good. Plus, these guys ARE new - they won't have the knowledge to pull this one off.
Scamming is just dull - sure there's the challenge of outwitting the witless, or pulling off a good con-game on the unwary or ignorant, but again, it takes more knowledge of the game than the newbies probably have.
No dear friends, join the game of internet spaceships wars by learning to fly and buy and sell and kill like the rest of us. Get out there and just do it - THEN come back with your get-rich-quick schemes to bilk the masses. :) |

These responses are exactly what I was hoping for. I don't think we are ready to pull any elaborate scams as of yet since we barely know how to play ourselves, but I will keep that in mind for future ventures.
Thank you The Bear08 for the extremely informative post. The Rifter you linked was exactly what I needed. Would you mind explaining what you mean by remote repair in system?
For now I think, we shall try our hand a can flipping and trying to extract some tasty tears and maybe a little Isk too.
I just thought of one more question. Lets say I flip a can and the owner attacks me. If my friends show up and help me out they will get in trouble with concorde, right?

But he was right. Shooting stuff in lowsec is not nearly as profitable. More fun perhaps, but that'd debatable and depending on what your interests and appeal take you.
Otherwise, if you're three guys and new, stick to Rifters and learn to dscan properly as you'll engage purely in belts. Flipping cans is not "piracy", it's more 'taking out the garbage' (that needs to learn EVE mechanics), worth it only for possibly tears. But it takes massive time and effort, usually best coupled with some manipulation (hint; if you're good at ****ing people off, you will be alot more successful at canflipping as well). -

There is no proper way to become an asshat.
You just become one. How you do it is totally up to you. Making ISK of it makes it even better. ------------------------------------------------ I'm not a Pirate... I'm a Terrorist. |

Other alternatives include wardeccing fellow newbie corps and mission invasion.
You could always join a corp or alliance that teaches basic frigate PvP, then drop out after a month or so to do your own thing.
Try a bit of everything.
When you practice against each other in corp, fight to the death to get used to losing ships. It's only a Rifter afterall and fighting into structure wont teach you anything IMHO.
When I first started I had a hangar full of disposable rifters scattered around the place. Just die and jump back in like an FPS shooter.
Personally, I think that can flipping in empire will get you up to speed on the basics. People moan about can flipping but it's a great place to start with basic PvP IMHO. You'll get hatemails too!
IMHO, if you are all minnie aim for Rupture then Hurricane. With these ships you can sustain cheap PvP indefinitely.
Good luck and I hope you get the "bug".

Piracy is fun they tell me and I'm sure it is. If you decide to go a step or two into the darker side, take a look at our web site.
Oh, and I've got that famous 18 page "Piracy Guide" on the site in recruitment forum. Can't remember the author's name at moment.
Good luck either way.
