Before proceeding to take any level four mining missions, I want to make sure I am not setting myself up for losses of ship and equipment. What are/is the best ship(s) setup(s) for level four mining missions? Can one effectively solo these missions?

EVE-Survival: Mission Reports: Mining There only seem to be nine or so L4 mining missions, so get to reading!

easiest way would be hulk + t1 strips and a flight of medium drones.
covetor with T1 strips and lights might do it... but you'll have to watch your shields more closely... =========================

I've run quite a few mining missions. They are actually the most fun missions in the game. You not only have mining objectives but combat as well.
Know how to control drone aggro, have proper combat skills so you can tank your ship properly.
Kudos on missions that most folks simply say "that sucks" towards. Granted, i don't want to grind them daily, but they are truly fun and teeth gnashingly suspenseful sometimes.

tl;dr: ------ If you are in a dedicated mining vessel with a moderate tank you will have no problems surviving L4 mining missions except when dealing with player gankers and griefers. Hauling is the only PvE issue for a solo L4 miner. The payoff is low compared to Security missions.
The full text: -------------- I have been doing L4 mining missions in a 0.7 system to upgrade my R&D agent access and reduce my trading fees. All the ones I have seen are trivial to solo in appropriate mining vessels, in terms of the risk from the mission spawns and ability to complete the mission within the bonus timer. The biggest problem for true soloing is the amount of material you need to harvest, as you will be forced to choose between the risks of jetcan mining or repeatedly slowboating it to the mission objectives. Having a hauler alt is a big help if you are in a busier system and have to worry about getting flipped or robbed.
For L4s you will see an assortment of ore, ice, and gas mining missions. I usually use the appropriate bonused t2 mining ships: - Hulk for ore mining - Mackinaw for ice mining and for gas harvesting I use a Battlecruiser for the extra turrets to use more gas harvesters.
All of my ships are permatanked but several are poorly fit with whatever random items I had on hand (e.g. a Civilian Shield Booster on the Mack). Most of it is not even t2. In my 0.7 the largest spawn outside of one particular mission is 3 frigates, which is trivial to tank even on the failfit Mackinaw.
There is only one mission for which tanking is much of an issue, which is one with a drone hive. As far as I can tell the drones spawn in on a timer, and leaving them to plink at me leads to multiple spawns and I do end up needing to kill them. My t2 light drones can handle all of the drones spawns easily, although I do have a lot of SP dedicated to drones so someone who has just barely squeezed into their first barge might find the cruisers more of a challenge. Otherwise I typically leave the spawns alone and just mine through them. If you are in Caldari/Gurista space you may run into jamming rats, which you might prefer to kill rather than tank.
I would think that a t1 barge should have no problems either, although you might need a proper tank rather than a random assortment of "good enough" modules due to the lower base stats and resists. Even a Retriever ought to be able to complete these missions within the (usually generous) bonus time, but it will definitely be a lot slower than in a larger vessel.
For most missions I find that there is between 40k-48k m3 total material to gather. Ice mining is the exception, with just 20k m3 needed. Bare minimum mining time for most of these missions with near-max skills and in an ideal bonused mining ship is around 30-50 minutes if you do not have leadership bonuses or Orca support. I have not tested to see if the mission asteroid variants count as their normal kind, in which case using tech 2 strip miners would speed things up on the ore missions. Having Gas Harvesting V makes a huge difference on the gas missions, so if you do not have that yet then I would recommend it.

Edited by: Meirra Dalekki on 31/08/2011 21:21:53 Since you are not going to be able to fit that much cargo space in any high-throughput mining ship you need to figure out how you want to haul it if you are truly soloing. In most cases the mining target is a relatively short distance away (20-30km), so if you choose to return to the station when you fill your hold you will be able to do reasonably quick turnarounds. However one ore mission objective is at around 50km distance so you do have some distance to traverse. If you do not have a hauler alt, then you might try taking a sufficient number of GSCs to the mission in a (lightly-tanked) industrial, anchor them, and then return in your mining ship. While a bit of a nuisance it would be much better than failing your mission due to ore thievery, or lots of time spent covering that 35+ km at 100ish m/s.
I will also warn you that Mining missions are not particularly lucrative compared to security missions - almost by an entire order of magnitude. The listed mission rewards are similar but mining missions lack the bounties, loot, and salvage that make up the bulk of L4 security missions' payoff. In addition mining missions are not blitzable, since every last unit of the objective has to be mined before the mission flags complete, so you cannot speed/buy your way to success. I chose to do them to limit my standings losses against other factions while I work on specific corporations, but if you are after income you may be somewhat disappointed.
Edit: It seems that Ilkahn and I have had quite different experiences. Could you elaborate on which you find exciting from a combat perspective? My agent may just be giving me boring ones, or the system security status may make a big difference. |
