Some hours ago, Merlin frigates got sold for almost 674k ISK p/u in Jita. A packaged Merlin is 2500 m3, so the value density is about 270 ISK per m3.
The value density for Tritanium is around 600 ISK per m3, and all the other minerals are worth more, often much more (1250 for Pyerite, 12000 for Isogen, and so forth). I expect I'll be producing stuff rather far from trade hubs, near to where I get my minerals. This means I have to haul the produced stuff to the trade hubs.
Low value density is a problem here. Up to a certain point, a low value density is desirable. It's good if I can stuff my Charon full of the items and total value is not much over 1 billion.
But a Charon full of Merlin represents a cargo value of only around 1/4 billion ISK. So I'm concerned I'll have to fly a lot of trips.
Is that the general situation, in terms of produced T1 goods? Ammo, ships, modules? That value density is about this low? Or is the Merlin an outlier in terms of value density?

Most T1 is fairly close to the value of the minerals it contains. There are exceptions. |

Obviously t1 ships (especially frigs) are going to have a poor value density. A t1 large gun is 1/25th the volume and worth more. The issue is that there is no profit to be made in most t1 mods while some t1 ships are profitable (just). The value density is irelevant it should be profit density you are looking at. |

General "value density" of the item is irrelevant as such. It only becomes relevant as soon as you can choose between certain number of items to haul, and you can sell any of them as easily as any other.
This is marginally related to mineral compression where you can choose between several item types and the reprocess them back to minerals at the destination. In that case the point is that you want to transport the minerals, for which you already have market, not the items you use for the compression. Of course even in this case there are some restrictions, do you have necessary blueprints, do you have perfect refining available at the destination station and so on.
TL;DR: "value density" of the item is irrelevant unless you have market for it in your destination. |

The vast majority of T1 ships sell for less than the minerals they were built with would have. The very few exceptions are G-14 Classified. |

Not sure if ... anyway,
'G-14 Classified' and 'do you understand the words coming out of my mouth?' are references to the movie Rush Hour |

Most people don't look hard at value density as the cost of freight is very low. People afk autopiloting their own freighters may not even factor in the cost although of course that falls into the "my time is free" fallacy.
It sounds like you need to work out your profit on the merlins and compare it with simply exporting the minerals. Unless you love making ships so much that you're happy to lose isk doing so. Value density is kinda a distraction other than to be able to say "hey look, a ton of metal weighs more in this game when it's a ship and less when it's a module, how dumb!" It is dumb but it's irrelevant to the profitability of your business. |
