n00b and Newbie are part of leet speak? Being they're not real words. They're slang like everything else in leet speak. Had a "Microsoft For Parents" guide link that had "n00b/Newbie" listed as leet speak too :P
Yes it's very annoying. It's more annoying when 30 year old adults say it while spitting on the monitor.

i use n00b, nub and newb as terms of endearment to the newer players, and as a general insult to those poeple I know have been around for a long time that aren't offended by it and know that it is said in jest. ----------- "Remember people: Omber is the biggest evil ever created, DO NOT let it get to you!" a newb could be one without any idea on something internet or computer realted
N doubt it will become part of wider people speak and get its own dictonary entry
That said ive been here for one month and feel im no longe a newb as i have read every aspect - every possible bit of info on the game i can get my hands on. Bone up so to speak

HA! Not really. Stupidity is not localized to any one nation or region. ----------- Fighting for the ideals of freespace, posthuman ethics, and rock & roll. |

newb will become the generic insult of our generation. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Newbie has been used in military slang for nearly 100 years, at least US armed forces.
n00b, or nub or whatever people are using now is just stupid leet.
BTW as long as goats are being snatched let me tell you what really runs off with mine.
ALOT
There's no f-ing word "alot" what people are trying to say is the phrase "a lot". "There are a lot of newbies" = fine sentence "There are alot of n00bs" = bullcrap

The term "newbie" was used on the popular US tv show Scrubs sometime last year, maybe the year before, and has been used repeatedly since then. If you never saw that show, it's great, I just wish I could remember when it's on so I can watch it.
The word itself does not offend me. However, I suffer some mental anguish whenever I hear the word because I know I am playing the same stupid game as this other person who takes so much pride in having wasted more time in virtual reality.
What I dislike most are the "you're an *******, no offense" comments, which I admit I occasionally find myself making as well. Either insult or don't insult, there is no middle ground that you can state opinions from without the possibility of dissension. |

Edited by: Mephorios on 24/03/2005 07:56:11 When I think 'newb' I think someone new to something who has not had the dirth of expenerience and not the knowledge base to pull from. I do use it, and not as a negative.
I use n00b or nub, when dealing in a situation where the person is obviously beyond the point of, um, newb-hood , and just branching out into apathy or a simple dumbass who should have sent their subsriction fee to me
Edit: Update my ****in' face already on the forums, CCP!

if its a new player, call him a newbie
Only time i ever use n00b or nub or sommat is when referring to someone who clearly isnt a new player, and usually only in jest aswell

Heh - this puts me in mind of the chap who stated that "The grass is greener on the other side" was invented by Travis.
The term "newbie" has been around much longer than that, well, me and my mates were using it in the early 80's anyway..
