what most games do wrong in my opinion is the sound of multi barrel guns. In real life, chainguns and similar have an insane firering rate. And they sound like that.

in games however they sound regular machine guns a eve-style bounty system https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=359105 You fail you fail you fail you fail you fail you fail you fail to jump because you are cloaked |

CCP Audio, I have to say im impressed with the level of feedback you are giving especially considering he subject is EVE sound.
Im anticipating the winter changes and I hope you managed to get the sounds as good as your time will allow :) "Were not elitists, were just tired of fail" - The Sorn |

i only had time for a short test over the weekend, so im sorry if missed something.
there were no new options in the sound menu. the dev blog hinted at a new soundsystem and i hoped for a few more sliders, sepparating ambiet sounds like the station chatter and the windy rouge drone ambiet from sound effects like warp, weapons and modules. would be really cool if you could ban the ambiet, well in the backround and enjoy the roaring of your weapons. atm i hve the situation where either the sound effects are right and the ambient to loud or the ambiet right and the weapons to low. and no, i have not checked the "quieter weapons" box ;)
is there anyway to get something like this into retribution? *flutters eyelashes in CCP Audio's direction* |

CCP Audio wrote:Logan LaMort wrote:I'm really liking the new audio experience, I have a nice set of headphones and the first time I heard the new warp boom and cool down sounds, I kinda shivered. Those are pretty much perfect as far as I'm concerned, although I think the "engine cool down" sound effect when you exit warp would be better if it played just before you exited warp, as an audio notification to let you know that you're just about to exit warp, rather than after you've exited warp. Overall I like the new turret sounds, although I agree with OP that some need a bit of an umph, again, the missile sounds are a great example of getting it right. Question though. Does the background ambient music change when you're in hisec, lowsec and nullsec? I noticed it seemed a lot more "Alien" when I was in null which I found rather cool. It added a lot to the ambience Thanks. The music experience is changed into an adaptive system, which changes depending on the system you are in. hi-sec. lo-sec. famous places, etc.. so you got that right :) as it is right now, you have the ability to turn on and off the jukebox, if you turn it on, the old system will take over and just behave as it used to. so no adaptive music. The warp stuff, I know exactly what you are saying, but as mentioned before, some changes are not that easy to implement. there is a cooldown sound as your warp is about to exit, but it's often very masked because of the regular warp sound and so on. this is a tweaking matter, that I assure you that I'm already working on to make "perfect". But cooldown and a general better feeling of "warping" was the point in the initial changes made. All the turrets will get heavy revision.
The adaptive system is really cool, I usually have a custom playlist on the jukebox but I had it turned off throughout my Duality testing just to hear the ambience. I'm a firm believer that audio is just as important as graphics and gameplay for immersion, so what I heard is certainly a huge improvement
Personally I've always really liked the radio type noise you hear from rats and outside of stations. I'd love to hear more variations of this, possibly also from more sources in space like populated temperate planets or custom offices and such. I always thought it would be cool to hear radio chatter from your own ship or other player ships (I noticed some ship rumblings in the last Duality build which were nice), but I don't know how many people would agree with me on that.
I've heard how some parts of EVE's engine are pretty hard to work with and to be honest, I could easily live with what was on Duality. I look forward to the tweaks though as what is already implemented is damn awesome |

no!. ;)
There have been made some changes to the overall mixing and the "default" settings of audio, to better fit what you are pointing out basically. I don't think this particular part of the new audio has been set for duality. But that might change things up a bit - a new slider option may be a bit much with this little time to go, but a better mix is definitely going down on my desk atm. Fully configurable won't happen atm. but there are some changes to the sounds of the ship being targeted and scrambled, but yet again not configurable from the user end.
I have gone over them and will do again, mainly because I thought they needed a better warning type of sound so that it was clear what was going on. Bj++rn Jacobsen | Audio Designer | EVE Online, CCP Games | Anything sound related, ask away. |

Thanks. feedback is important from both ends of the spectrum when dealing with EVE imho. As I said earlier here, to get out of the "EVE has sound" era - changes are needed, but that means so many changes that we really cannot get it all fixed in one go.

Are the various ambient pieces going to be sorted further into Amarr/Caldari/Gallente/Minmatar subsets as well? Unless this is already the case and I'm just really bad at picking them out. |

Just a thought, but whatever happened to Aura? Always thought it would be a lot more pleasant (and more fitting) for Aura to announce that "Your shields are low", "You're being warp scrambled" or even "You are being targeted" etc.
Of course that isn't feasible in the near future, but is it something you sound guys have considered? |

Yea, a change of scenery is always good. deleting posts and changing names just to create confusion is what I actually do ;) Naa. CCP Audio obviously didn't fit the overall guidelines of user DEVELOPER names on this forum, so I had to change it into something more respact-my-authoritaaaa like.

That part is thought of. but for various reasons it can't be done unfortunately, it would be an awesome and easy way to solve some of this, but this is a very heavy subject at the office at the moment, so maybe it will happen, but not anytime soon.
Aglais wrote:Are the various ambient pieces going to be sorted further into Amarr/Caldari/Gallente/Minmatar subsets as well? Unless this is already the case and I'm just really bad at picking them out.
Which ones you say? the ambience of the ship or the ambience of system and so on? Just gotta get the names right, before I start explaining something completely different .
Gilbaron wrote:Quote:Fully configurable won't happen atm. :( can you at least put these on a special slider ? they are much more important than other notifications
Yes, as mentioned earlier, a lot of mixing will happen for this expansion and that part of the job will continue onto the next, which will for sure solve some of the "problem" about which warnings are audible when and importance of such warnings. That will take care of some of it, but not special slider style. Bj++rn Jacobsen | Audio Designer | EVE Online, CCP Games | Anything sound related, ask away. |

Team Klang: Is there any interest in remastering the in-game soundtrack, or creating a new soundtrack altogether? I think remastering the current one would be nice since it sort of falls into the same philosophy as the rest of EVE's development: Basically turning the old into something new.
I emailed J+Śn Hallur not too long ago about this. He said that CCP doesn't have any plans for updating the soundtrack. I think that's rather unfortunate. |

is the whole "fully configurable" thing on the "things we will do one day" list ?
this is one of the main things that really limit my gameplay in eve. i dont care about my warp drive being active, i care much more about it being disabled. i also want to be able to chose a specific sound for it. depending on my playstyle

Oh! Speaking of Aura, what made you decide to change Aura from a dead-pan humor A.I with a on your ship to a A.I with a human british speaking lady? That's the same voice actress right? Don't get me wrong I like her al lot, but the dead-pan one pre-tutorial revamp last year was nice.....very nice..... she sounded more like a A.I with the mono computerized-esque voice. I miss that.

I understand what you are saying, I'll see what is possible and try to work on this when going over the "failing" modules used. There is a lot on that "things we might do" list. trust me, it's filling my entire backwall here with ideas and why's and why not.
Aglais wrote:I was speaking of the various system ambient pieces, I've already noticed that the ships all differ by faction (I'm particularly fond of the Caldari one). Or does system ambient music only change with security status?
Right now, it's only the music that fits systems, sec status and so on. There are some changes to famous places and so on, but not caldari or amarr space specific.

Right. Are there any plans on making the music faction specific at any point in the future? This would in my opinion be a great way to help establish the 'feel' of each faction. |

I agree with this, it would be pretty cool to have faction space specific ambient music. Maybe one day even extending this to pirate space. |

Heyy CCP WhiteNoiseTrash! Glad to finally see CCP inject some awesome into eve's sound!
just wondering as a sound guy myself if the audio in eve is mostly samples or mostly synthesis?
and would love to know if you can dispel the popular myth in eve that having sound on adds lag to the game? (personally i believe those people who think so just have terrible computers and cant tell client lag from network lag!)
ohh and the one thing thats always annoyed me to do with sound in eve is when jumping through a titan with 200 other guys... the multiple voice channels for each sound effect per ship build up to insane levels in headphones, to the point i have to pretty much rip my headphones off so i dont go deaf.
thanks for listening to all of us in this thread and keep up the good work bro! |
