Has anyone ever successful found a accelerator gate with a scan probe? I've been testing it and can't seem to find jack. Not even sure if the option to search for accelerator gates is even present. :(

nope it's not possible you can only search for a station (which does not include starbases) for inanimate objects. From Ashes to Ashes... From Dust to Dust....

You need to drop the probes in a triangular fashion around the object you are scanning for (all less than 3 au away). Simply unloading them all in one spot doesnt work unless the ship you are looking for is very very close (like 50,000 km).

Oh. thanks.
? But if the target is in the middle of nowhere, then getting your bookmarks to the right spots to drop the scan probes has got to be a huge headache if even possible?
Do the Deep Space scan probes work at least?

Unless this last patch changed something, you can just drop 3 in the same spot and that will work fine. No need to waste 6 hours trying to triangulate a 3 au area...
Look here for a FAQ on probes--> Linkage - Clicka Meh!!
And another --> Linkage-Clicka Meh Too!!
And yet another --> Linkage - Clicky
That last link has the "no need to triangulate" post in it. I've tested it. And like I said, unless this has been changed in the recent patch you can just launch 3 in the same area and let them do their thing.
If whatever you are looking for is within the red probe circle on your scanner, they will find it. --------------------------------------------- "Rang Rang" Something no one wants in eve. Pray that it never comes. They are locusts... You've been warned... ------------------------------------ |

Accelerator gates have a beacon next to it usually, try looking for that

Drop three drones in the same spot to find something - confirmed working. Finding rookie ships - didn't work. (weird)

I did a test last night, confirming what I already knew: that dropping 3au probes in one grid does not work unless you are super close to the target. I had an alot of mine make a safespot .4 au from a planet in HLW and dropped 3 3au probes at the planet, and it did not work.
Visual documentation:
1 2 3 4 5 (Sorry for the large pictures; I run a 2 monitor setup and my main is 1600x1200 and I'm not a good editor.)
Now that said, I have had the previous method work if the target is very close, I would estimate of the less than 1 mil KM variety. But certinly not at anything close to 1 au and up.

Dropping 3 in the same grid only works if you're 1 AU (150.000.000km) or less from the target...
If you're more then 1 au but less then 3 au out, you will have to triangulate it... or atleast have 1 probe on the other side of the object your looking for. Most of the time its much easier to just get yourself a BM less then 1 au away... just drop bm's while warping between planets/stargates on either side of the object (pre-probe style) till you are close enough, or let your cap run dry and then warp, so you only warp a very short distance...
the "triangulation lines" the game draws between the probes have a 1-au "thickness"... if that makes any sense, anything caught within it is found
(if you drop 3 probes in the same spot, i think you also have to drop them a little bit apart from eachother, atleast it didnt work for me if i dropped all 3 on top of eachother, but if i drew a small triangle with them, it never failed so far - i might be wrong tho just try for yourself i guess)

Make probes like secure containers - they have to be at least 5000m away from each other in 1 single place, but they WILL find stuff, when dropped like that. It is only realistic, and would make probes a bit more useful and less confusing to use. _______________________________________________
