So out of boredom I fitted a cheap Kestral and flew out to lowsec to see what I could find. I got there and warped 50km away from a random moon to see if I could figure out how to work my D scan and when I did I found something interesting maybe about 50km away from me. Just from looking it turned out to be a Caldari beacon of some sort.
Anyways I tried to lock onto it and of course I was to far for it to work but then some random cruise missile turrets locked me and started to shoot. I held down my "D" key and kept clicking on the stargate in my overview to get out of there but nothing happened and I blew up shortly after.
After my ship blew up I tried again in just my pod and it still didn't work. I had to click on the stargate in my overview and select the jump option for my pod to go. However when I made the jump and tried it in the next system my hot key seemed to work again.
Anyone know why this is? Is there something I don't know about or was it some kind of lag/ bug/ malfunction? |

The issue with your hotkey not working while you were in your pod is curious, as nothing was preventing you from warping, you say you selected the stargate repeatedly, and it worked one system later.
I will warn you about what blew you up, though: In low- and null-security space, Player Owned (Structure/Starbase) or 'POS' anchored at moons may be set to engage anything that arrives in their little area of space around the moon they are anchored at, so warping to random moons may be quite hazardous. Additionally, these POSes have their own warp disruption batteries in addition to damage-dealing ones, so your inability to warp out while you were being fired on might have been because you were warp scrambled.
POSes also exist in high-security space of 0.7 to 0.5; they cannot be set to engage just anything they see there, however, so if you want to take a look at some in high-security space you should be safe. |

You were destroyed by a player owned starbase (POS). POS are anchored at moons so be aware when you visit a moon that there may be a defended station nearby as you come out of warp. POS defences take a while to lock you so had you immediately warped out you would have been fine.
As for the hotkey bit : Likelyhood is you were warp scrambled as soon as the POS locked you. But as a side note, i always click the gate first then hit D til it warps.
In future dont hang about near moons with huge aggressive death-star like pain machines in orbit around them :D
Well done for learning dscan (remember the dscan direction is controled by the camera not the direction of your ship). new caldari ewar
honestly sounds like just random wacky ui behavior, last night my d key warped me to zero rather than jumping
and im guessing that "beacon" was really a pos, hence the cruise missile coming at you |

I was thinking I had been warp scrammed but nothing came up showing that I was and then my pod wasn't warping either when I tried to use my hot key, but thanks for the information. Ill be sure to be careful about going to moons now. Can planets have the same POS's at them or would those be relatively safer? |

Planets will NOT have POSes at them; for the exact same reason, however, they typically rank higher on the 'list of places to check for people to kill' when someone goes looking for someone else in a system.
If you're intending to do some more low-sec exploration, one of the most important things you can learn to do is make "safe-spots". These are bookmarks you create in a random spot in space; thus, they do not automatically appear on the warp-to list of other players in the system, only you. You CAN still be caught if someone scans you out using combat probes, but you are still vastly safer in a safespot compared to sitting at a planet, moon, or asteroid belt.
To create a safespot, open your 'people and places' window and go to the 'places' tab. Select a random object in the system to warp to - planet, station, stargate, etc - and, at some point through your warp towards that object, hit 'add bookmark' on the people and places window to create your own private safespot. So, for instance, if you warp to a station 20 AU away, some point between 5 and 15 AU to target might be a generally good range to create your bookmark.
Once the bookmark is made, you can warp to it any time you wish. |
